That sounds like shit; thanks Apple.
xenomor@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 10h
Didn’t watch the presentation. Should I assume that anyone wearing an apple watch from now on is recording my audio without consent?
h0tbeef@lemmy.zip · 14 pts · 10h
That’s what I’ll be assuming
I wonder how this will be legally interpreted in states with two-party-consent recording laws
Dave@lemmy.nz · 17 pts · 10h
Hell, what about 1 party consent where the person doesn't know their watch is recording?
h0tbeef@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 10h
Excellent point, lmao
Brkdncr@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 9h
I think it’s doing on-device summarization. No transcript is retained or sent off.
kingofras@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5h
This is the correct comment. But the one with the assumption is voted higher. Lemmy loving vibes more than facts, day 1,436.
Yes, the audio is never stored, the summaries can be completely turned off, and yes, Apple again is caught inside its own bubble being ever more disconnected from the outside silicon valley life. They should not have touted this so strongly and loudly.
People will these devices are being kidnapped daily and forced to open their devices. Even without the audio some of these transcripts can be used as evidence against them or their families, violating their 5th amendment rights.
Rothe@piefed.social · 2 pts · 2h
You don't have the facts either though. You are just assuming whatever Apple says is the truth.
kingofras@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1h
Apple says stuff about Apple product. How is that not a fact?
They said that. They have very little incentive to lie.
derAbsender@piefed.social · 1 pts · 1h
They have the only incentive that matters to lie: Profit.
If they would admit that the Data is send to Servers and or saved, there would be backlash hurting their bottom line.
And they should record and save everything to collect and sell the Data, aiding their bottom line.

Let me tell you about apples "stringent" privacy. It means they will hesitate a second before giving the administration anything they ask.
setsubyou@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6h
Nothing changed in that regard. It doesn’t record audio, sound recognition runs on device. In the exact same way that all modern Apple devices (watches, phones, earbuds, …) can already listen for Hey Siri, and other brands listen for their wake words etc.
blitzen@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 10h
I think it will be functionally different than “recording”. When you talk to Siri or any other voice assistant, does it record your voice or simply transcribe it? This seems to be the latter.
AA5B@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2h
And Apple has always made a point of saying things like this are on-device, not cloud
AA5B@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 2h
I believe Apple Watch already ships with always on Siri, but I don’t know anyone who left that turned on.
ech@lemmy.ca · 23 pts · 8h
This is the same shit companies do with their "year in review" shit - a blatant attempt to glamorize and normalize their invasive surveillance, now running 24/7.
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 11h
Not my day.
TachyonTele_Esq@piefed.social · 7 pts · 11h
Oh don't worry. All the other apple watches around you will do it just fine with your shadow account.
NOT_RICK@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 11h
Sounds to be local to the device at least… for now.
Sanctus@anarchist.nexus · 12 pts · 11h
I want to hear the summary after just gooning all day
wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 10h
"chat, get this guy a gf, please"
stoy@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 8h
No it wont, I won't buy it.
jtrek@startrek.website · 10 pts · 10h
I absolutely do not need this. Journaling is healthy. Take that up instead
AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social · 4 pts · 7h
Exactly. People love convenience until it removes the only actual benefits of the thing it's replacing, but by then they're dependent on it.
If it listens to things for you so you can look at them 10 seconds later when you realize you didn't hear, why should your brain even bother paying attention to ANYTHING in the moment? If it summarizes your day, how much less are you going to remember because you're just not forcing your brain to think about what you've done today?
I know for a fact I've gotten much better at remembering things that happen throughout my day after I started taking a note every day with what I did. If I had something recording it all for me, I'd just become even more reliant on that thing to even remember what happened at all.
mrmaplebar@fedia.io · 9 pts · 8h
The new Apple Watch will track your every move.
halfapage@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 7h
oh hey time to stop speaking unless absolutely necessary
how do we revert omnipresence of mics, cameras and other sensors
Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3h
We don't. But thankfully we don't have data brokers that can assemble all of it and make pretty little profiles of us all. That's why they need another 1500 data centers per year.
zikzak025@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3h
Turns out the monsters in A Quiet Place should have been real-world surveillance networks all along.
xenomor@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 10h
Also, is that what apple watches still look like? Eleven years and these visionless assholes can’t meaningfully evolve the industrial design of this fucking nag box?
TeXniker@mathstodon.xyz · 2 pts · 3h
@xenomor
What vision? It’s a wrist watch (with extras), so it should look like one.
For the record: I hate wrist watches.
AA5B@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2h
Are you complaining about the hardware or the face?
xenomor@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1h
Apple: ‘melted lozenge’ is the platonic ideal for watches
nunzilla@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 8h
We're so cooked
Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 3h
Oh no it won't.
Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 1h
People wearing glasses with thick rims will get sick of showing people that there's no camera and start buying new glasses.
Apple Watch users will stop wearing their watches in public. And finally giving up wearing one altogether.
desmosthenes@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3h
nope

EU: "Brought enough for everyone?"
Apple: "Forget I said anything."

If I can’t turn it off, I don’t want it.
charokol@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 2h
“You looked at your phone for about 12 hours”. Thanks Apple
Quexotic@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 1m
That's interesting. I don't see how it can generate recaps of my day if I don't ever purchase it.
