Apparently there’s basically no downside to waking up “naturally” to pee in the middle of the night as long as you get back to sleep right after. You naturally wake up in the parts of sleep where you’re almost awake anyway.

monkeys. They literally spend their whole day looking for food

Makes me a bit less proud to be their descendant. Why couldn’t we descend from the stately raven. Corvids consistently show that they have a lot of free time. Same with parrots.

Because that’s the foundation of a civilization? When humanity was able to produce more per farmer than they could eat is when society flourished the most. That allows other people to live off the farmer’s back and do other things. That might sound like they were taking advantage of them, but if Pythagoras and Archimedes and everyone else had to spent their days in the field, we wouldn’t have all that we do now. And I’m sure the farmers didn’t mind when those non-farmers came up with the tractor.

I mean it’s fine, but development is only one part of engineering, which is why I don’t like the term.

And then the apology seems written by ai.

You can’t really tell these days except when it’s very obvious, which this post is not.

Besides, why does it matter who wrote it? Before AI it would have been his PR manager, now it’s AI. People just like to blame everything on AI. Even if he had written it himself, it’s not like there’s some law where everything you post on linkedin must be true.

Which is completely stupid, you can perform engineering without having paid the order and it doesn’t feel like there’s any other word that explains the job quite as easily.

Looking up synonyms though it seems I could legally call myself a “software mastermind”, “software plotter” or “software captain”.

That doesn’t change the fact that there used to be a cheater every ~10 games, now I don’t think I’ve seen a single one since Vanguard. It doesn’t have to catch 100% of cheaters, if it went from catching 10% to 99.99% that’s a massive win.

If the tradeoff is that you can afford a house in the countryside instead of an overpriced appartment in the city, I think I’d accept the long commute, I’d just press for fewer days at the office and be happy

What do you mean it doesn’t work? As much as I hate having to keep a windows partition for the occasional game of league, Vanguard has made a huge difference in Masters+ games.

Also why are you talking about Americans? Is it like a joke or is the person actually American or something?

Probably because going by the amount of posts and comments about American politics, Lemmy is 95%+ American.

He's just some schmuck with money

To his credit, he did come up with the perfect formula to get kids’ attention. If you look at his first videos and compare it to the recent ones, it’s insane the difference. Nowadays there isn’t a wasted second, no moment for a thought to begin to bubble in your head.

Indeed, if that person went and said that IRL to regular people they’d be laughed at. But alas one of the biggest symptoms of echo chambers is not being able to recognize you’re in one.

Lemmy in particular is becoming more and more extremist as time goes and nobody seems to notice or care. Where people used to argue their opinions, they now just block/downvote and move on because that person must be evil/nazi/fascist/troll/a russian bot and their mind cannot be changed.

How is that bullshit? People do like to give promotions to other people they like, sometimes irrelevant of talent. Look at literally all non-democratic governments.

And it’s no secret random conversations not about work happen a lot more in person. These are the kind of conversations that make friendships, not the 1 on 1 with your manager on teams.

This is why most sane companies don’t force you to do 4 days but instead make it so that if you only have to do 2 days at the office, they’re the same 2 days of the week for everyone to avoid the situation in this post.

If you’re getting spaghetti it’s a skill issue.

If you vibe code, sure you’ll get slop. Ask it to do something to get X result, you’re leaving it room to think so you get slop. Tell it exactly what logic you want it to use, step by step like it’s a child, then you get the same you’d do yourself but faster.

Look at the PRs for quality-critical projects like the linux kernel and I guarantee you coudn’t tell which PR has some AI and which does not.

When you spoon feed it the algorithm, it’s good, at least better than your average programmer. You just have to make sure it doesn’t have too much thinking to do. Honestly people in here really overestimate the talent of most dev.

There was a comment somewhere I really liked: people thought it would be one junior dev with AI replacing 10 senior ones. In reality, it’s one senior dev with AI replacing 10 junior vibe coders.
