Really like the look. Except all the textures and little details on Young Link's hat (and outfit). For some reason that sticks out as overdoing it, and ends up kinda ugly.
But yeah, seems like a pretty direct remake. The visuals have evolved so much that it feels different while staying very close to the original. I love the addition of a sprint. A jump button doesn't feel necessary, but might be nice in practice. If you didn't already like OoT tho, I don't think this will change your mind.
Another change they mentioned was that the day/night cycle continues even in towns now. I actually don't like that. There was always that little bit of peace when I'd arrive in town before sunset. I don't love day cycles in general, in OoT and most games it's usually just annoying and worse looking at night.
I appreciate the detail that you can see where his fingers go as he plays the ocarina. Combined with them selling one (albeit probably a cheaply made poor quality instrument?), that's kinda cool.
Glad to see the price is mostly reasonable.

Glad I'm not the only one. I feel like they went overboard with the details on link.
Yeah, you have a new high fidelity system than can handle all those details. But... Should you? Looks way too extra.
Guitar@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2h
I actually like the little details on Link. It looks like the Kokiri made their clothes out of leaves from the forest. That's why there are veins in Link's hat. I think it makes more sense than a community of children in a forest being able to grow and weave cloth.
As far as day/night changes go, at least we will still have the Sun's Song to change it whenever we want. But you make a good point about being able to relax in towns at sunset. I never liked how it would cut the music though.

I am not sure what to think of the style they went with. I get some uncanny valley feeling from it? Parts of it look a bit off, other look good, but all of it look a bit out of place? Maybe I am just too used to the original.
slimerancher@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 15h
While I like the style, the uncanny valley vibe has been mentioned by many people, so it's not just you.
Hopefully it won't feel like that when actually playing.

Character faces look like 15th century Christian religious paintings. Possibly an intentional choice?
Overall I think it looks great, even if the faces are a bit weird

Not sure what to think.
It seems to capture the original aesthetic pretty well, except for the characters which look a bit plasticky (and hair look very low quality).
I still feel it's unnecessary, but that's how I feel about most remakes.
Also I expected it to be $50 like Star Fox, being a remake of an N64 game.
ladel@feddit.uk · 7 pts · 1d
I like how Zelda games often have a distinct art style between each other, but the plastic look is a bit offputting, although I'll probably get used to it. It's the way things that shouldn't shine do shine, and then the rain makes everything super shiny.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is already my favorite video game, so a remake wasn't something I really wanted honestly. The 3DS remake was fine, but I always preferred the N64 version. BUT after seeing this new game in action, I am sold. They got me. This looks phenomenal and I'm so thrilled. I only hope I can change the spoken dialogue to French like with BOTW and TOTK.

I see what you did there.

Heh.
ApollosArrow@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 18h
I feel like the style is caught in limbo trying to please too many crowds and feels like it’s lacking a bit of identity. I may think otherwise when playing it later.
avg@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 17h
Agreed, if someone said this was a fan made render, I'd believe it.

Well, I'm going to have to get a stupid Switch 2 for my wife now. (Not because she's bothering me to get this for her, but because I want to get this for her).
Tattorack@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 20h
Played Ocarina of Time like 90% of the way on 3DS. I wonder if this would be worth it for me.
slimerancher@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18h
I played about half of it recently. Last year I think. Looking forward to the remake.
Everyone is different though, so you have to decide if it's worth it for you or not.
tamlyn@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 22h
I haven't played Ocariana of Time yet. I have never played a 3D Zelda if i think about it, but every single Top-Down Zelda, even the multiplayer. So was never in the mood to play a 3D Zelda, in some cases like botw i don't even think to like the game. But i could have fun with a Ocarina of Time game. But this remake isn't that convincing for me to pick it up. I mean i could have played this game for years already, but the new ones artstyle is sometimes good and some part are kind ugly. So doesn't convice me that much...
slimerancher@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18h
It sounds like 3D Zelda just aren't for you, but if you want to try one, this is now the most modern way to play older (non-BOTW) style 3D Zelda game.
tamlyn@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 11h
I don't know if it's not for me. Part of the story is, that i didn't own a Nintendo home console since the snes i played a link to the past on. It's still a maybe if i pick it up or not.
slimerancher@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9h
Just wait for the reviews and decide. It's not going anywhere.
shweddy@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
Yup 3ds version was my final buy.
victorz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
$93.8 where I live. RIP
Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 1d
This looks bad.
victorz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
Why do you say that?
Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · 8 pts · 1d
The smooth plasticy texture on most surfaces, esp in the rain.
victorz@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d
Does it look worse than the original to you?
Calfpupa@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 1d
This specific thing? Yes.
victorz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d
Huh. Interesting.
THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d
People are always going to be like this. Remake the highest rated game of all time faithfully with modern, but still stylized visuals. "Huh, looks bad."
Never gonna get everyone. Especially not here.
victorz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
Very true. I think this looks amazing. Shelled out $90+ just now for a pre-order. Gonna be great.
sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1d
This is a fair assessment, I thought the same thing when the Link's Awakening remake came out in their new 2.5d engine. I'm wondering how the eventual Majora's Mask remake is going to look.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d
Looks great. Going to pre-purchase.
samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 2h
I was hoping they'd go in a FF7 Remake direction with it. Ah well. Amazon's selling it for $60 physical, so I'm willing to get it for that.
neo2478@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1d
I look forward to eventually playing this in an emulator
chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 3h
Why bother? The PC port Ship of Harkinian of the N64 version will likely be a much better experience and it's available now. Including Majora's Mask.
neo2478@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 3h
Because I had never heard of it! This looks legit!!
chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 2h
It's great. I played it on my Steam Deck a few years ago and it was a great experience.
bruhbeans@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 18h
I'm not buying a switch 2 and I'm not buying yet another fucking Nintendo remake, least of all at full price. lmk when it hits the emu scene, meanwhile I'm playing the Dusk TP decompile
