All of these are just working people being toyed with by the rich for their entertainment and profit

unmagical@lemmy.ml · 135 pts · 22d (5 replies)

Dude literally watched Squid Game and said that shit would be better if it were real then set out and did it.

BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk · 22 pts · 22d (3 replies)

But for 5k a day.. Yeah, I'd waste three months of my life for that kind of money

mildseason@sopuli.xyz · 43 pts · 21d

Of course you would. I probably would too. It's life changing money. But the morality of these 'challenges' is extremely fucked. And $5k a day is pocket change to Mr Beast who makes $1.6 million a day 🤮

a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 21d

And this is brings us to our next point--we need to tax the shit out of them.

Auli@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 17d

Sure who wouldn't but it is still a rich asshole exploiting the poor for his entertainment and benefit.

merc@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 21d

I watched a video about it, and what's interesting to me is that he had an enormous budget for this Squid Game remake. He spent it on setting up hundreds of cameras, building a whole set where the game would take place, hired all kinds of camera operators... but didn't do even basic play-testing of the games he was going to have people play.

As a result, some challenges that were supposed to last for an hour or so ended up taking more than 12 hours. Some challenges that were supposed to eliminate half the contestants instead eliminated over 90%. Some challenges didn't work because people refused to eliminate their friends.

mkwt@lemmy.world · 43 pts · 22d (10 replies)

A 2.5 million private jet is, uh, probably not new.

The smallest Very Light Jets, like the Cessna Mustang or HondaJet, start around $5 million new.

So you're probably looking at a decades old plane, almost certainly not enough room to fully stand up, and possibly no lavatory.

minfapper@piefed.social · 24 pts · 22d

It could be a Cirrus Vision Jet.

Edit: holy shit they've gone up in price to $3.2M. Damn inflation hitting private jets too. Nobody's immune

JargonWagon@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 22d (3 replies)

Look at Mr. Fancy Pants over here who knows about private jets

Whostosay@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 22d (2 replies)

All of these are just working people being toyed with by the rich for their entertainment and profit

That's literally a description of society. Not just modern society, society throughout all of history. The rich and powerful have always toyed with the peasants.

These are just variations of game shows. Do X and you can win $/Prizes while they film it and play advertisements while people watch.

If Mr Beast was twenty years older, he would’ve been the one paying bums to fight.

Davel23@fedia.io · 47 pts · 22d (6 replies)

Hell, I'd pay to see flying bums.

blitzen@lemmy.ca · 28 pts · 22d (1 reply)

D’oh. I’ve edited it so now your comment doesn’t make sense. Flight -> fight.

Bum Flights: a show about trying to find among 100 unhoused people any of them who are capable of learning flight sims and eventually becoming pilots. Like crop duster level pilots realistically. Airline pilot certification is probably too far along to be entertaining.

Exploitative? Still probably exploitative. Guaranteed to be at least marginally better than whatever the Beast Studios people are making

This guy has half a dozen people locked up for "content". Is anyone else seeing how this is hugely problematic?

Hoimo@ani.social · 21 pts · 21d (4 replies)

Yes, in fact there's a whole genre of video essay where people explain how Mr Beast is problematic.

But to be fair, he's just an extension of the last 30 years of reality tv. Lure some desperate people with a large sum of cash, make them suffer in front of the camera, edit liberally, air for the entertainment of millions.

Additionally, one of the most popular tv shows of the decade is a criticism of exactly this phenomenon. Mr Beast did a whole tv series that tried to be Squid Game unironically, completely missing the moral of the story and spawning another round of criticism. Something something Guy Debord, something Jean Baudrillard something.

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 7 pts · 21d

At least Mr Beast is giving decent payouts... Meanwhile UK has stuff like get married to a stranger and pressured into having sex or just outright raped. There is no payout, all you seem to get is the wedding, a week holiday and a few weeks in an apartment block.

MrOtingocni@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d (2 replies)

Huh, a hyper-reality reference out in the wild.

Hoimo@ani.social · 4 pts · 21d (1 reply)

I never know which is which. I've read both The Society of the Spectacle and Simulacra and Simulation but I don't think I understood any of it, so a vague allusion is the best I can do. I understood a lot more of the 2016 documentary HyperNormalization, which is a synthesis of both? (I understood neither, so I'm just guessing there.)

MrOtingocni@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 21d

I think if you watched HyperNormalization you pretty much get the gist.

Alexstarfire@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 22d (22 replies)

If the people are doing it voluntarily, and the minor(s) have parental consent, I don't see the issue. I doubt they have no way to leave early.

Now, it may be problematic from a societal standpoint, that people want to do such a thing because they don't make enough money.

sploder@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 21d (5 replies)

Some dude who agreed to one of these extended challenges released a video exposing the behind the scenes abuse they do to get you to stay as long as possible so they get more content from you. Their whole investment of time and hype isn’t worth it if you leave after a few days like you’re tempted to. It was pretty disturbing, I believe it’s still on YouTube.

The only set ups that aren’t as abusive imo are the ones that can only last so long and are in public. I believe one was whoever keeps their hand on the car the longest wins the car. That one is pretty harmless with a decent pay off.

That's precisely the point of the proplem: he exploits misery and dreams of wealth in a society that by design creates misery and glorifies money.

Imagine someone neeeding the money to save an ill relative. Would you still call it"voluntarily"?

And all those kids who dream of getting rich by suffering on video, what kind of value is that promoting?

dev_null@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 22d

It would be pointless if they had no way to leave early. The entire premise is that they have to voluntarily endure the situation for the reward.

Back during the George Floyd protests I was watching a live stream from NYC. Several people in the comments were saying the store owners should shoot the protesters if they broke windows. I asked chat, "Do you really value property over human life?" No one said "no", and three explicitly responded "yes!" to me. I'll never forget that, I was a bit shocked.

JcbAzPx@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 21d

The funniest/saddest thing is hearing stories from niche youtubers that did one of his events talking about kids they meet finding out about it and immediately asking them for money. Just an instant switch from bored disinterest to excited begging.

titanicx@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 21d (7 replies)

Dude you obviously have not seen game shows from well forever the last 50 60 years at very least. Mr beast is just a continuation of those game shows. I for one had never really heard or watched him before beast games came out. And then I started saying more and more of his stuff. But it's always been a part of game show culture and everything else culture to value the game and the money over anything else. However even watching those games and even his games you'll see quite a few people that value other things over the money.

buddascrayon@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 21d (4 replies)

I was born in the '70s. I grew up on those game shows. They do not hold a candle to the brazen contempt for humanity that Mr Beast videos have.

titanicx@lemmy.zip · -2 pts · 21d (3 replies)

Huh. You must be watching something far different then what I've seen.

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 20d

The game shows we air on mainstream TV in Germany are so vanilla in comparison to that (essentially whos going to be a millionair).
And if we air things like Takeshis Castle, we usually import and dub over them. Usually they get the night time slot (22:00 - 05:00), usually on private channels. Prime time (20:15) is very rare for that beyond specialized channels.

Auli@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 17d (1 reply)

Game shows are tame. I mean fear factor being the exception that was a fucking disgusting show. But what can you expect with who was hosting it.

titanicx@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 17d

And doing this stuff that he does for these guys is pretty tame oh don't leave a plane for 24 hours oh don't leave a grocery store for 2 days you know different stuff like that I don't see anything that is out of the ordinary. They used to do the things all the time and I've even seen them live where it's like hey come touch this car and the last person standing gets it stuff like that where people are literally passing out and everything like that they've been doing that since like the you know 40s 50s 60s stuff like that none of this stuff is new is my point.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 20d (1 reply)

That it's "always been" doesn't make it any more acceptable. I'm not sure what you're saying here.

titanicx@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 20d

Simply that the take on them destroying society because they are taking a small handful of people and putting them in a competition isn't accurate at all.

Re: EDIT

Where the fuck?

REDACTED@infosec.pub · 4 pts · 21d

Northern Europe. Or East Europe depending on who you ask. Baltics.

EDIT: Just to elaborate with some exceptions: I ride an illegal Ebike, but police knows this and has pretty much made a verbal exception because I'm always respectful of others, don't break laws, don't speed, I've been riding it for a decade with multiple random stops and checks and explanations, etc. - always everything being good except for the voltage of my ebike, but I do live in a rural region where after I leave small city of 10k, I have to drive 7km to my home and I can't drive a car due to medical condition. They have always been understanding.

Another one is that each time I've had to call them, they genuinely showed real interest and all problems were promptly solved - flooding from neighbouring farm after they messed with dams, some jackasses using shitty rural roads as dragstrip (probably saved their lives), laptop theft

Being serious:

  • started as a YouTuber that did trend videos like "I did the latest trend, but did it BIGGER"
  • figured out a (very exploitative) formula for maximising viewer retention whilst getting as many sponsorship deals into a video as possible
  • Became the first YouTube Millionaire
  • Started amping up this formula by making the challenges shocking and attention grabbing, such as "I PUT 10 PEOPLE IN AN UNLOCKED HOTEL ROOM, LAST TO LEAVE GETS $5 MILLION"
  • realised he could wash his terrible reputation by occasionally releasing a charity video instead, kept it being exploitative though, his most famous example was "I CURED THE BLINDNESS OF 100 PEOPLE" (all blind because they had treatable, easily, diseases but American Healthcare is so exploitative they couldn't afford to get the treatment)
  • Managed to get a TV series called "Beast Games" that's this but TV

He's basically everything wrong with YouTube rolled into one person

Karmanopoly@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 21d (8 replies)

You didn't even mention his terrible chocolate and candy

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 21d (5 replies)

I barely know who Mr Beast is, I've NEVER seen one of his videos, but Publix had one of his candy bars on their Clearance Shelf (I love the Clearance Shelf), and it was really good chocolate, much more like European Chocolate. It was smoother without that vomity alkaline taste that American chocolate has, that we've all gotten used to.

It didn't turn me into a fan, but his chocolate bar was actually really good.

FlexibleToast@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 21d (3 replies)

It's definitely not really good and like European, but it is a step above Hershey. It sits somewhere in the middle. If you found it cheap it was probably a good value.

moopet@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 21d

I have only vague knowledge, but I think it's real. He's a twat that a huge number of kids look up to, who is essentially the end boss of capitalistic decay.

zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 21d

He's a wildly popular streamer guy that does wacky shit like this and it somehow translate to lots of views/money. I didn't know who he was for a very long time to many peoples' surprise. I was truly disappointed he didn't look like Beast from the X-men.

Rusty@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 21d

The only thing I know about him is that he is very good at Dune Imperium board game and he hosted multiple tournaments for it.

zarkanian@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 21d

Folding Ideas on YouTube has a very entertaining video about him.

The first thing i think about when I see this is npt Squid game but The ones who walk away from Omelas

diegantobass@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 22d

This.

fodor@lemmy.zip · 16 pts · 21d (1 reply)

Welcome to Omelas?

MrShankles@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d

Fuck... I had a thought that ended with that concept, just earlier today. My end-thought was kinda like, "would you walk away from Omelas with me?"

It was a day for me; but what a small (fucked up) world

I hate these people.

Digit@lemmy.wtf · 2 pts · 21d

I hate what they're doing.

Digit@lemmy.wtf · 11 pts · 21d

I presume that's just for his own "use".

A 2.5M jet's gonna cost so much in maintenance, if the pilot gets it, it's gonna ruin them :|

electric_nan@lemmy.ml · 13 pts · 21d

Uh if you can pilot that jet and own it outright, you have a whole-ass business. They'll be fine.

raze2012@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d (1 reply)

yeah, at that point you just gotta sell it off. Hell, sell it off half price and you still get life changing money.

ClanOfTheOcho@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d

He'll have to sell it to cover his federal income tax bill. Or more likely mortgage it if he's planning his own business around the aircraft.

peetabix@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 21d (6 replies)

Did Mr. Beast just use the words cop and criminal interchangeably? Or am I misunderstanding something.

white_nrdy@programming.dev · 18 pts · 21d (4 replies)

Probably means a cop and a criminal living in a shared cell.

Which I don't think is fair, that person is in a lot of physical danger of violence. What did that criminal do to deserve such treatment?

zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 10 pts · 21d (3 replies)

So possibly two cops living together in a jail?

white_nrdy@programming.dev · 8 pts · 21d (2 replies)

Potentially. The cop is definitely a criminal, however the other person might be a "criminal"

zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 21d (1 reply)

A solid clarification, thanks!

HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 21d

Glad we could have this circle jerk!

Digit@lemmy.wtf · 1 pts · 21d

I interpreted that as likely meaning a corrupt cop who'd been caught committing crimes.

Not that the ambiguity of that caught my attention more than the boy.

GoatSynagogue@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 21d (1 reply)

A criminal living in jail to win 500k? It’s not like he can leave…..

man_wtfhappenedtoyou@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 21d

Maybe he hasn't been caught yet

$2.5 m for a private jet seems really low

Probably a piece of shit

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 21d

It's low for a new jet, used jets lose a lot of their value over time and there are a lot of them. For 2.5m you're probably looking at a used business class jet, like a Lear 31, or a Hawker 800. Some sort of private plane that was owned and used by a corporation.

Used, most parts still attached

ddplf@szmer.info · 1 pts · 21d

Eh, that's a pretty standard price for an entry-level used jet.
