Only if people don't vote in primaries...
That's the part I never understand, all these fucking accounts saying it's not worth fighting before the general, complete fucking silent during the last primary, and won't dona damn thing before the next one in two years
If shits half as bad as you all say it is:
Go fucking volunteer with your state party and make it better.
Sitting online telling anyone with a D by their name is the same is the shit Republicans and Russians pay people money to do; don't do it for free.

I’ve been voting in primaries since the year 2000. When will it start to work?

When there's enough people doing similar.
It's almost as if you don't count at all unless you vote. Amazing really.
If there are that many unhappy people then a difference actually could be made. Assuming they do anything.

It's starting to work now. DSA is winning primaries all over the place.
It took the French hundreds of years and multiple revolutions to overcome their nobility. 25 years is not that long in the wide view of things. Especially when you want to achieve change peacefully, which we should.

raze2012@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 15d
This isn't nationals. There's too many races here (every House seat and 33 Senate seats) for them to fight every progressive candidate. That's why you occasionally see them give up and endorse a few progressives here and there.
Also, most of their work is done in the primaries. They tend to just accept the D candidate once that is done and over with. That's what happened with Mamdmi. Mostly because that's honestly more important than the real election, and also because they kind of have to to keep the ruse up.

You know he ran against Bush the I and Bob Dole, right. And she ran against the demented rapist crook.
Seems pretty straightforward really. Unless you meant the Australian Liberals, then, probably, yeah.
Yeah yeah, primaries, Bernie, DNC, i got ya. But look - on voting day a competent liberal is better than an incompetent rapist sycophant, n’est-ce pas?

Then worked hand-in-glove with Phil Graham and Larry Pressler to dismantle the US regulatory state, sure.
How the Hillary Clinton campaign deliberately “elevated” Donald Trump with its “pied piper” strategy
First show me some of the former. A congo line of Andrew Cuomos and Gavin Newsoms and Gretchen Whitmires and Bob Menendezes and Michael Flynns have not been kind to the liberal party over the last generation.
How many Democrats spent a decade sucking up to Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for a bucket of money, back in the Obama Era? How many worked hand-in-glove with Amazon and Boeing and Palantir, in the name of economic growth? How many sat on the board of Walmart and Goldman Sachs and Ford Motor Company, while pretending a liberal populism?
At some point, you have to take the blinders off.

Both Clintons were extremely competent and did good things.
Yeah Clinton was freaked out by Fox News’ takeover of the Chud-Americans and Congresses full of Klansmen and yes he got seekrit blowjobs and liiiiiiiieeeed about it which affected his plans but championships are a crapshoot, you get what you get.
Do we need to scrape up some “what good did clinton do” to make that case? I’m sure people who weren’t alive or whelped then may need some additional context in the lefty hole here.

Bad for these hyerpartisans times, yes. But this wasn't the norm, even as far back as 15 years ago.
But it's part of why GOP congress is still spineless. A lot of their constituents still think Trump is doing a "good job". Or at least that's what they say out loud.
kreskin@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 16d
Polling show that Dems are unenthusiastic about voting in general lately.
I guess the question becomes who is angrier at their default party and will now refuse to vote with them: previously-republicans or previously-democrats? The largest registration anymore is "independent", by a lot.
raze2012@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 15d
That means the propaganda is working.
kreskin@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 15d
If I understand your comment, you are framing this as republicans looking to split the dems using propoganda. I think its much more complicated than that. It's a fact that traditional Dem voters are far past focussing solely on republicans as the root of all of our problems. Dems and republicans have 26-27% of the voter registrations each and independents are 45%. You can only eff Dem voters in the rear and ignore their problems so many times (while committing a massively unpopular genocide for donations) before Dem voters stop considering their party as representing them-- and they'll sit on the couch when they do.
Its convenient for people to pretend its a dem vs republican fight, but its really dem vs republicans vs couch. Couch is doing really well lately. People are sick of Trump's idiocy and also sick of the DNC's incompetence, self interest, and outright treachery. There is no democracy here until we make it happen.
raze2012@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 14d
Yes, and it's working. Splitting the vote with couch isn't as effective as winning over a vote, but still effective for an unpopular party. And when we're in a low trust society, doing nothing feels more appealing than picking a poison.
The issue is two fold here: 1) you're mad at 2 poisons to pick at election day but 2) do not want to put the work in primaries or before primaries to make a better pick. Someone like Mamdami doesn't just appear from the ether. And it feels defeatist an outright lazy that your preferre candidate didn't make it if you did nothing to support it.
Your lowest effort civic duty is to vote on November, and if you can't even do that I don't know why you're in this country. We tore it apart centuries ago over lack of representation and we want to throw that away? For what? Faux doomerism disguised as perfomative protest? What's really your goal here?
Yes. We can realize that we are in quicksand and focus on getting outselves out while also realizing we later need to stop dinner from burning. But one is clearly more immediate than the other. Dinner will be the least of our worries if we sink here in 2026.

It does come down to November and if we have elections that are fair it should be a sweep. We're seeing already in smaller red districts huge flips, so if its anything but a totally blow out something was going on. How did NYC get Mamdani? Was it burning our vote or discouraging people from voting because the establishment Dems and billionaires wanted freaking Cuomo, and woe is us because the fix is in? No, it was taking a stand and believing that you can make it happen.
We'll have different debates in the general since I'm sure progressives won't win every primary. But right now is the time to send Santa your wish list and stop dooming.

No they’re not russian bots whatever would give you that idea.
NekoKoneko@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 15d
Yeah, I really don't understand.
I'm pretty left from an ideological perspective - universal free healthcare, state-owned or funded basic necessities, food and safety nets, guaranteed worker protections, eliminate billionaires and restore sane worker wages through sane tax and maximum employee/ceo pay multipliers, public-funded childcare services, free or nearly-entirely state-funded tuition through at least college. That cost is a drop in the bucket compared to what we spend on war and pork barrel. And the way you get there is by taking steps toward it to eventually get there.
If one's position is all-or-nothing or that democrats are ineffectual so they're equally bad and therefore we must oppose both, that's basically saying to move from point A to point B, we must teleport rather than walk or drive or take the train. That ensures we never get there... because that metaphorical teleportation is fiction, and no, setting the world on fire doesn't magically create incentives or conditions that in any way help discover teleportation.
CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 15d
Yep, very well said.
I think we can all remember being in our late teens/early 20s and expecting everything to change now, because something something "my generation" and because now I can vote, and politicians better pay attention to the young people, etc., but then most of us tend to grow out of this position.
Unfortunately there is a certain type that definitely does zero self-reflection, has no pragmatism or awareness of how the real world works, etc. and stubbornly sticks to this myopic (and frankly, rather selfish) viewpoint, and even worse, try to encourage others to either be apathetic or throw away their votes.

Not voting. Letting this dumpster fire the maga set just go on instead. Maybe 50+ years of horrible living will fix it in the long run. If it was fixed tomorrow then they will keep doing this stunt every 4 years with the excuse that no civil war or nazi camps happened. I want it to happen to prove a point now. Fuck my country so hard.

I hope this is just temporary nihilism. If you’re serious, this might be the most pathetic thing I’ve read in weeks.
