I think you could save this one still. People knew his name before he was elected leader because he was imprisoned by his racist government. That's not really a good thing.

The only leader I know that openly confronted consumerism and considered it a priority, as well as the concept of infinite economic growth. He even criticized latin american left parties for having turned poor people into consumers, and not into citizens (as in people with rights)
He admired and supported Chavez, who was the one who started the destruction of my country, left Maduro here and dismantled all the industry and national trade, and the state’s companies put them in charge of inept people just because they were loyal to him.
I wouldn't say he was good if he supported such a character.
As far as loyalty is concerned, I think having your president kidnapped and his replacement give us the rights to your oil for 100 years while our deranged leader tells the UN general assembly its ours by right of conquest kinda shows the importance of making sure everyone at high levels is loyal.
The US sanctions where another factor, yes, but not the biggest one. The biggest one was his bad administration. He did the same errors than his predecessors, even when he said that he was going to repair those errors, and he did these errors multiplied by ten.
Even worst, he instaurated an institutionalized corruption mechanism, with a lot of nepotism, despotism, resources and money diversion and tunneling, etc.
Also, take into account that some of the worst effects of his government preceded the US sanctions on Venezuela, that only made everything worst because he simply stealed harder from the citizens to be able to survive.
Also he horribly managed our economy, depending excessively on oil and when the 2008 crisis started he didn't had a second plan and even worse, had a lot of unnecessary expenses.

I've never heard Jacinda Ardern mentioned until now. And Barack Obama was the first black POTUS (and also ridiculed by some because of that). Xi Jinping is probably the best example.

Our leader in the U.S. is a perfect reflection of our conservatives. If you know his qualities, you know the qualities of our conservatives. If you know conservatives, it's pretty obvious there is no peaceful way out of our situation.
