NB: I was on the wiki page for Lead to read about all the fun things it does to your body and end up on this page. I don't know if I would have noticed anything off about this article without this note at the top, but something sure seems off about it. Either that, or scientists really did come up with this theory in 2025.
If this violates rule #6 too hard I'll remove this post.

I definitely heard about this kind of thing earlier than 2025. It's pretty well-known that the Romans were fond of lead items, including lead-sweetened wine. Seems unlikely that it significantly impacted the decline of the empire, but it probably didn't help, either.

What tripped me up was that out of 17 sources, 11 are dated 2025. Granted, I don't usually look closely at the sources section, but this spread feels unusual. Also the user seems to be using LLMs not just for this one page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Daniel_Mizen

Fuck. Ever read Anathem by Neal Stephenson? They can't use the internet anymore because it's so rife with misinformation created by AI (they used a different term in the book iirc) that it is inherently useless.

I'm not a huge reader so no, I haven't, but it sure does sound interesting. As long as we have shitposts tho I think the internet is not yet prone to becoming entirely useless, at least for now.

Yeah, not yet; hopefly not ever. In the book the tech was eventually used by governments to rewrite everything on the web to be in line with their propaganda so anything posted would be rowlitten multiple times by bots.

Ok but if this thing happened right now that would be pretty good for us actually. If LLMs rewrite everything, this only leaves LLM output as training data for the next LLMs, leading to relatively fast model collapse, and basically popping the AI bubble with TNT.

Lead poisoning probably didn't impact empire in any significant way, also romans were aware that lead is poisonous. Insane instability of later empire might have much bigger impact on fall of western empire.

That wasn't the camera guy. It was Tom from "Explosion&Fire" / "Extraction&Ire" who is a pretty cool chemostry youtuber from australia. I think it was a bit or he had something different to do, because he does some pretty sketchy stuff on his own channel sometimes
