Lemmy community sidebars need more "related communities" links

Most communities are not the sole community related to their topic, there are really often other communities on the same, or similar topics.

An example: there are a tonne of art related comunities, but only a small handful of them have links to other related communities.

It would be great if there was more of a culture of propping up semi-related communities. This would be particularly useful for helping more niche communities get rolling.

I agree! If you DM the mods or make a meta post, I feel like they'd happily add a section. Sometimes they aren't aware of the other communities

CombatWombat@feddit.online · 21 pts · 32d (13 replies)

If someone messages me with a suggested addition to the sidebar for one of my communities, it makes my day. This is fedi, not reddit -- be friendly with your local mod.

agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 32d

I only really run one, but I'd be ecstatic if someone made a good recommendation for a related community.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -11 pts · 31d (11 replies)

The moderators on lemmy are just as bad as on reddit in some cases. Fuck your local moderator, in some cases.

They are the reason lemmy doesn't take off, it's the same dynamic, every person in authority backs up their compatriots. From government to reddit to lemmy, it's all the same.

I don't want to call the moderators fucking losers, but it's accurate in some cases. And all moderators will back them up. And it is why lemmy is a backwater that enjoys no expansion of the user base.

Without addressing that, this is all pointless. There should be clear rules, enforced equally, with appeals, leading to a jury trial of members for enforcement actions. Without that, we are just a mini reddit.

This is some real "I did my poli-sci bachelors on youtube" big-brain shit

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -7 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Gibberish. I know you would cry victim if I told you you suck, so I won't.

Neat

Your comment history, including some comments in this post, are full of insults, rude remarks, and flaming. I can see exactly why you've had messages removed by moderators.

That's not a Lemmy problem, that's a you problem. It's not hard interacting with other people without sweeping insults.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -6 pts · 31d (4 replies)

You are lying. I am polite to everybody that isn't a piece of fucking shit. Or expousing a wrong opinion.

You are a person that tries to get people cancelled that you can't argue against with reason.

naught101@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 31d (3 replies)

Given just your comments on this thread, I think they're bang on the money. Grow up.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 0 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Says the guy with nothing positive to contribute, that just jumps on downvoted comments. I would say you should in fact stop sucking at social media. Since you brought it up.

Get help, kid

CombatWombat@feddit.online · 1 pts · 31d (1 reply)

I'm not sure what about my comment made you feel that "fuck you" was an appropriate response, but I assure you it was not.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -4 pts · 31d

I don't see any such comment on this thread. But yes.

Auster@thebrainbin.org · 7 pts · 32d

Seconded! Also should help with discoverability overall, still one of the weaker points of the fediverse.

100%

I'd love some suggested communities related to !selfhosted@lemmy.world!

Recommendations are welcomed

rimu@piefed.social · 6 pts · 31d

If Lemmy automatically generated a list of related communities then mods wouldn't need to manually maintain a list.

fizzle@quokk.au · 4 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Nah, this can lead to having many sparsely populated communities. It can discourage new users, and fediverse adoption generally.

For example, if you look in one of the several audiobooks communities you would conclude that the fediverse is a ghost town. However, the actual "community" is in /c/books. If you post about audiobooks in both you won't get any engagement in the audiobooks communities.

After the great reddit API influx a few years ago a bunch of communities sprang up but were quickly abandoned, contributing to this problem.

There's actually a community discussing these dead communities and how to go about merging / closing the dead ones, but I can't remember what its called.

Of course in some cases with larger communities it might make sense to split communities into different topics, but there's very few communities large enough for that to be genuinely warranted.

One thing what i miss from Reddit is that user recommending related subreddits or suggesting subreddits where the post would fit in.

I see this in the fediverse sometimes but it is much rarer.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 3 pts · 31d (3 replies)

sidebars need a lot of love. No one should really be making a community until they are ready to explain what their community is about and not only link to other communities using the proper linking for federation but also wikis and resources and such. I appreciate people running communities but if little effort is going to be put in I rather just not have the community. Now granted some communities do a decent job with the sidebar but its certainly not the norm in the fediverse.

naught101@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d (2 replies)

Idk. You also gotta know that people are going to come and join in before you know it's worth the effort

HubertManne@piefed.social · 1 pts · 30d (1 reply)

why? Theoretically people should have an innate interest enough to make a bit of effort worth it. I think a lot of people want something to be a thing but aren't really into it enough to be making a community about it. Which is fine if they don't make one but if they are going to half ass one into being it would be better for them not to.

naught101@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 30d

Yeah, you're right. Minimal useful explanation is necessary. It can always be expanded later too

StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 31d (1 reply)

I disagree, in my experience this tended to lead to the whole. "This interpretation of our niche is better suited for our sister subreddit so your post has been removed"

naught101@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 31d

If there are clear distinctions between them, this is a good thing IMO. If I sign up for a community, I want to see content that's on topic. If I see too much unrelated stuff, I'll leave. If I want to see both types of topic, I can just join both.

Eldritch@piefed.world · 2 pts · 31d

Way ahead on this heh. Did this a while back on our communities. Piefed batching of cross posts helps a bit with discovery. And this should as well.

lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org · 1 pts · 24d (1 reply)

I would love to see some more artistic and visible appreciation for related communities in the sidebars. Something like the old webring / affiliate banners that websites had in the '90s (88x31 IIRC), even!

naught101@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d

Hell yeah

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -8 pts · 31d (3 replies)

Without addressing the main problem, that moderators that suck have impunity, under the reddit system, where they have influence beyond their groups, lemmy is bound to be simply a group of malcontents banned from reddit.

We need a new system, not reddit fediversed. There is a reason we haven't taken off in popularity, and you douchy moderators are a big part of that.

StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 31d

admins are different than moderators

Sergio@piefed.social · 1 pts · 31d (1 reply)

I hope we never "take off in popularity" JFC wat a nightmare that would be!

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -1 pts · 31d

Yeah, sure, having corporate america control social media is way better, good take!
