To be fair this was addressed in friends. If I recall correctly, the apartment was her grandma's and rent controlled but she died and it became hers but the renters weren't aware so she had a crazy good rent controlled apt.
I hated the Ross/Rachel drama. Ross character could have been removed and show probably be funnier. But yes they were on break holyshit they used that line to goddamn much.

I've been able to succinctly summarize my disillusion with life as a young person using Friends and HIMYM as the lens of expectation. I longed for an abstract which was not available or possible, and I didnt know how to explain it to anyone until I had that aha moment.
Weekly eat with them and the kids is the fair cadence. Absolutely have them over in the morning and we’ll sometimes trade bus stop watching and regularly meet up with food at the ready. A few times we even ended up with double breakfast portion’s even we’ve had the same idea.
Being permanently online really has screwed up an entire generations perception of how folks lived before having a permanent dopamine screen in front of them to cure boredom.
You might call this moving the goalpost but there's a pretty huge difference between young professionals in their 20s and families with children who have settled down lol
Communal eating hasn't been the norm for a couple hundred years. You have the industrial revolution to "blame" for that, not the internet
As a working father with kids I exist on so little sleep the idea of having breakfast, much less making some for my neighbour is equally inconceivable.
I barely get a moment to drink my room temperature coffee while I pack their things for school.
Chandler has been best friend with Ross since college, and he lives across the hall from Ross' sister and he's close friends with her too, so it's not that weird that he comes over regularly given that they all hang out together all the time anyway. Specifically about breakfast, the girls also complain sometimes about the boys "stealing from their fridge" every day. And then there's Ross, who is the brother, actual family, so it's really not weird for him to eat with them if he happens to be on the way (although we don't know where he lives in the first half of the show). He seems to do it less frequently than Chandler and Joey, too. Phoebe is the one who is the least close with the rest, just a former roommate, and appropriately, she doesn't raid Monica's fridge every morning.
Maybe it's not the norm, but it shouldn't be that weird, the circumstances make it plausible. It's the whole point of the show being about a tight group of friends and family. If anything, I would imagine the weirder part is that they all keep their door unlocked almost all day long for anyone to raid the fridge, but that's the part where it's just "it's TV, don't overthink it."
I was moreso responding to the blanket insults from Mr. Boomer over here, not necessarily criticizing the show. It's not a completely unrealistic situation but as you described, the situation isn't the norm!

Not a neighbor, but I used to often meet up with one friend or another (sometimes more than one) for breakfast before work (retired now). And sometimes one of those friends would stop by my house for breakfast before work, but I wouldn't often stop by their house before work because my house is close to being on the way to work for them but their houses were out of my way so I'd usually go there after work or on days off. My wife often met her friends for breakfast before work (no one's house was on the way for anyone, so just at a restaurant/coffeeshop). Now that we're retired we still do the same things, we just don't go to work after, but I go to their houses more often because there is no more "on the way" for me.

Even my best friends and I didn't do that when we lived together. Hell, weekday breakfasts with girlfriends I've lived with were a rarity, too.

Not a neighbor, but I used to often meet up with one friend or another (sometimes more than one) for breakfast before work (retired now). And sometimes one of those friends would stop by my house for breakfast before work, but I wouldn't often stop by their house before work because my house is close to being on the way to work for them but their houses were out of my way so I'd usually go there after work or on days off. My wife often met her friends for breakfast before work (no one's house was on the way for anyone, so just at a restaurant/coffeeshop). Now that we're retired we still do the same things, we just don't go to work after, but I go to their houses more often because there is no more "on the way" for me.
