But the popup was only half the problem . This doesn't change the fact that they did install way more than the driver on that PC. And in fact, no normal display needs a driver at all.
Disabling the popup is fixing the symptom, not the problem. Not a bad PR move, but not real change either.

How tf does something connected by a display cable install anything anyway?

the hardware manufacturer submits the 'bloatware' as drivers or other 'essential' software to microsoft to be included in the library of third-party shit microsoft delivers via windows update, which can then be segregated into automatically or optionally installed.
hardware manufacturers are abusing this process to install bits (such as ads) that are not actually required for basic functionality of their hardware.

DP has features like Display Stream Compression and Forward Error Correction that needs a driver to encode/decode.

It’s ok, no more windows and no more LG for me
cRazi_man@europe.pub · 25 pts · 28d
Exactly. LG now added to the "nope list".

Yep. It’s a shame, I’ve been very satisfied by their products but they’re just determined to be a shitty company.

Same here, I love my LG TV and recommend a lot of people to buy LG. But now? I recommend people to stay away and never connect the TV to the internet.

I try to seperate my recommendations by category, rather than an overall approval of a brand. Even then, I would probably add caveats on top.
e.g. LG OLED TV, sure - but never connect it to the internet directly. Use a set-top box like an Apple TV instead.
Or: LG monitor? Only if you have to, and never on a Windows machine.
Or: LG refrigerator? Never. Their linear compressor design is faulty, and is practically guaranteed to fail and be ‘uneconomical’ to repair.

I had a very good experience with the LG refrigerator at my mom’s house, so when I bought my home I went to the store for the exact model.
It was discontinued and created a new one that is the same but cheapened some things, now it is shittier.

Probably in a similar boat; both my parents, and cousin had early 2010s LG French Door fridges (as they were just becoming popular).
When it came time for us to buy a new fridge, we followed along and purchased a 2018 model. While both of theirs are still functioning fine to this day - ours had the (now all too common) linear compressor fault in 2023.
We were fully reimbursed our original purchase price (yay, strong Aussie consumer protections!) and have since bought a Hitachi (Made in Japan) fridge. We’re quite happy with it, though it did cost extra out of pocket - and it’s way too early to be able to qualify for a recommendation.

They played their hand and we know what kind of companies they are. Bye.

The problem is the forced install of LGs bloatware that can install anything with full permissions, this solves nothing. Until the issue of hardware being allowed to install whatever trash bloatware they want the problem has not even been addressed.

This should not be the fix, but noting here for posterity that this can be disabled in the Group policy Editor:

Somehow people think linux is hard
Meron35@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 27d
"Linux is too hard, there's too many config files" all while Microsoft requires people to learn what databases and Group policy are.
VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 28d
Isn't the group policy editor disabled for most non-Enterprise editions of Windows these days?

You know what else they need to crack down on? Right, themselves.

Ok MS, now do W11 itself.
That start menu is still one of the biggest fuck you's out there. Not to mention what is going on under the hood. Despicable.

Great, now get rid of the universal ID and stop spying on us

Are we still on pre-Y2K where every device/peripherals needs drivers to be used. F modern technology.
Beangut@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 27d
Utterly deranged statement.
What do you propose instead?

Touching some grass and see the sun.
