Napoleon Dynamite is one of my favorites. Wristcutters: A Love Story is also fantastically weird. The opening scene is very... strong. But the rest of the movie has a lighter tone.

I am not sure what you mean by low stakes but are some slice of life movies that may fit your list:

  • The Straight Story
  • Stand By Me
  • A River Runs Through It
  • The Way Way Back
  • The Breakfast Club
  • Return of the Secaucus 7
  • The Big Chill
  • The Four Seasons
  • Indian Summer

Good Morning

It's a cute, slice-of-life movie about a neighborhood in postwar Japan.

Dazed and Confused. It takes place in a 70's Texas town during the last day of school for a bunch of high schoolers ending in a party in the woods. It plays out the way you'd expect from a bunch of kids looking to have a good time.

Tetsuo, the iron man.

I think.

I have no clue what it was about.

But I've watched it a hundred times.
