Defund the police IS a crazy slogan, and I say this as someone who wants to defund the police. Public perception actually does matter and if your slogan is something the vast majority of people won’t understand and will likely find outright scary you’re going to struggle very very hard to accomplish the task the slogan is attached too. Marketing matters and “defund the police” is such a bad slogan it feels like sabotage honestly
Yeah it’s crazy that it’s not Abolish the police completely. Fucking cowards why are you sucking up to these dems?? It’s like Hasan goin on his stream and glazing these lukewarm libs. I’m sick of it. Vote blue tho! Think of the opitcsssssss omggggg
So keeping the same police that murder and arrest black people and fucking children way more often than any other race should just be reformed a little? The same exact officers fighting tooth and nail not only to protect this violent apparatus but to expand upon it? And I’m afraid of change? My friend, that is not change. And I do not want to be angry, I am. I am mad at the racist institutions and the complacency in it.
What slogan would you like instead? I think "Defund the police" is probably the most succinct and truthful slogan you could come up with. No matter what political goal you have, summing it up in 3 or so words is never going to give the full picture.
Yes, I agree that communicating clearly is important. But there's only so much you can do realistically.
Cowardice. They will not restructure unless forced. Reform is simply not enough, they are killing us. “Force the police to restructure” is too long. Abolish Police. Defund will suffice for now
People like you are all the right has to point to to sway moderate people who would otherwise be open to solving the problem to continue to ignore it. Messaging matters.
I’m not trying to sway moderates at least not online. That’s just silly and you know it. If you mean talking to people in your day to day life and organizing I’d argue the people I talk to about politics are very much police abolition over restructuring. You wouldn’t restructure ICE, SS. You restructure the housing market , Amazon and farms to feed people. You abolish ice, SS, military.
The crazy part is that it's utterly misunderstood as "abolish the police". You see officers in military gear parading next to crumbling libraries and don't think the funds should go somewhere else?
Lack of literacy is a problem. Defunding a militarized police force isn't. But I guess the general public needs more handholding.
I get ya, but that’s an unpopular opinion to have in these spaces. The trouble is that “strip funding from police and redeploy it in ways that address economic uncertainty and other root causes of societal inequity” doesn’t roll off the tongue as well - so “defund the police” it is!
Of course American organizers have to use the book definitions of those terms. You know, instead of examining the material reality of the people they want to organize and tayloring to their current understanding in order to raise their class consciousness. As we know, class consciousness is raised by throwing Das Kapital at people. 😆
First of all you confused democratic socialism with social democracy. Socialism is fundamentally incompatible with capitalism. What you describe is social democracy.
More importantly, "properly regulated capitalism" has always led to regular capitalism. "properly regulated capitalism" still results in exploitation, if not domestically then abroad. "properly regulated capitalism" still results in commodification of common goods, depletion of resources, a class society, and environmental damage.
Socialism in China lifted 800,000,000 people out of poverty in 40 years and now they're replacing America as the global hegemon. Socialism allowed the USSR to beat the Americans to space, despite the fact that 30 years prior everyone was peasents, and they just got fucked by the 2nd world war.
Welfare is not socialism. Socialism is a broader system with a worker state and public ownership of the commanding heights of the economy. Regulations without a worker state and without public ownership of the commanding heights is always twisted in a manner that either protects capital or entrenches it. The European social democracies all rely on imperialism for their safety nets because they do not have socialism.
That's not what democratic socialism is. That's social democracy -- Capitalism with some kind of social net. It fails for the same reasons capitalism eventually fails; usually after failing as a social democracy first, because capitalist elites will cause corruption & dismantling of the safety net (as is going on everywhere in Europe)
Edit: It's turning my double dashes to emdashes, I didnt chatgpt this :(

Reform the police could accomplish the same goal, but is a more paletable message for the who barely care or don't care.
deathmetaldawgy@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 27d
Where has a palatable message gotten police reform now?
Zannsolo@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 27d
Well the last time it had a chance of major reform the message was defund the police and it blew up in our face.

Properly regulated capitalism is a solid economic system.

It is literally the end goal of all marxist organizing, it's actually Nordic "socialism" that is not socialism.
