I finished/customized a pair of shoes.

I went shopping for shoes with my daughter and we found this pair of pink tennis shoes. Nothing expensive, just something she can break in with no real concern as she is still growing fast.

(I'm getting old...)

So we brought this pair home and after giving it a closer look, I thought if I could fit something to reinforce the shoe laces holes it might make the shoes easier to tie and maybe prevent the material to tear so easily.

I had to dig around a bit to find those "eyes" or whatever they are called. I dislike gold color with all my heart but it was all I had; we talked a bit and my daughter liked the idea and the color.

The pliers to apply those were already in my scrap bucket, covered in rust spots. Fished it out along with the hole puncher and went to work.

Fifteen minutes later the work was done and the shoes just looked... better. And my daughter was happy.

Awesome work.

Now she can try a different lacing pattern!

That is a wonderful website to know about. Thank you!

Fieggen's shoelace site is a treasure

I've been promoting it for ages. I love Ian's site.

those "eyes" or whatever they are called

I believe "grommet" is the correct term.

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 2d

And you are, according to this page, very much correct.

And accordingly with the same article, when applied to shoes, it can be called an eyelet.

I'll probably forget it by tomorrow morning but it is good to know.

Isn't that a Sesame Street character?

Davel23@fedia.io · 3 pts · 2d

Not that I'm aware of, but there is the famous claymation duo from the UK, Wallace and Gromit. Slightly different spelling.

verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 2d

If not, it should be.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

They are eyelets. Grommets are bigger and are generally found on traps or other canvas items. It's a stupid distinction.

They look better! Now to keep them clean and white, you're gonna need some sneakerheads to help you with that. I myself walk around in dusty, grimy sneaks.

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 6 pts · 2d (2 replies)

If I know my daughter well enough, the sneakers will get very dirty, very quickly.

verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

A rugged life, full of adventure! Mine is full of chickens. There's no chance for the sneaks, but chickens are more fun.

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 2d

I agree. I miss having chickens. Fun little creatures to have around.

I can knot keep white shoes clean myself. It's not the sole white thing I can't keep white either.

You need Jesus. 🙎‍♀️ 🎭

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 3 pts · 2d (3 replies)

I find that comment just laced with vitriol, I need jesus my left foot. I do not toe the religious line.

idiomaddict@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

But do you speak in tongues?

verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

No vitriol intended at all. It was intended as a jesting reply about the puns you used in your previous comment. I included the "comedy/tragedy masks" emoji to make it clearer that my reply was in jest and appreciation for a good pun.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 1d

It was just an excuse to use more puns on my part, I ran out of shoe words so used some foot related ones. I am under the gun to come up with some more here as another just punned me back. I can't think of a way to work grommel in there and that's about the last shoe word I know.

pair of pink tennis shoes

Those are white, aren't they?
The grommet work is professional looking; nice job!

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 2d (4 replies)

Light pink. The photograph is just lousy.

Gotcha. I thought my phone screen was messed up again lol
Pink tennis shoes with golden grommets would look amazing, so even though you despise gold, this is going to look very nice!

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Maybe this one is bit better.

I think your phone sees the light pink and over corrects the white balance. The sticker on the cable splitter on the bottom left is cyan, but should be white.
I undid the overzealous white balance lol

Those are actually really nice shoes and look super comfortable

If they manage to last more than 4 weeks, it will be a win.

Grommet?

Good work.

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 2d

Yes. And when on shoes it can also be called an eyelet. Discovered it last night when another person told me what it was called.

And thank you.
