It also helps that I had an appointment to discuss starting HRT earlier this week. I was trying to contrast the other comment but now that I'm reading it again I missed the "not" in "I might not be cis after all."
the panel placement makes it look like chuck & herb are looking at the third panel. it's an elegant construction, something that can only be achieved in comics. if a film had that same exchange, it would just be the two caterpillars looking to the right, then the image would be fully replaced by the image of the butterfly. but through the form of the comic you get a static image of looking, and then you see what's being looked at, regardless of actual deistance between observer and observed. and you keep your tight pacing. Perry Bible Fellowship is great
The dude knows how to tell a story. His whole catalog of comics shows that he's a really skilled artist and storyteller, and literally every tiny detail seems to be consciously and meticulously designed.
yeah it could have been one panel. but it being two panels both shows us that there is distance between the caterpillars and the butterflies, and also keeps the pacing, helps with comic timing, and aids legibility of reading order. i think it's a really elegant composition
Pretty much yes, there's a bunch of different methods but mainly you're going to be introducing a "master" first which is a wider shot showing the whole scene, and then you're also using the "singles" to try to show two things at once, a frequent method for this is to shoot "dirty", having things in the foreground like the shoulder of the other actor.

Though they could also have noticed that they want to be a male butterfly ASAP.

the painterly style and visual detail is clear, but the composition took me a bit longer to appreciate. subtle stuff

If a film had that same exchange. It would show both the butterfly and the caterpillars in the same scene??
