Early cigarette ads were fond of touting the health benefits of smoking, so this presumably attempts to subvert that by framing it as something to purely enjoy.
It is so JARRING to me how much perception has been distorted over the years. How could I in my youth ever perceive a bundle of burning, poisonous leaves in cheap-ass paper sending out vile smelling smoke that leaves people coughing... as cool and even sexy?
Just... what?! It's good to remember how much our culture and surroundings can shape our perception of reality and apply that knowledge to other things.
Hey now cigarettes can be cool, but the type of people who can pull it off basically consists of deranged Brits like John Constantine or Detective Halligan.
