Did you know that PAC-MAN was originally PUCK-MAN? It was changed when it came to NA due to worries that the "P" would be too easy to vandalize on arcade cabinets.

IllNess@infosec.pub · 5 pts · 25d (3 replies)

Cool. Was this in Japan?

woelkchen@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 25d (2 replies)

No. A computer museum. No idea where the arcade machine was originally from.

IllNess@infosec.pub · 4 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Cool. Thank you.

I'm surprised Namco didn't just call him Fuck Man from the beginning. It would be a typical Japanese thing to do.

a1studmuffin@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 25d

If it was a Hideo Kojima game it would have been Fuck-hard Man

With a black sharpie you could make it "Fuck Man" and turn the nose into a dick and balls.

Zarxrax@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 25d

The artist knew what he was doing with that nose.

justaman123@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 25d

Honestly missed opportunity, we could had edgy fuck man

IllNess@infosec.pub · 7 pts · 25d (3 replies)

So I'm guessing the name stuck for the Japanese market.

パックマン

The first character is pronounced "pa".

This isn't the case with Mega Man being Rockman or Astro Boy being the Mighty Atom.

The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 25d (2 replies)

The Japanese pronunciation is why they wanted to call him Puck-Man! It's apparently from a Japanese onomatopoeia for a mouth opening and closing, "Paku Paku"

IllNess@infosec.pub · 8 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Oh cool. actually very cool. I didn't know that.

Thank you for the info.

The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 25d

Np, just learned it myself right before posting this.

yermaw@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 25d

And they were right about the easy target of vandalism. I already thought thats what it said at first glance.

mrfriki@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 25d

Fuck, man... Didn't knew.

froh42@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 25d (2 replies)

This is the lesson the German car sharing brand MILES has learned too late.

A lot of the stickers on the MILES cars read MILFS nowadays.

alleycat@feddit.org · 4 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Wait, it's actually called MILES?

FoxAlive@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 25d

What would the vandals do to Ms. Fuck man

realitista@lemmus.org · 3 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Smart move. I wanted to do it immediaty upon seeing that logo. It was literally my first knee jerk reaction.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 2 pts · 25d

That phallic nose isn’t helping the matter.

Etterra@discuss.online · 2 pts · 25d

In what accent does Fac Man make sense then?
