While that will certainly happen, it won't end the environment that created him or the interests he represents. A brief respite, is as optimistic as I dare to be.

DarkFuture@lemmy.world · 83 pts · 1d (4 replies)

I'm just looking forward to not hearing him voice his pedo rapist opinions anymore. It's a particular frequency that just won't exist anymore once his pedo mouth is permanently silenced.

Akh@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Well, the GOP has many more of those

BooBees@fedinsfw.app · 7 pts · 1d

They've burned a lot of political capital with a lot of people, though.. gonna take them time to usher in that much political will from the swing voters and a few key voting blocks

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 22h

Actually, you mentioning that specific trait of him reminded me that the FBI and other American autorities have been protecting the pedos and the pedo ring by covering up their activities for decades, much longer than Trump has been President and through both Republican and Democrat administrations.

Which kinda reinforces the point of the previous poster about the environment that created them and the interests he represents - they've been there for much longer than he's had power and clearly they're neither changing nor leaving.

Jaysyn@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21h

Some lucky mortician will get to superglue his lips together.

Stupidmanager@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 1d

No. You’ll get 20 new clowns all fighting to be the new king. With luck they’ll eat each other as they step on the backs of everyone else. You want to see change, project 2025 needs to burn.

Also eat the rich.

Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 18 pts · 1d (11 replies)

I don’t even expect a respite- someone will pick up the “populist” mantle immediately. At best, it would be just a changing of the mask

Nollij@sopuli.xyz · 11 pts · 1d (2 replies)

A number of people are clearly already trying. They are all failing miserably. Amazingly, none of them have as much charisma, at least not with such a wide audience.

tburkhol@slrpnk.net · 10 pts · 1d (1 reply)

None of them had a 14-year propaganda campaign to convince Americans that they're "good at business."

GraniteM@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 13h

Trump also represents a pretty impressive combination of horrible, charismatic, and authentic.

He is truly, truly horrible. He embodies the ugliness that a lot of people see in the world and in themselves, and is willing to cause harm to the world around him in a way that they wish they could.

He is, in his own utterly fucked up way, charismatic. He's eager to aggressively beclown himself for applause and to sell his poison in a way that Stephen Miller or Ron DeSantis couldn't match.

He's authentically awful. Every word he says serves his own corrupt enrichment and aggrandizement, and he makes no secret of that, even when telling lies. When he's lying, he's obviously lying. When he's stupid, he's authentically stupid, not pretending.

Voters are very sensitive to all three of those categories, and they can tell when someone isn't entirely any one of them. Trump is the rare beast to max out all three.

Serinus@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Anyone smarter will damage the country less. Anyone dumber will drool on themselves while trying to speak.

Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Anyone smarter will damage the country differently. There is currently an economic force pushing the US toward a future where its citizens are separated and specific groups disenfranchised to pull money toward the ultra-wealthy and major voting blocs. Fewer overtly stupid decisions, plenty of horrors to come.

Tower@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d

Exactly. He's an idiot. The ones whispering in his ear, not so much.

arrow74@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

It's rare for cults to survive after their leader dies.

I don't see the movement continuing. Some will rally to the new face, but many won't.

Even today support for Trump is slowly waning with his base growing smaller. The issue with the American system is he can lose all support today and continue. Even if dems retake a majority in the Senate it takes 2/3rds vote to remove the president.

Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d

Trump is just a face to an economic force backing horrific practices. He’ll be gone and the well of money will find someone else to hop in.

Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1d

If Vance invokes the 25th amendment in January, he'll get the support he needs.

AmyAye@nord.pub · 2 pts · 1d

Also the condemnation of everyone celebrating will make the people bitching over everyone being indifferent to fuckface Kirk look quaint.

MousePotatoDoesStuff@piefed.social · 1 pts · 23h

Hopefully someone left-wing can pick up that mantle instead.

CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 1d

It won't fix all of the problems, but it'll definitely fix one of them.

Kraiden@piefed.social · 5 pts · 1d

Absolutely. I will ponder this as I sip the bubbly

While we all know who it is, there's a few deaths that would be celebrated globally.

ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip · 12 pts · 1d (7 replies)

Honestly there like 3 people that could trigger this.

khannie@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (6 replies)

What's your top three?

deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz · 9 pts · 1d (5 replies)

In no particular order: Trump, Putin, Netanyahu Musk.

AmyAye@nord.pub · 9 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Musk over Netanyahu, but he is probably too young to go soon.

deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz · 2 pts · 1d

Pretty sure Hitler's death was international news.

teslekova@lemmy.ml · 25 pts · 1d (1 reply)

It didn't spread as fast as this one will though. Every timezone will get the news immediately once it breaks anywhere.

Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 16h

They had amateur radio at that point, so that news was certainly disseminated through official channels within minutes.

A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 1d (15 replies)

and so was 9/11, and Katrina.

both showed incredible, international outpourings of support, generosity, and kindness, and opened the door to a potential better future.

and both opportunities were frittered away on stupidity and arrogance.

mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 26 pts · 1d (7 replies)

My thoughts exactly. I will totally celebrate Trump's death, but anyone who thinks its going to change anything for the better in any substantial way is sadly oblivious. In fact it frustrates me that so many people seem to think everything will be fine once Trump dies. Already the seeds of inaction and complacency are sewn.

A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1d (1 reply)

the problem is that trump has advanced the republican agenda by 300 miles (to use a convenient conversational example), and when he dies, the advance will falter and fall back to maybe 250 miles.

and the fools will celebrate that as a return to normalcy and a victory, ignorant to the 250 miles of advancement they made, secured, and locked down by their complacency.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 22h

Judging by what happenned after the last Trump presidency, I think your expectation that over 80% of what he and his party have done will be actually undone by a Democrat POTUS is incredibly optimistic.

My bet would be at most 10% - so 300 miles his way and only 30 miles back after him.

SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

You don't get it. Without dear leader they fall apart. They don't have anyone to replace him, at least no one their voters care even half as much about as him. The cult will die with him and that is a HUGE opportunity to capitalize on.

mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 1d

Nah bro, I wish, but nah. The damage is done. Don't you see? The cult, Trump, all that was the booster rocket. This shit is in stable orbit now. It doesn't matter what happens to that apparatus anymore.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 22h

Trump is a symptom, not the disease.

A horrible, horrible symptom killing that diseased country even faster and making it spread even more and nastier efflusions all around than usual, but none the less somebody like him would never have reached that position if America wasn't already profoundly sick.

If the disease isn't cured all that will happen is that another one like him is bound to get the post in at most 8 years after a caretaker POTUS that does nothing to undo the shit he did, same as last time.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22h

It won’t be fine, but no one else has whatever twisted mind control is necessary to control the worshippers. I’m sure they’ll try to apply things smarter, they’ll get the backing of their billionaire owner, but it’s not intelligence that made all this happen, not ability. It’s all the sycophants and grifters falling inline and that won’t happen for someone else

raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Comparing 9/11 or Katrina to the end of WW2 is a tad inaccurate to say the least.

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 1d (4 replies)

It's also simply untrue - it took much more time for information to travel, and no one was 'celebrating' 9/11 aside from... well, you should know the types.

ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online · 2 pts · 21h (3 replies)

Mossad?

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 18h (2 replies)

I was thinking more the 'Anything against the west is good' types, but yeah Mossad was probably pretty pleased with how things played out.

ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online · 2 pts · 15h (1 reply)

The only people confirmed to have been dancing in the streets in response to 9/11 were confirmed mossad agents. Israel tried to show videos of Muslims and Arabs celebrating the attacks, but all of them were people actually celebrating sports teams or weddings.

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 15h

Yeah I don't know about any of that, but it doesn't surprise me - they are quite ghoulish. Steelmanning, even if the Muslim and Arab people were celebrating - that still doesn't count as global celebrations.

What's the joke again?

Man stops at a newsagent every day to read the headlines but never buys a paper.
When asked, he says "I'm looking for an obituary."
When the newsagent tells him obituaries aren't on the front pages he says
"The one I'm looking for will be."

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 45 pts · 20h (20 replies)

I've been looking forward to his death too but the more I think about it, it's a mistake to think his death will somehow change the direction things are going

America is conveniently putting all the blame on Trump and ignoring that it took a lot of people to put Anerica in the position it's in. If the problem were JUST Trump, he wouldn't have come anywhere close to being elected. A sane country would have reacted to his behaviour by laughing him off and never giving him any votes or airtime. Trump is in power because an alarming number of Americans (not necessarily a majority, but a lot) agree with him

I've always been annoyed by people wanting to go back in time and kill Hitler. If it wasn't Hitler, it just would have been someone else. There's this strange persistent myth that if we get rid of one evil man, it all goes away. Hitler didn't singlehandedly kill 11 million people. 11 million people aren't rounded up and killed because one man decided to do it, it required people to go along with it

AlboTheGuy@feddit.nl · 10 pts · 20h (4 replies)

I mean, of course, then again uniting under a single banner/man does make the faction stronger, under him they simply can't make any mistake, someone else would have a harder time getting away with the same things.

This does not take anything away from how evil they are and how they still exist and will after him

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 20h (3 replies)

Why would someone else have a harder time getting away with stuff? What is special about Trump? I legit don't understand how he gets away with things that supposedly nobody else would. Has he made a deal with the devil for immunity from all possible consequences? I'm legitimately asking, why is he different?

Rekorse@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 19h (1 reply)

The powerful people that run the world don't care about the bad things he has done. They have a different moral code than everyone else and its pretty fucked.

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 19h

Right, which is why I think another MAGA would get away with exactly the same stuff

Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 16h

Yeah he just made a deal with the devil... Nah, in all seriousness it's the way he appeals to the uneducated and hateful masses. You can't replicate his special mix of pure hatred and greed inorganically. It isn't that there can't be another, more so that no one even remotely in a position where they could take over doesn't have the same undeniable sway. They'll stop being so united.

Doesn't mean they'll stop being a threat, it'll just mean it's a bit easier to deal with

postmateDumbass@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 16h (2 replies)

Yes.

Trump is the symptom, not the disease.

Its obvious the big big money players are driving his agenda.

They are daring the poor people to fight for their existence.

PS: re: Hitler. Go back in time. Take meth and cash. Find hitler. Get him on meth, buy enough art to get him notoriety, teach him punk music, let punk music advance egalitarian freedom and anarchy, so fascism has harder time gaining traction.

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 15h

Might be a symptom but you still breathe a sigh of relief when your headache clears up even if your alcoholism is going to cause another one tomorrow.

Smoogs@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 15h

I would blame the non voters and misinformation and the complacency of it more.

The reps are evil in nature and simply feed on such opportunities. They will always be there. The evil will always be there. Everything else adapts with time to prevent it from such power.

This time we all let ourselves down on this one.

anarchy79@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 18h (4 replies)

I don't think that's true at all, "if not Hitler then someone else", as if it was some kind of unavoidable deterministic fate.

Personally I will just be ecstatic over never having to hear his dumb fucking voice again.

The cabal of fascists infesting and rotting democracy like termites will have to be dealt with and if anything, at least our shared hatred of Trump has made us come together and organize and prepare to fumigate the whole fucking place.

OccamsRazer@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 15h (1 reply)

Trump has a cult of personality that took years to build, and isn't simply transferred to someone else. MAGA doesn't survive if he's gone. Will there still be fascists, racists, and so on? Yes, but they won't be unified anymore, and they won't be grouped together with the rest of the right anymore either. This will be good for the left in the short term because the right will be less powerful, but also bad for the left because it won't be as easy to attack the right.

anarchy79@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 10h

No doubt it will hurt them, but they will recoalesce into some new golem down the line, and I don't think it'll take long. They're loud and energetic, all that energy still has to go somewhere- and remember the fundamentalist Christians. They sure as hell ain't leaving anytime soon, and they're already mobilized and old in the game. I think once the Diaper Balloon pops whoever grabs the throne will be pushed as the new idol and FOX et al will brainwash the crowd into supporting them.

That's my bet at least.

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 18h (1 reply)

It would have been somebody else just as it would be someone else now if not Trump. This is just how the political tide keeps turning

anarchy79@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 10h

That was never inevitable. The breeding ground, or the bacterial culture was spreading in the vat, but certainty was never on the table. We can change things, we can avert disaster, we can elect competent leaders. Case in point: Mamdani.

CumbrianCucumber@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 14h

Yes and no. You're certainly right, most of Trump's popularity comes from Russian propaganda, and far more institutional issues like underfunded education, the blind eye to the Southern states after the Civil War, leftover Red Scare paranoia, and rampant lobbying.

That being said, using the disease metaphor, I think of Trump as more of a "complication" than a "symptom". Something that's drastically exacerbated a problem that was already there. Every other politician, even ones as corrupt and self-serving and dictatorial as him, all have to play the PR game and dress their rancid fantasies up as something that would benefit the public. Trump meanwhile, can transparently go back on every single promise, back stab his every last ally, out himself as perhaps the most prolific paedophile in human history, and order his fans into a street militia, and somehow, his supporters just accept it as part of his "brand".

The US was probably always going in this direction, but I still think it wouldn't have got here half as fast, maybe not even a third of the speed Trump's been disassembling it without him. I don't really know why Trump's popularity was never affected by his vile actions until this year - they would sink any other public figure. Maybe it's the right wing press playing defense for him at every turn, maybe it was his "joke candidate" status he earned back in 2015, maybe it's his history in the public spotlight. Whatever it is, far right politicians around the world have tried to replicate what Trump has, and they've all failed. Because of that, I still think that the Big Beautiful Obituary will be well worth celebrating!

Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 18h

You have to take small victories while understanding the bigger picture. It will still be glorious, although I am saving up cheap 100 proof vodka as the asshat does not deserve good booze or my money in buying said booze. I might add a champagne if it's less than 20 bucks.

SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 13h

Perversely, the "great men" view of history that prompts us to want to kill baby hitler is an authoritarian one.

Authoritarian leaders often adopt the narrative that they are special saviors uniquely equipped to fix the problems of the world. The much less romantic truth is that even if we could trust someone with that kind of power, the problems that plague our world are too big to be solved by a single person, no matter how well-intentioned or capable that person may be.

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 9h

It's more about hoping the cult breaks down and won't be unified anymore. Maybe vance can't jedi mind trick people the same way or something? Republican party fractures, rfk jr becomes totally irrelevant, etc.

But yes long terms the problems are still there, the hope is for some kind of respite, force the fascist elements to retreat, and democracy fashions some tools to defend itself better moving forward.

But yeah idk i really hope all the epstein stuff can come out, for example -- more witnesses come forward, actual accountability and jail time for the perps involved -- but it would not be a huge surprise if none of that ever happens

In terms of hitler, if he had died in the war or something, maybe France would have gone full fascist genocide. France was really a leader of antisemitism much more so than Germany before hitler rose to power. But of course, those are the kinds of hypotheticals that can only have absurd answers.

moakley@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14h

Ok, but what if it really is him? I mean if we're assigning moral blame then you're right: many, many people are responsible. But negative outcomes for evil beliefs aren't a given. What if people are always just this stupid, and it took a certain person with certain traits to bring this out of them? Did people change, or were they just latently stupid but mostly harmless this entire time? Things were going pretty well for a while there, so what if we were teetering on the edge that whole time?

His death might also give some of the smarter fascists an off-ramp, which could reduce their critical mass. I'm NOT saying they deserve an off-ramp, but if it means society starts heading in the right direction again, maybe it's worth it. We'd all prefer to excise the tumor completely, but sometimes that seems impossible. Remission would still be a blessing.

I guess what I'm saying is, let's not be too cynical while we're celebrating this person's death.

FoxtrotDeltaTango@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 11h

Yeah, this unfortunately. It’s the far right MAGA extremists who voted him in

We need to hold them accountable, throw them in jail, deport them and blacklist them

I've no doubt they'll try to create an animated Trump, but the tech's not there yet, and he'll feel wrong to his base.

No cult of personality has survived the death of its leader without an extensive transition process in advance, either to usher in a replacement leader, or to turn it into a cult of an idea.

The long line is what will help. That whole line of them will be at each other's throats trying to take his place. It will divide their party and divide their supporters. Eventually, one will claim victory and rise to prominence, but until then, they'll be in crippling chaos.

That's not how this kind of shit works. A dictatorship does not simply appoint a successor and carry on. Even if it is firmly entrenched, there will well be a power struggle among potential successors, that often brings down the entire regime. And in the US the fascists aren't firmly entrenched just yet.

distal@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 19h

I believe this is completely incorrect. This idea of a power struggle concerning successors being of super high importance reduces the problem down to individuals. Regimes don't fail because of small skirmishes, or because of a leader dying.

I wish I could agree, but from the UK to Germany to Australia to South Africa, not insignificant amounts of people have taken a look at the USA and gone "I want some of that too". At least Americans had the 'excuse' of thinking they were gonna get cheaper eggs or some shit. But the people who have had the advantage of watching this unfold from the outside and still want their own wannabe MAGA movements, are just trash with no excuse.

I think a 3rd of the world will celebrate, a 3rd will cry, and the other 3rd won't be able to tell the difference between the other two.

I'm against the death penalty, and the details of his capture and death weren't released immediately. Based on what I recall I know now that it would have been unlikely to capture him alive. Jesus is a verified factual historical figure who was executed more or less according to Biblical tradition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_Jesus

My understanding is that the Romans killed Jesus because they just wanted to avoid Jewish people rioting against Roman occupation. The Jewish priests framed Jesus so this would happen because he was speaking against specifically their religious power (He was not anti-rome).

I subscribe to the belief that some of Jesus' disciples faked his resurrection and started a cult.

AgentSeven@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d (5 replies)

It seems likely that he was an actual person. It is not verified, nor is it verifiable. This is the kind of shit Bible apologists like to whip out as if it confirms their beliefs. Almost to a person, people who refer to the Historicity of Jesus Wikipedia page use terms like "verified fact" in the same breath. If you're not intending to be a Bible apologist, you should probably take a different tack.

Nobody (especially the apologist) gives a shit whether some rando Nazarine created a religious movement. They were a dime a dozen. What the people who bring this up actually care about is that said Nazarine is the Son of God and the Christian Messiah. Just because he existed, doesn't mean he is anything of the sort, or that God even exists. There is literally no other useful knowledge to be had in pointing out that Jesus was probably a real person, so if you're hell bent on making sure everybody knows he was so totally super-duper real guys, then everybody figures you must have an agenda.

Much of the 'historical Jesus' movements especially since the 1970's or so, and especially in the USA, often a little strange ime, no one knows and it's fine.

FC Baur > Ernest Renan > Joseph Smith > Bart Ehrman kinda line...evangelical adult Jesus nerds hoping something in the 27 book NT can be clung to but struggling with magical women from Eve to Mary being core. It's been big business in the US over the past 50yrs or so with the SBL evangelizing Markan Priority and seven letters of St Saul and all those bible schools trying really hard to ignore anything not in the little 66 book KJV's for lolz.

Jesus of Nazareth is far from verified afaiu.

He pops up in Marcion's New Testament ~140CE and peeps not sure if the christos is flesh or not there and the discussion around this issue hasn't really gone away despite burning rather a lot of people and books mentioning it since..the wiki article you cite suggests dismissing them as 'fringe' or 'radical' instead of burning or screaming heretic. Prior to ~140CE is anyone's guess and why those defending their Chistology be it Islam, Tewahedo or SBL say "Most of our scholars agree xyz" instead of providing any evidence.

This seems like St Paul: why?

Why would the noble St Mark do what we accuse St Marcion of? We can trust St Mark as he's the bro-science Jesus evangelist

Good scholars often don't comment upon this stuff as there is little worth saying but Michael Penn gives a little insight into the weird world of 'the historical Jesus' in NT scholarship here.

huppakee@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Post doesn't say the first time someones death was cele bvbration, just the first global celebration. Thought the post was about Christmas or a celebration like that. But celebrating the end of a war makes sense too.

Nollij@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I've never thought about it until now, but there are definitely different definitions (or at least uses of the word) for celebrate. Same for your favorite sports team winning the championship, vs any observance of previous victories.

huppakee@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Yeah i interpreted this more like a celebration of an anniversary than a victory of a match. Looking at it for a second time i also see this could be written about something that hasn't happened yet, while i read it as celebrating something that happened once.

Misrepresenting the situation might make you feel better but it doesn't help anyone else.
