This is your reminder that that pic of Stalin was HEAVILY edited by the KGB to make him look more handsome.

antonim@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 23d (3 replies)

Yeah, I'd like a source too. The pic has been floating around a lot, first time I hear it's edited.

This version is on Wikipedia, no mention of it being modified (it looks different from the one in OP but as far as I see just due to sharpness and contrast):

Since it took me a while to understand :

The top pictures are Stalin and Hasan Piker. The bottom pics are Trotskij and Sam Hyde.

Sam Hyde is associated with alt-right edgy internet subcultures, while Hasan Piker is a prominent left-wing political commentators on Twitch.

After winning a creator boxing match in 2022, Hyde issued an aggressive, surreal callout to Piker. He generally dismissed or ignored the challenge.

You actually understood it better than I did, and I posted it, lol

He had smallpox at age 6 and was heavily scarred on his face and neck. Looking for pre-edit photos if I can find them.

merde@sh.itjust.works · 17 pts · 23d (1 reply)

just to remind that, even before photo-manipulation software and digital photography became the default, photographers regularly edited photographs in the darkroom during exposure. It's not difficult to prevent scars & blemishes from appearing on the final print.

And all the names in editing tools stem from that time (dodging, burning etc)

kivihiili@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 23d (1 reply)

that sounds like an interesting read, please do post a reference if you can!

Jokes aside I'm actually curious too

Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 23d (18 replies)

Source? If you don't provide any I'm going to assume it's propaganda/cope.

I mean they're the same group that released these images of Lenin, were they also doctored?

Wow, solid. Thanks for following up

Not even ascribing any value judgments to damage done by a childhood disease. I just wanted to see how the photos were changed

antonim@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 23d (6 replies)

So, it has to be admitted that there's no strong, direct evidence for it. The main argument in that thread is that he's supposed to have some scarring, but none of the other photos from the time period show them either, so the guy just concludes they all must've been edited.

And yes, the look is somewhat different from the other photos, mainly the eyes, more widely open than on the other pics. But people can hold different facial expressions...

ephrin@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 23d (4 replies)

I mean, ok. You can choose to believe in sexy Stalin if you want. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

antonim@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 23d (3 replies)

It's not going to make much of a difference for me either way, I don't like people just because they're sexy.

You dropped an arm there, btw, here you go: \

Make sure you reinforce it this time, type it like this: \\

ephrin@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 23d (2 replies)

Thanks for the arm tip, I always forget. Have a keyboard shortcut in my phone for that guy, haha.

antonim@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 23d

Now his arms are short, wtf 😓

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Turns out it takes three slashes, one has to block the underscores from italicising the middle

Poxlox@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23d

Dude. They look incredibly edited to the naked eye.

lemmy.ml

Ok sorry but that's kind of hilarious

sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz · 10 pts · 23d

It's not even a bit. They just do that

kivihiili@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 23d

asking for a source(s) to back up a claim is perfectly reasonable thing to do, .ml user or not

oops conflated you with the original poster of the main comment sorry

Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · -2 pts · 23d (3 replies)

You hate Malaysians or something?

emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 22d

.ml is Mali.

SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 0 pts · 22d (1 reply)

That's not what the ".ml" means in this context. Perhaps it ought to, though, I always thought english speakers buying up all the .io or .ai domains felt a little colonialist.

In this case, "ml" means Marxist-Leninist. (And that's what person who created lemmy intended it to mean, that's not just me saying it.)

FleetwoodLinux@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 22d

The devs have stated before that the Mali TLD used to be free and that's why they picked it. https://lemmy.ml/post/68360/58307

Poxlox@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23d (1 reply)

Why would you assume the opposite instead of suspending judgement or doing your own research? Seems like poor reasoning.

Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 23d

Because there's a lot of anti-USSR propaganda in the US and I can't confirm a negative? FWIW it is mildly doctored to remove smallpox scaring, but not by the KGB because they didn't exist yet.

HappyFrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 23d (1 reply)

Why did you have to remind me of Sam Hyde?

antonim@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 23d

Ngl I saved this meme a long time ago. I remembered I found it funny, but as I was posting it here I realised I forgot who's the guy in the lower right. Some right wing shithead, but I just couldn't remember the name.

So, thank you for reminding me of Sam Hyde 👍
