I'm not surprised but I also think most people with these ideas don't actually believe them. They've been fed a line of bullshit about people with differences being their enemies. It should be our job to push back on it.
We should NOT pander to regressive bigoted bullshit for a crumb of power. It doesn't even work! These weak democrats sell out their people and lose the election anyway because they're spineless wimps. They don't stand for shit and that's why they lose. Shame on them.

I 100% agree. Dems don’t have to do this. Kamala literally gained more white support than Biden, Hillary and Obama 2012. Suburban White voters aren’t fleeing over trans stuff the way the media is trying to portray it.
But they’re winning the messaging battle.

tigermountain@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 35d
Self identity doesn't require external validation. You define yourself through your actions, not by what you say you are. It's not a sign of disrespect if someone doesn't use your preferred pronouns, it's that they just don't care. They're more concerned with you being a good neighbor or that you use your turn signals or say please and thank you or make eye contact when you're talking to someone or that you bathe before you go out in public. Pronouns are superficial. Try actually contributing something positive to the world instead of acting like a victim.
uselessartifact@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 34d
I'd argue you define yourself through both.
If you purposefully don't use their preferred pronouns it is. In much the same way it's a sign of disrespect to call someone a piece of trash to their face.
You're being the bad "neighbor" by purposefully using the wrong pronouns, but also, what?
tigermountain@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 34d
People who purposely use your wrong pronouns are just assholes. I'm not talking about them. Just regular people. And your pronouns, or your name, or what skin color you have are just labels. Not who you are.

Floridians refer to Ohio as North Alabama.
volore@scribe.disroot.org · 2 pts · 34d
well I suppose that one moniker, that with which we refer to the parts

Unless you count Deliverance or Children of the Corn as a hidden gem, which, I mean fair to you, great films, not how I'd want to spend a weekend.
And now, just to really fuck with you: Ohio has breached containment. Ohio is in the Vice Presidency, and will be at the wheel if Trump dies. You may have realized this already, but if you haven't, if that doesn't make you shiver a bit, I don't know what will. And there are direct sources for this complaint, showing that the compliance team will try to enforce compliance.
Snapz@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 35d
There are two things discussed here, the candidate's statement (indefensible, as expressed) and OPs headline saying that people are being "BANNED!" by Ohio dem party. To the second, the screenshot you post isn't communicating that, it's communicating that another elected official was asked by their party to discuss the matter strategically in public while work is done internally to address this and form a united response - those things being take stakes for elected politics - and they weren't happy with the pace of any supposed internal resolution and unified public response, which is understandable. But all of that has nothing to do with OPs choice to push Abby in the morning's inflammatory headline of " BANNED!!!" which is only intended to leave left minded peoples split against themselves.
Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 35d

GarboDog@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 34d
Honestly they don’t even care.. theyre looking for power and trans people are an easy target due to people’s look against us and how small a minority cant fight back alone. Just as easily, once they claim that they can in fact hold power against one group of people- they’ll go to the next, then the next, then the whole shebang.. That’s why trans history is so short, people love to delete history to make themselves look better and trans history and trans rights are always the easiest one to erase due to us being the smallest of minorities, but the most abnormal to conservatives. Once they finish demolishing trans rights/hostory/activity, they’ll go for the gays, the bi, the lgbt as whole, they’ll go for smaller non christian religions, disabled people, immigrants, people of color, they’ll go for women, the poor, until only those in their ideal like mindedness are in power.
Then again they do love attacking all of us illegally, putting a little bow on it calling it democracy or justice or whatever. Idk if that makes us sound like a doomer but that’s just got they operate. We can fight them in legal court all day, but honestly we wonder how long it’ll take till the people snap.

But hey, so long as you direct all that vitriol to the one side that can learn and grow and not to the worst possible person that's just dandy eh?
All you people sit here with your moral superiority. I've watched this state go from slightly OK to downright dogshit and it's hurt not only LGBT but basically everyone save the obscenely wealthy. You think shining a light on this while ignoring the fascists in the room is helping anyone but it's not.
Again- she can get better. She can do better. Everyone WILL be worse off if vivek wins.
SippyCup@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 35d
I'm only wrong if you don't care about the Overton window's gradual shift to the right. Because if you're constantly settling, that's what you're going to get. You either push back or you let it happen. Letting it happen hasn't worked so far but I'm sure this time it will be different.
timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 35d
Yes sure, the overton window where gay marriage is illegal, or LGBT in general is not widely accepted (much more so than in the past), or climate change is not being taken seriously.
Do you listen to yourself? Do you think society is regressing because of people like Acton here? No, it's because good people are doing NOTHING because their moral superiority means more to them than stopping fascists in their tracks.
But hey, letting things burn to the ground hasn't worked at all yet but hey, maybe this time it will be different.
More and more convinced you people just want to be leaders of the ashes when it all does because what you're preaching makes zero sense, at all. I'd rather try to get things going in the right direction than risk everything on a hope that people will "wake up" like you all seem to think is inevitable. And hey, guess what- if they're not awake by now I don't have a whole lot of faith in a 180 shift from them.
But maybe you're right- perhaps we should let the Republicans who have controlled almost every single lever of power for the past 3 decades in Ohio have yet another go of it. Surely there will be zero difference. Surely they won't pass MORE laws against LGBT to the point where maybe shooting them in the streets is legal. I mean, it's worth the risk right? Wouldn't want to take a chance on an imperfect Democratic politician right? Surely the proper answer is to criticize an imperfect Democrat and let the Republicans continue to torch the state and make everyone's lives worse.
SippyCup@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 35d
Ok so this imperfect Democrat is only intolerant of lgbtq+ folk.
Surely the next one will move twice back the other direction. Instead of another step closer to Republican policy. That hasn't ever happened but next time it will.
Do you listen to yourself when you speak or are you just blindly following along hoping for the best and screeching at anyone who doesn't step in line with you?
You're aware that the line is leading to Republican policy?
timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 34d
If you had more than two brain cells you could clearly look up her policies and see they're nothing at all like Republican ones but hey, go ahead champ, tell me how I'm wrong. Tell me also how I'm wrong as I've watched people sit out because "they weren't enthused" or "didn't bother to vote" for the imperfect candidate and it led us here- 3 decades of near unanimous Republican power IN OHIO (you know, this place where she is running) and how it's gone to shit.
But in your head you think that reversing DECADES of Republican rule will be just oh so easy right? Let's just sit yet another election out. Surely then everyone will come to their senses and reverse all these terrible laws (you know, the ones you're complaining about.)
I'm done. No use arguing with a brick wall. Have a good day.

From your comment history, it looks like you're an American leftist. Maybe don't throw rocks at allies? You're going to need all the help you can get with your current government structure.
TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 35d
I am economically left, yes. I'm also a leftist who thinks you have to meet the working class where they are, and it seems to me most working class people in America are not necessarily socially progressive, especially on trans issues. That doesn't necessarily mean most working class people are hostile to trans people, but some, many even, have strong feelings about gender identity, especially when it comes to children. I think it is a huge mistake to alienate a large percentage of the working class for the sake of a relatively small number of people and a niche issue. Again, I don't think most working class Americans are necessarily anti-trans. I think most working class Americans are perfectly willing to adopt a live and let live attitude toward trans people. But I think it's potentially a wedge issue, and I think the conservatives know that and that's why they won't shut up about it. The best thing the left can do is not take the bait and be diligent in steering the conversation back to the day to day economic issues that actually affect the majority of working class people.
Edit: I keep seeing the slippery slope logical fallacy in the responses to my comment. It's ridiculous to suggest that what I'm talking about will inevitably lead to trans people being rounded up and put into extermination camps. That's very extreme. As I've already said, I think most working class people are more than willing to let trans people be. Many of you are mistaking indifference for hatred. Violent hatred, even. I'm not denying the existence of people who do have a violent hatred of trans people, but those people are a very small minority and in no way indicative of the working class generally.
Barbarian@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 35d
Just out of interest, what do you make of this situation in my country? Roma people make up less than 5% of the population of the country. They are heavily discriminated against. The majority of the population are racist against them. By your logic, we should ignore and maybe even embrace the racism to steer the conversation back to economic issues?
JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 35d
Brother it is 100% a wedge issue. Just like abortion. It's easy to get people riled up over anything related to sex and sexuality.
Nobody is going around thinking about other people abortions, or whether or not the garage matches the trim.
The thing is, social issues, when it comes to sex and sexuality, there's a whole distribution network for getting people riled up, and it's been around for centuries. The church.
You know the easiest way to strip someone of their humanity is to take away their agency over their sexual partners?
Doesn't matter if you're literally raping someone, forcibly breeding your slaves, or telling someone they aren't allowed to love someone else (whether because of race or passport or genitals). The net effect is the same - a piece of their humanity and agency is taken from them.
Anyway that deep-rooted Catholic shame is good for something...getting people uneasy talking about sex and sexuality (and the consequences therein). And when something outside the heteronormative comes up and makes them think about it, it makes them angry.
I appreciate your comment and perspective, and I do really think it's something that's missed by a lot of the compassionate social progressives. Acceptance is a good thing...but it can't be forced on everyone. Everyone has to get there on their own, and until they do, all this transgender talk makes them uneasy.
Objection@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 35d
Sure, it shouldn't be the focus of a campaign, but this strategy of caving to the right's BS rhetoric simply does not work.
First off, it legitimizes their positions, when even democrats start spouting transphobic nonsense, it makes it seem like there's legitimate concerns and a debate to be had, when in reality it's just these far-right weirdos and conspiracy theorists talking nonsense.
Second, you're concerned about alienating people for the sake of a small segment of the population, but by caving to the right's rhetoric, you are not only alienating trans people but also allies, which is discussed in the article. How does that number actually compare to the number of people for whom trans acceptance is a deal breaker, but who aren't just going to vote republican regardless?
Third, this does not stop at trans people, and certainly not at trans kids. Once they have demonstrated that they can demonize (and eventually exterminate) trans people, next they will come for other gay people. Trans bathroom bans have often led to cis lesbians being harassed because they don't "look feminine enough." The government is now talking about screening testosterone levels in cis men in the military.
Where will be in 20 years? Will cis men with long hair be forced to cut it off? Will women only be permitted to wear skirts?
These freaks are living in the 1800s, their values and agendas are absolutely not in line with the average person. But, they are able to advance their agenda by selling it one small step at a time, and they're able to keep taking steps because the democrats keep caving and accommodating them, allowing them to redraw the line.
Where exactly is your line? Is there one? Or will you hold on to this logic of "it's not worth standing up for such a small minority" all the way to the gas chambers?
Snowies@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 35d
“Especially when it comes to children”
They always weaponize children.
There is no conspiracy to trans your kids.
There is no widespread boom of doctors gleefully diagnosing patients as trans and prescribing lifechanging medicine and surgery on a whim.
That stuff is all bullshit to get you to alienate yourself from people who agree with you on basically everything else.
The process is long and arduous especially for parents trying to help their kids.
You’re worried about kids permanently damaging their bodies and living messed up lives?
Good. Don’t force them to go through the wrong puberty by denying them the medicine their doctors prescribe.
Mind. Your. Business.
Let doctors do their jobs. Let families decide this stuff without you. They don’t know you and you don’t know them. Not everyone is the same, and there are professionals that deal with this stuff for a reason.
Don’t vote against trans rights.
They’re just human rights.
Trans people are not the boogeyman.
