I thought it was illegal to print money with a living person depicted

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 77 pts · 3d (3 replies)

When have trivial things like “laws” or “morals” ever stopped this administration??

Hello_there@fedia.io · 26 pts · 3d (2 replies)

What a shitty coin. If you're going to violate a law at least do it for something with taste. Like:

  • an Obama quarter for illinois with a reaper drone
  • a Clinton coin with a dress
  • a Biden coin with a staircase
  • a bush coin with a shoe
atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 3d

Bush with french fries to remind people how you are supposed to react to an asshole who tries to change the name of something.

pi3r8@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

I would love a Bush / Shoe coin. Who would ever think we would come to view that as not even a top 10 weird moment of a president.

arrow74@lemmy.zip · 12 pts · 2d

Apparently there's only 1 law that says that and the way it's worded applies only to paper money.

We've been relying on politeness and tradition to not do this. So yeah here we are

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 3 pts · 3d

Well you see, we ain't priting cuz you can't print on metal! Gotcha liberal!

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 3d

I thought so too! Same with naming public places.

But this admin shows me over and over again that the USA truly is the country of boundless possibilities.

Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2d

We can fix that.

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 36 pts · 3d (12 replies)

$2.44 to buy, worth a $1 at face value. The grift that keeps on grifting. Wonder what it costs to make?

halcyoncmdr@piefed.social · 25 pts · 3d (3 replies)

That's pretty normal when you're buying small amounts directly from the mint. You really only do that when you are looking to collect, and intend to hold them in mint condition until the value is increased from rarity years down the line.

This isn't particularly special other than the fact that the Mint is barred by law from making coins for living presidents. Well, until now of course because of Trump's massively inflated ego, complete lack of self awareness, and ignoring laws.

Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d

They’re actually not barred by law.

The law prohibits putting a living person on paper currency, and another law prohibits putting a living person on the reverse side of coins. Nothing about the obverse side. It’s only tradition to not put a living person on coins.

Calvin Coolidge appeared on the Sesquicentennial half dollar while he was president.

mrbutterscotch@feddit.org · 4 pts · 2d

Ahh so thats where the term mint condition comes from?! Guess I never connected those dots.

trebor_project@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 2d

"rarity years down the line" ain't true of course. There is no reason to ever buy these as an investment.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 13 pts · 3d (3 replies)

pennies

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 9 pts · 3d (2 replies)

Ohh I don’t doubt it one bit, but he just went on a rant about how we had to get rid of the penny because it cost too much to make…curious which one it is here lol

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 7 pts · 3d (1 reply)

he just went on a rant about how we had to get rid of the penny

well, there you go. Upcycling: 1 penny == 1 dollar == 2.44 dollars

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 2 pts · 3d

Hahaha love the use of the term upcycle, doubt they know what that means lol. Doesn’t that rhyme with inflation? 😂

ryathal@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2d

They learned to charge more after they accidentally "sold" coins at face value and people just bought them for credit card rewards.

SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3d (2 replies)

After the "national emergency," the yokels will think they're worth thousands.

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 2 pts · 3d

Well there are tons of commemorative coins that he has grifted, but this is the first that is being put into general circulation which is wild.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 3d

Has the Trump family invested in prepper equipment?

DakRalter@thelemmy.club · 31 pts · 3d (1 reply)

I'm disappointed this hasn't turned into a caption competition. There isn't even one edit here in the comments with the text next to his stupid paedo face edited to say something scathing 😟

athatet@lemmy.zip · -2 pts · 2d

Oh my. He is so scathed because of this.

Yup, I think it will look funny to see next to the other presidents' in history books

NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social · 2 pts · 2d

Long may he be remembered as the President who both looks like he is, and actually is, pooping his pants during photoshoots.

xistera@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 14 pts · 3d (1 reply)

I kinda want to hear trump try to pronounce 'semiquincentennial'

FinalRemix@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

It's a beautiful year. So many years this country has. No thanks to Sleepy Joe. Asleep at the wheel... they say. Everybody says it. Sleeping on the button. This is a failed nation but we can—the democrats, they're clamoring to rig the election. Crooked Hillary and her cronies are—so many coins from the mint. I said "make me a coin." And they said it couldn't be done. But I made them make it. Made the Trump coin. Available now at Spencer's Gifts.

Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 3d

Do not accept these as legal tender.

jordanlund@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 3d

https://www.axios.com/2026/09/02/trump-coins-real-money-legal-tender-spend-value

"The coins can be purchased in 25-coin rolls for $61 and 100-coin bags for $154.50"

With a $1 face value. So, yeah, you can spend them, but you lose $0.55 to $1.44 every time you do!

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 11 pts · 3d (4 replies)

I keep forgetting that the USA doesn't even use $1 coins, it's paper usually....

What a weird "world currency".

But that's nothing new and I don't want Trump to "fix" it with yet another ego-stroking grift. 🤮

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 3d

Man, after experiencing Euro currency, I much prefer it over the bulky USD currency. Like it feels so much better especially the coins

Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 3d (2 replies)

We have plenty of $1 coins though.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 3d (1 reply)

Oh ok, I didn't know that. Every bit of imagery I've seen, real or fiction, still or moving, points to the $1 bill being the main thing.

Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Yeah we’ve had dollar coins going back to 1794.

The famous ones are the Morgan Dollar, Peace Dollar, Susan B Anthony silver dollar, Eisenhower Dollar, and the whole presidential line of gold dollars that went up to Reagan initially, and added HW Bush after he passed.

Americans just don’t use coins that often so you don’t see them in circulation much. A lot of soda machines give out dollar coins as change though.

SmokedBillionaire@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 3d (6 replies)

If ever I get one of these pieces of shit in my pocket change its getting a stache.

osanna@lemmy.vg · 6 pts · 3d (3 replies)

a hitler stache?

SmokedBillionaire@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 3d (2 replies)

Exactly, I'm engraving it on.

osanna@lemmy.vg · 3 pts · 3d

man, I'd love it soooooo much if everyone did this, and that the majority (if not all) of them would have a hitler stache. Holy shit, I'd laugh so fucking hard if a movement started like this.

bobbosr2004@piefed.social · 2 pts · 3d

Me too!

Almacca@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3d (1 reply)

Hand it back and ask for actual currency.

LostCarcosan@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 2d

Keep it and melt it down into slag. Don't need shit like this in circulation

osanna@lemmy.vg · 7 pts · 3d

man, this "man's" penis (ugh, that put awful thoughts into my head) must be microscopic, given how much he plasters his name/face on everything.

also, isn't that the mugshot photo from when he turned himself into jail??

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 5 pts · 3d (8 replies)

This stupid shit reminds me of his first term with then treasury secretary Mnunchin and his wife holding the giant sheet of money…attention seeking whores.

Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin, wife cause internet sensation posing with sheets of money

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 9 pts · 3d (5 replies)

lol the pics

And the guy in the background. Wonder what's going through his head. Probably sth like "oh shit, they're not supposed to do that"

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 9 pts · 3d (2 replies)

Yah that shit was wild when that happened and we thought then that was batshit crazy…lol and behold, welcome to 2026.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 4 pts · 3d (1 reply)

2017... Trump1.0 just getting started ... the Rocket Boy debacle, one of his first globally perceived idiocies, these days it would hardly blip on the crazy meter.

BuckFutter@timeyak.com · 5 pts · 3d

Agreed…its crazy how far the what the fuck meter has swung to

SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3d (1 reply)

Another grift for the homeschooled morons who fell for the last one. They'll be buying these coins for above face value, thinking they've got some kind of heirloom.

halcyoncmdr@piefed.social · 5 pts · 3d

A hundred years from now they'll have a value, as American Nazi memorabilia. There is always a value in old coinage and relics.

blackberry28@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2d (1 reply)
  1. Buy them, wait til they are no longer purchasable, then resell them at a massive markup to degen MAGAs.
  2. ???
  3. Profit
Sabata11792@ani.social · 3 pts · 2d

You assume the demographic stupid enough to want them has money.

Carmakazi@piefed.social · 3 pts · 3d (1 reply)

As with the first time around, the only acceptable ownership of such memorabilia is if the original acquirer "retrieved" it directly from the source.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 3d

That is individual price. You can buy a stack of 25 for about $60 and a bag of 100 for $150.

I bought the sack for each of my children.

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 2d

Smart. Down the road they can sell it to degen folks who like buying nazi historical shit.

DarkDecay@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

Lol

Wispy2891@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 2d

Weird that it got approved with such a glaring error on the date, 1776 instead of 1946.
