I think, ultimately, it depends on how often the thing gets used.
If it goes long enough between licks, the salt will dehydrate and kill any microbes on the surface. But that takes time. If two people lick it in very quick succession, germs could be passed from one to the other.
I licked a pole on a subway car in NYC and it gave me superpowers. Unfortunately they only lasted for 2 hours. Almost died falling out of the sky. Thankfully I was over Iowa and managed to land in a pile of hay.
Apparently this has already been kind of tested (underground too!)
I took a tour of the Wieliczka salt mine when I was in Poland 10 or 15 years ago. As we started to enter the actual mine, the tour guide said something like :
The roof is salt, the floor is salt, the walls are salt, everything is salt. Lick the wall if you want, it's salt."
pauses for a few seconds while somebody licks the wall
Now I should inform you that I tell that to every single group I take through here and every single time at least one person licks the walls.
You appear to be pretending to be a large language model—that's a funny joke! But remember: shared salt licks are almost as dangerous as relying on large language models. It's not just a personal health issue—it's a public crisis.

I think I'd be more worried about what the meth addled fent zombies leave behind on it... Salt's not going to kill that.

What? You don't wanna get high for free?
Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 36d
Not really, no. You've gotta earn a high to really enjoy it... XD

And licking the subway salt isn't earning it enough for you? Do you need a boss battle first? The subway can also provide that.

The true question is, however...
Did you find the needle?
Widdershins@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 36d
New York city has needles all over laying on the ground

I appreciate the pushback on this, as a "salt lick" on the subway is unhygienic and spreads germs easily.

That's quitter talk.
5wim@infosec.pub · 5 pts · 36d
You're right to call that out—I could have kept going, but I quit.

That salt lick is packed with a healthy regime of nutrients and bioflora vital to human health -- sit with that awhile.
📢Is there anything else you wanted to know about the health benefits of shared public salt licks?

Is it sad I can't tell if your copy pasting from an LLM or just speaking like them?

Ya

I wonder If the subway climate would add flavor. Or the person who was licking it before....
