Would be amusing to see the look on her face if a Muslim sat next to her on a plane and started preaching. Or a Hindu. Or a Christian from a different sect.
All these special snowflakes need to fuck right off and let the rational people live their lives in peace.

I hear what you are saying, but that's a matter of perspective. I tend to be no more or less scared of Muslims than I am Christians. The basic door to door proselyting strategy (which has a 0% success rate) to make sure they don't leave the cult, then...
Manticore@lemmy.nz · 25 pts · 3d
Yes. It reinforces the idea that the world is corrupt, fallen, that it won't accept them. That only the cult will accept them. It reinforces the separation of cult and world, and makes cult the only attainable form of community.
Community is the cult's greatest weapon. Gangs, religions, the manosphere, neo-Nazi... so many groups work by finding the isolated and disempowered, offering them a community that will adopt them (conditionally). Isolated people swallow the conditions readily in order to have a community, even an unhealthy one. Humans are social creatures.
Getting your members to do behaviours you know will see them rejected (like door-knocking) reinforces the indoctrination that only your cult can offer community. Even if they have doubts or discomfort, they won't leave.

In my wayward youth I was heavily into church and went to a conference where you went to classes about evangelising and apologetics (arguing your beliefs) and then approaching people out in public to talk about Jesus. The success rate is low but it's not zero.
Some of my strongest convictions against Christianity come from learning they told flat out lies in the apologetics classes and used lots of logical fallicies.

Beware not to conflate the thousand, likely million, different religions and belief systems that existed and exist worldwide for Abrahamic religions.
Have you ever saw some Luciferian practitioner going door-to-door preaching the words of the Lightbringer?
Have you ever saw Wiccan priestesses hijacking an airplane to try and convert people to Goddess Hekate?
Have you ever saw some Umbanda's Mãe de Santo yelling Laroyê Exu out loud?
Maybe some Thelemite trying to make people to read Liber Al Vel Legis, or some Hermetist trying to shove The Kybalion onto people's throats?
Me neither.
Similar thing goes with my Lilith-centered belief. My religious practices are mostly between me and Her, and whenever I do something public (devotional art, carving of sigils/seals, etc), it's never directed at "converting others".
So, again, beware not to conflate "religion" with the Abrahamic ones. Or you risk becoming the very kind of "religious zealot" you swore to be against.

Every acceptance of superstition lays the groundwork for a belief in the supernatural. Every Homeopathy-Karen, every Wicca-Hippie, while peaceful and harmless in and of themselves provides the fertile ground on which a bigger misconception of reality can grow.
Should you be able to have your own beliefs and worship as you please as long as you don't intrude on the rights of others?
Absolutely
But should society consider every expression of unfounded belief a failure of education in critical thinking? Yes.
Supernatural thinking and superstition are fundamentally at odds with a congruent model of reality, they are infectious memes and can fester into extremism if left unchecked. Not necessarily in the individual but absolutely on a societal scale.
The Wiccan priestess, the Luciferian practitioner, the Thelemite are not the Hijackers but they absolutely are the grains of sand that in their totality create the wandering dunes that ever so slowly swallow civilizations. Do we say "fuck that grain of sand in particular"? No, but nonetheless we fight the dunes.

But they don't. If they can't take a selfie in the voting booth then it ain't gonna happen buddy.
TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 3d
This is a classic hangup. There's literally no possible way you could know this, but you're certain of it. Not only that, but you brought it up when it had nothing to do with anything. Kinda a sign you're fixated on the idea.
Tikiporch@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 3d
Eh. I'm just interested in human psychology, so while you think it had "nothing to do with anything" to you, it did have meaning to me. And it's preposterous to think there's no way to know how human psychology is reflected at the ballot box.
I mean I only made an observation, but it's not like it has no basis in reality. I just think it makes intuitive sense to conclude that individuals who are highly self-absorbed wouldn't necessarily care about a collective, relatively anonymous civic duty like voting. Vain people probably love the *stage *of politics, but they are far less interested in the *chore *of voting.
So I'm not saying vain people AS A WHOLE skip elections. In fact I think the opposite there, that they are likely to be much more vocal in the political sphere. Narcissistic political participation is largely driven by a desire for a captive audience and public recognition. Activities like protesting, posting on social media, or aggressively debating are highly visible. In contrast, the act of voting in a democratic election is intentionally anonymous. An election ballot offers no audience, no applause, and no opportunity to publicly demonstrate superiority.
So when you isolate the physical, logistical act of **voting **from the rest of the political sphere, the behavior of highly vain or narcissistic individuals trends toward disinterest in the process. Vain individuals often possess a grandiose sense of self-importance and believe their direct intervention is required to fix things. The realization that their single vote carries the exact same mathematical weight as millions of other voters can feel insulting to their sense of authority.

This is absolutely completely untrue. Especially since the woman was latino with a Spanish accent.
You know what. People probably don't tell you this enough, but shut the fuck up.
Edit: I fully concede my point on my assumptions concerning her race and accent. That was my own prejudice working against me and I was unable to filter it in this comment. I apologize for my racial sensitivity.
However, I will not concede my point on how absolutely untrue comments statements are about Brown and Muslim people being treated differently in this particular scenario. And I will once again reiterate for that person to shut the fuck up.
GarboDog@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d
We cannot vouch if she’s of Latino decent since we’re bad at telling that kind of stuff (she doesn’t look Latino at all, just a typical whit lady to us with a tan), but we can tell that’s very much not a Spanish accent.
Bthest is very much right, especially since Muslim, brown, and various other minorities have been removed from planes for far lesser to even just existing (did you magically forget the fucn racist executive order 13769 Muslim ban on planes they tried pushing in 2017??) no yeah she’s very much privileged and no we also wouldn’t feel safe with her on a plane or anyone else shouting/harassing/disturbing the peace.
We’re not sure if the guy was security or not but him trying to be respectful we’re guessing he either didn’t/couldn’t request security or thought he could handle the situation on his own. Either way there was extreme favoritism towards her being a white Christian (he probably didn’t want to escalate it himself because putting the airline/himself on a Christian hit list is horrible) especially with her trying to escalate the situation several times egging them in to being physical to her or provoking.
In any case tldr your wrong, her religion and skin color were deciding factors in their actions and she’s not Latino nor was that a Spanish accent. Mejor suerte la próxima vez, así que cállate la puta boca. :/
mechoman444@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 1d
I'll concede my original point. I was wrong about her race, nationality, and accent. Looking back, that was my own unchecked prejudice. I made an assumption based on how she looked and spoke, and I shouldn't have. That's on me.
That said, I think you're doing something very similar when you confidently assert that she was treated differently because she was white and Christian. The video doesn't establish that. It's an inference about the motives of the airline staff, not evidence. You're presenting speculation as though it's a proven fact.
As for Executive Order 13769, that isn't really relevant here. It was an executive order signed by Donald Trump restricting entry into the United States from several Muslim-majority countries. It was enormously controversial, challenged in court, and widely criticized as discriminatory. But it was an immigration policy, not a policy directing airlines to remove Muslims from domestic flights. Pointing to an unpopular executive order from an administration that many people already viewed as racially insensitive doesn't demonstrate that race or religion were the deciding factors in this completely separate incident.
If your argument is simply that she should have been removed from the plane sooner because she was causing a disturbance, I can understand that position. But claiming she received preferential treatment because she was white and Christian requires evidence specific to this incident, not assumptions about the motivations of the people involved.
Edit: One more important point, because I think a lot of people get this confused:
The United States is not the Donald Trump administration. There are tens of millions of Americans who do not support what his administration is doing and actively oppose many of its policies, including me.
Please don't take the actions of one administration and attribute them to the American people as a whole. The United States is a nation of over 330 million people with a wide range of political beliefs, and no single administration speaks for every American.
GarboDog@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d
Not sure how you can say she’s not being treated better when there have been many people arrested/literally dragged/denied access but ok, she more than likely just got into another plane and stfu that time while (again) many others would’ve been banned from that air port or more likely arrested by air port police.
Regardless the full picture isn’t clear due to lack of public evidence except her video (unless the airline made a statement but we’re too lazy to look for it rn, typing this while rewatching one piece lol) so if you want to discuss further on her being escorted as calmly even though she was pointing out she totally didn't have a gun or bomb (that right there is usually an instant tackle) we both would need more evidence on what actually went down with how the airline treated her. But from the video so far yeah she was treated far better than many others along with a long well documented history of other similar incidents (and some we’ve personally experienced like how while working at star bucks we had to kick out anyone soliciting, including religious stuff, however that was not including Christians (we kicked them out anyways idgaf)) it’s hard to believe she was treated as well as Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph, Xavier Veal and 5 other people of color being kicked off an American Airlines plane with no valid reason, David Dao a Vietnamese physician being physically assaulted and dragged off a United Express plane, two unnamed muslim couple kicked off Delta Airlines, and many others. None of them were being disruptive or even a bother to anyone else and yet they get harassed, dragged out or worse assaulted. Instead they let the lady say her spoil then calmly walked her out while (again) she was trying to initiate confrontation several times. So sorry but we’d have to disagree on her being treated as unfairly as others when there’s a bit of a pattern.
Also yes, Executive Order 13769 was an immigration ban but overall it was treated and implemented as a blanket ban as Muslims and other minorities were affected heavily in usa as well. Damage was literally immediate with families torn apart, people detained for no reason, blocked even state by state as they were still not a citizen yet. So glad they finally stopped this whole charade but it also wasn’t the first time this stuff has happened, it’s been going on since 11/9/2001 (September 11th 2001) with many people being discriminated for being Muslim and/or for religious clothing. But even through it all we can still both easily agree it was super fucked. People needed help and usa was obligated to assist like all other able bodied countries and fail time and time again, calling themselves a nation of immigrants is a joke.
And to your PS: we were born in USA, the system failed us severely. We’ve been discriminated and harassed several time’s by strangers even religious groups for being either disabled or trans. We left USA right before Trump took office literally spending our entire life savings to get here in the EU and holy shit we’ve never felt safer than before. It’s night and day on how much usa has failed. Donald Trump is just everything the USA political powers and 1% was to afraid to say and now what? USA didn’t magically get shit When Trump got into office in 2016 it was already trash. It didn’t get saved when Biden got in it was still held in place in a stand still, and 2024 it definitely got worse since the dirty douche figured out how to fuck everyone over and get paid doing so. Anyone who says USA was great before Trump is privileged.
mechoman444@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d
I'll start with Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph, and Xavier Veal. That case did, in fact, involve racial discrimination by the airline, and it was ultimately settled out of court. Those three men were initially removed from the plane over alleged offensive body odor, but after the situation was reviewed by airline personnel, they were allowed back on board. They were not screaming, yelling, or causing a disturbance. So while that case is real, it has nothing to do with the situation you're describing. More importantly, the people who were removed complied with the crew's instructions. It doesn't lend much support to your argument.
The woman in this case, Whitney Lynn, was banned from flying on all airlines owned by that airline group, which I believe includes three or four carriers. She also wasn't forcibly removed because she complied with the order to leave the aircraft. She may have been loud and belligerent, but she did not physically resist.
As for the executive order, it was not legally considered a blanket ban on Muslims. You're applying that label based on your own interpretation rather than how it was ultimately treated in law.
You're falling into the trap of steering the conversation toward a conclusion you already want to reach, in this case, condemning the Trump administration and portraying the United States as uniquely terrible. That's not what we're discussing here. Racial profiling exists. Not just in the United States, but virtually everywhere. Racist incidents happen in every country. Some receive extensive media coverage; many do not.
I'm well aware of my country's shortcomings. However, the claim that people are generally afraid to walk the streets for their own safety is simply not an accurate description of everyday life in the United States. If believing that helps reinforce your view of America, that's your prerogative. But it doesn't make it true.

Primary symbol for religion is a medieval torture device often including the active torture of their messiah. Messiah's zombie corpse walks the earth again after 3 days of decay. Regular ritualistic symbolic cannibalism ceremonies (or actual cannibalism if Catholic or otherwise believe in transubstantiation). The higher ranking the Angel, the more monstrous/eldritch in nature and appearance. God turns rivers to blood and kills thousands of babies in Egypt, and every person and animal on Earth but a single boat in the Flood over personal grievances. Destroy two cities for the crime of being inhospitable to two visiting angels, sparing only the one man, Lot, and his family that show them hospitality, but also murder his wife for the crime of looking upon the destruction by turning her to salt. And also Lot's daughters intoxicated and rape him to have his children.
The Bible is dark, man. And Christians normalize all this shit.

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · -9 pts · 2d
So you think delaying a plane is the only rule around speech that exists in the world? No other laws exist?
Or are you only able to compare exactly identical situations?
Doesn't really matter. I know everyone will now be playing "find 100 differences" with those two situations bringing up one irrelevant thing after another while completely missing the only thing that matters: in both cases it was legal to suppress speech, lemmy reacted differently because in one case they agree with the speaker and in the other case they don't.
PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 2d
No, I think bob vylen or whatever his name is keeps his speech to his shows and the media and doesn't subject unwilling people to his opinions when they have no escape.
