Oh but I've been locked in. It's just not the thing you or me wanted me to lock in on.

"Just lock in" is easily the worst advice I've ever received.

Them: "Just lock in, bro."

Me: "I could do that pretty essily if the thing I am trying to lock in with wasn't mind numbingly dull. I am getting exactly ZERO dopanine from this shit."

I've mastered contorting myself into a cephalopod-like entity to squeeze through the open windows and cracks in the walls just to get inside. It's really tiring though, so I can only do it for so long.

That sounds more like my anxiety than ADHD.

"I can't fix the things that are wrong because of the things that are wrong."

You think being unable to focus doesn’t sound like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 19d (2 replies)

No. "I am locked out with the keys inside" suggests a problem that cannot be solved in the usual way because the usual solution is impossible due to the problem. So to me, it's more about a fear inspired by inevitability than an inability to focus when it comes to getting inside. I'm focused on getting inside. But I can't, my keys are in there. So what do I do?

I’m sorry but you misinterpreted the meme. It’s about ADHD, not anxiety. It says it right there in the meme.

SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 18d

Saying things doesn't make them true. Wouldn't ADHD be more like "just lock in." "bro, I have a million keys and a million locks, how do I find the right ones?"

Anyway, I was sharing my own experience, which is why I used "sounds more like my" instead of "this meme is wrong."

Has there ever been any research as to whether animals have mental traits similar to humans with ADHD?

It seems super weird to me that a successful species of hunters was able to pivot to repetitive and boring farm work. Repetitive stress should make a mentally healthy animal freak out! Sitting for years will kill you! Locking in to something that doesn't deserve your attention seems like it should've been a less fit adaptation.
