"EU demands Facebook and Instagram dismantle" I wish the headline had stopped there :-)

Drugs are already illegal and it doesn't stop people from ruining their lives and those around them. This needs to be treated at the source, like drugs.

Funnily enough, we are also really shit at treating drug related issues!

I don't, but that also means that I'm cut out of certain information and activities.

For example?

The only time I have ever found people posting about events in my town is when looking at someone else browsing Facebook.

In smaller villages there's usually a facebook group or two and few whatsapp groups along with associations instagram accounts which communicate 90+% of all kinds of events around locally. Municipal government obviously have their official websites and stuff, but for community events it's pretty much all Meta.

I've tried to change that, but when arranging an event and advertising it on mastodon doesn't really work if 7 people see your post and 4 of them are across the globe.

Except for lots use cases it is. They are the only places where some events are broadcast, or reach out some businesses, or access lots of local groups.

Maybe the fault of why these people go to social media in the first place, but not the fault why these people spend hours everyday using their apps. Putting in addictive algorithms is a serious crime imo.

I mean it is the title. They are addictive. :)
