You'd be hard pressed to find any distro that doesn't have LibreOffice in its repos, as easy to install as any other software in the distro. Hell, most of the distros I work with have it installed by default when you first install the distro.
Have there been any significant advances in word processor UX since then? No, these days the computer industry is more interested in ripping people off than making useful software.
