I was born in the 60's and feel ya. Funny that there's a lot of people who never knew life before internet like we never knew life without television. My take on it is we are bombarded. We see everything that happens all over the planet as soon as it happens. Yet our ability to affect things is still the same. That I feel makes us feel small. Spend less time looking at screens

Without a fire you have a better chance of seeing/hearing wildlife. For the record, most of my camping experiences are wilderness backpacking. I typed out more reasons in another response in this thread.

Cook on a stove. Way easier and quicker. Without a fire you'll see/hear more wildlife. You won't wake up with smokeface, puffy eyes, everything smelling like smoke. In my experience most camping injuries involve fire/firewood gathering. If backpacking, without a fire you'll save a lot of energy. No holes in expensive nylon gear. I know going without a fire is sacrilege to a lot of people, give it a try sometime

That's with 7% being an average, they were in the high teens in the 80's. Funny how that works. Rates go up, house prices go down and vice versa. Supply and demand of course but it's as if cost of living is based on what you can afford to pay not what the product is worth. Throw in property taxes and there's another pesky variable affecting the price. I once considered buying a vacation cabin in NY state because the price was remarkably cheap until I saw the property taxes. A mortgage gets paid off but property taxes are forever. I guess my long, rambling point I've piggyback onto yours is it's more complicated than "capitalism sucks"

What, no basement? Seriously though, I'm still patting myself on the back for digging out 50 buckets from the crawlspace under my house. Hats off to you!

I once responded with "honestly no but I mustn't have have be doing the speed limit or we wouldn't be here". It got a laugh and I was let off with a warning. For the record, I'm a white guy with a mustache. Cops love mustaches
