Just like Alcohol & Guns, in order to activate these vendor locked motherboards + CPUs, sellers will be required to attestate proper identification in order to unlock these killswitched devices.
All they are waiting on is for the masses to accept buying these. Otherwise you will not be able to compute.
Unless we all collectively operate a fabrication facility, you will have no options.

Decrypting? I don't think any of the similar-strength protection measures which have been defeated were done by brute-forcing the decryption key. There would undoubtedly be attacks which exploit other flaws.
That said, I agree that libre hardware would be the better option.

A year or so ago I made the leap to Linux and was absolutely astonished that it required zero skills or effort I didn't already have by being the family IT guy. I picked Linux mint because it was specially said to mimic the windows look and feel without bloat to create the least effort switch and I would say that's exactly my experience with it. It's free, and you can run it off a USB stick to test drive it any time you like. Strong recommend my friend

I'm not against Linux. From time to time i do try out different linux editions. Last one was POP os when W10 support was ending. Got stuck on setting up dual boot and crossing over to w10 ltsc was just easier.
I just have a rather low tolerance for dealing with software side of PC problems. So i do put that away for as long as possible. Until keeping current system running for basic day to day tasks becomes a bigger hassle than crossing over and getting said tasks to run again.

I totally understand that! Dual booting can be a bit of a pain. Windows doesn't always play nice on that front. Luckily I have a windows work laptop and my wife's laptop when I need windows for something specific and it's easier to just use that. I've been meaning to try some other distros and explore that.
For me the big hurdle was gaming, and now with proton it's no longer an issue.

What’s the point of collecting age verification at the operating system level if the installed programs don’t ask for it? Is it likely that ssh, Microsoft excel, emacs, photoshop are going to ask the operating system for the user’s age?

The real point is matching people to hardware to enforce onerous anti piracy measures, anti ad block measure, and anti-"Sorry citizen you are not allowed to discuss taboo subjects like gay people and Socialism" measures. Also long term probably some "why are you usng your technology during the daily prayer hour citizen, please report to the reeducation camps.

If the OS allows you to setup user's age during the out of box experience and then locks it a parent would only need to partake in that step. Other applications and sites that require to check age could then receive a simple Adult=true or Adult=false and make sure to send those with the Adult=false to the 403 forbidden to jerk off page.
Kids would then learn man in the middle attacks to modify the flag before it is sent to the application.
So the point is to improve computer literacy, I think?

2027, the year of the typewriter once again?
If such non-sense was to ever reach the EU (good luck, USA), which is quite likely seeing the non-sense we have already going on, and If I'm ever required to prove my age/ID in order to be allowed to use 'my' computer, said computer will instantly be disconnected from the Internet and turned back into what I always used mine for: a glorified typewriter.
And if for some even more absurd reason that was not doable, I would dust off the Olympia SG1, a typewriter from the 1950s that I inherited from my grandfather in the early 70s... The same typewriter I used up well into the 80s to publish my first texts and fanzines of back then, before I switched to a computer and a printer.
This 70 year-old or so typewriter still works perfectly well today, and the only updates it requires is once in a while a new ink ribbon which one can still purchase. Plus, it looks as cool as it ever looked ;)
And good luck forcing it to check my age or ID before I can type on it.

Hmmm no then it wasn't that one. It's well older... I must have gotten the name wrong which means it would be harder for me to find. I do remember Jon Voight as one of the main villains and was basically a prescient film to PRISM, the DMCA and Edward Snowden.

Depends where you happen to live. Alcohol is sold without question in my country (France) provided you look old enough. If you don't then, indeed, you will need to prove you're of legal age.
Guns are not sold as easily as, say, in the USA. There is a lot of limitations on who can ask to own one (where and when) and also on the type of gun: don't even think of buying some of those (semi-)automatic killing machine gun too many US people seem so obsessed owning... the only way to get your hands on one in France if you're not a military is through illegal means, like being a member of some serious gang)
That being said, I doubt one will as often find guns or alcohol in a yard sale as they can find old typewriters lying around (the model I mentioned is ~72 years old)? At least here in France, maybe it's different in the USA... it's such an odd country ;)

Currently all AI powered age verification is entirely and totally bypassed by one of the following:
Using video game characters
Using your local politician's ID
Using basically a vtuber model
Using an AI generated fake ID
