Well, I'm below the definition of the the wealthiest 10%, but I'll also point out that the emissions rates continue to curve up dramatically the further you go up that 10%. So while a suburban contractor will need to change their life style in a degrowth system, it's not the same dramatic change as a CEO.

I agree.

Another way that I like to describe this is that almost nothing could make the earth less hospitable than the moon or mars already are. Asteroid strike? Mars' thin atmosphere is even more vulnerable. Climate change? The moon swings between -170C and 119 C each month. Nuclear war? Try living under constant cosmic radiation in a pressurized habitat that could be completely destroyed by a few small conventional explosives instead of a nuclear bomb.

If we had the ability to make a self sustaining colony on mars we'd be able to restore earth's biosphere or make self sustaining arcologies or bunkers.

The Artemis 2 flyby of the moon was really cool. But the photos of the moon really reminded me how absurd it is that a dozen obscenely wealthy bastards are pushing us to live and work in a deadly airless ugly desert instead of preserving the miraculous little oasis in space that we already have.

Yes this was the point of the meme. I feel like dying in an airplane, but it is very unlikely that anything fatal will happen. I also feel like dying while driving through suburban traffic, and there the odds are much higher something could take me out.

I love biking! Hence the low desire to die. I feel so much better all day after biking.

I am also biking in Kansas City Missouri though where drivers will directly threaten to kill me.

A little detail I liked was Tarima specifying something about destroying her father's auditory cortex. It answered the question of why a telepathic species would need sign language. In humans, even when we imagine voices or use an internal voice it goes through the auditory. So, it makes sense that a telepathic species might use it's auditory context to "hear" thoughts.

Are these people even watching the show? (probably deliberately disingenuous)

Ake sits up and also wears shoes when things are serious. It a consistent visual cue. I'd be as mad as they were if cadets were dying and she were laying back in the chair just shrugging it off, but that's not at all what is happening. Part of her character is that she is serious only to the extent the situation requires, and I think that casual attitude makes sense for someone who has been around for hundred's of years.
