Odd, I didn't read that slanted line as smoke at all, but that the artist was being dragged off by... someone ... mid-stroke, as it were.

ohh i read the transcript and finally understood it. at first i could not see it as anything other than a branch with a cob of corn hanging on it. was wondering what the corn had to do with the artist's disappearance.
