Name them after the oil execs. “In tonight’s new the death toll climbs to 11,000 in the Darren Woods heat event…”

I urge everyone to go to the MET website and cast v their votes

I would worry it would make some of them weirdly proud and they would hope for the hi-score.

We'd run out of them rather quickly.

We'd need some kind of name variant system, hopefully more interesting than 'Saudi Aramco the 147th'.

Sunflier@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1d

We’d run out of them rather quickly.

We could also add on the CEOs, the companies, the co-conspirators, the lobbying groups, the politicians, etc.

testaccount372920@piefed.zip · 12 pts · 1d

It's fine to run out I think. When someone talks about the Shell or BP heatwave and someone else needs ask which one, it gets the point across even more that these companies are responsible.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3h

Could also use their pre-merger names, from when our environment was being destroyed by more than a handful of global mega-corps. Tropical storm Exxon AND hurricane Mobil

what a great idea

ceenote@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 1d (1 reply)

If we're talking about society-wide paradigm shifts, may I suggest we try putting executives in prison first?

hanrahan@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 1d

or voting Green in most countries eg Australia, NZ, Germany, UK, Canada for example to move the overton window and get systemic policy change

rayyy@piefed.social · 18 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Also, name the great depressions/recessions after the one most responsible - The great trump depression.

Broadfern@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d

Not a bad idea. In the 1st Great Depression the homeless tents/settlements were called “Hoovervilles.”

modus@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 20h (2 replies)

If I own a toxic waste dump site, am I allowed to name it the Trump Dump? I'm not using the name from his "Brand," but I'm naming it after a US president. Or is his side hustle going to send me a cease and desist letter?

AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 4h (1 reply)

Regardless of the legality of it, he's 100% going to take you to court and try to bury you in legal fees. One of the few things dude can actually manage to do is weaponize the legal system.

I've been in a great Trump depression for a long, long time now...

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 3h

A bit like how destitute improvised slums were called Hoovervilles?

Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Or be more accurate and blame Shell and BP for your problems

pelespirit@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 1d

I think we'll be able to go through them all, unfortunately.

Region: Earth

gigaqps@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

You'd think so, but the grandparent argues that it would be more accurate for Europeans to blame European Shell and BP for their heatwaves, rather than American Chevron.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3h

Do they not understand that greenhouse gas emissions spread out through the entire atmosphere?

erusuoyera@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 1d (1 reply)

We could name all extreme weather events after them. Hurricane Exxon, Cyclone Aramco, Storm BP.

DakRalter@thelemmy.club · 1 pts · 1d

We did this on Mastodon! Met office or something put out a form to submit names for a storm or summat and someone recommended suggesting names like Aramco and BP and a bunch of us did it. I don't know if it got traction elsewhere, I live under a rock.

mohammed_alibi@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d

Need a alphabetical list of names like hurricanes.

Amoco BP Chevron ...

crystalmathadept@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 1d (2 replies)

We used to. Remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill? The BP oil disaster in the gulf.

FlexibleToast@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Those weren't climate events. Those were directly tied to the company.

crystalmathadept@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 5h

Fair point.

myyass@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

H-h-h-h-h-HOLY SHIT. Sorry had to use a Unreal Tournament quote because that's insane.

Problem is singling any one of them out is grounds for defamation.

then_three_more@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d

I've seen the idea before. You don't single one out, you do though the alphabet like they do with storm names. There's plenty of companies to choose from at each letter so you can do different ones different years.

gigaqps@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

I'm sure we'll have plenty of devastating heatwaves to go around

testaccount372920@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Is it defamation if it's true? In a podcast about serial killers, it isn't considered defamation either if an episode is about one specific serial killer, right?

then_three_more@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

It would be fun to see them take it to court and the judge rule against them. Assuming it wasn't done American judge they'd bought of course.

kgbbot@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 2h

I would go one step further and make sure to Chevron Heat wave sponsored by ExxonMobil
