I just had the picture of Guybrush sitting at the fire with the two pirates from Monkey Island 2 in my mind, where he says "Have I told you the story when I made that meme back then?"
Iirc no ship could leave the Island until they verified Napoleon was on the land (not hiding on the ship). So he would hide on the Island so the ship couldn't leave.
