I am getting some good vibes from the sopuli.xyz instance over the last months. Also some good quality memes. Why is that so?
As an instance admin, I have to admit that I have no idea. I made clear rules to follow, appointed enough moderators for communities and made sure that any content against the rules gets removed. And of course made sure that this instance's performance is at a good level. I do my job. One reason could be that as a smaller instance, Sopuli stays out of any big drama that has been going on with the biggest Lemmy instances.
But otherwise, I'd like to hear how the users answer this question.
Okay, I say that is a lot more concise definition for what you're aiming for. When a website declares to be for "free speech", it carries a certain connotation these days. Look what Twitter has become after it got bought by Elon Musk and turned into a "free speech website" for example. And good that a line has been drawn so that bigotry isn't allowed.
It was about the database having corrupted data, and the best option turned out to restore from an earlier backup. Luckily the database is backed up automatically twice a day.
Regarding the decision, it's quite a stretch to claim @supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz being a Nazi. The idea was criticism towards Israel, and apparently it got misinterpreted as antisemitism.
Looks like I have to explain what's the reasoning behind the rule 3. I didn't want to make a long list of exact kind of behaviors and organizations that are not allowed on Sopuli and clutter the sidebar. Instead I listed several known bad movements so that the users could get a good picture of what kinds of people are not wanted here. Nazis, incels and QAnon, they all share a really warped and hostile view of the world that is black-and-white, and violence has been associated with all of them. And "similar whackos" can be found by looking at what the ADL and CDDH for example list as hate groups.
I don't think I use the word "Nazi" in a too broad sense like on Lemmygrad or Hexbear. In those places a Nazi can be anyone supporting Ukraine or a social democrat for example.
I could understand hardcoded blacklists if Tesseract was meant as a frontend for a Lemmy instance tailored for a specific purpose, and not intended for general use. But this, to DDOS a website because the developer is a whiny baby who can't take criticism? This is a new low. This is disgusting, and damaging for the Lemmyverse as whole.
I once went on a date with a Russian girl. Later I found her Pinterest profile that featured, among other things, pictures of Russian soldiers trampling on Pride flags, Elon Musk and Andrew Tate. Later I stumbled onto her Tinder profile where the description read "PS. I'm a fan of Andrew Tate".
So I didn't only dodge a bullet, but a whole clip.
These news make me want to ask her "well, what do you think of Andrew Tate now?"

A frontend should be a frontend. The decisions of what to blacklist should be up to the frontend's user. Stupid decision on the developer's part.
