Fox News host Sean Hannity dedicated a segment of his Thursday show to deliver a message to Pope Leo XIV, suggesting he and others at the Vatican had totally lost sight of the true meaning of the bible and its teachings.

Its because its not news. They have the title of news outlet. However they are a conservative commentary channel, and they don't consider facts, neutrality or decour.
Even they have admitted that they are not news: "In 2020, Fox News successfully defended a defamation lawsuit involving Tucker Carlson by arguing that his program was primarily entertainment rather than factual reporting"

Ex-cultist here. Specifically, fundamentalist Christian in the US.
So what we're seeing here is a division between in-groups and out-groups, and drawing that circle closer as a means of guarding against valid criticism. Consider; the standard response of most cults when they are under attack is to double down on its assertions that it is telling the truth. Most cults are built with a persecution complex as key part of exploiting their believers.
This tactic triggers their emotional response to rally to the defense of their cause, because "We're under attack! We're being hunted! The Worst Thing Possible is going to happen, and it is THIS PERSECUTOR'S fault!" This also forces a false choice in members who are doubting the leadership, forcing them to either cut all social ties and side with the enemy (they are trained to see this as a fate worse than death) or rehearse their dogma and rally without question.

Catholics are not real "Christians". So they dont believe in the Pope's position or respect the Pope.
I cannot fathom telling a guy who has dedicated his life to the church though that he doesn't understand the bible. Then again that is the republican MO, if you think you know better than an expert clearly you do.
Nikelui@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 126d
I'm going to be pedantic, but it's the exact opposite of what you wrote. Catholics are a branch of Christians, who give more importance to the role of saints and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, among other differences.
So you should actually argue that they are not really Catholics, if they don't recognize the authority of the Pope.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 20 pts · 126d
I had to read their comment a few times, but I think when they said "they," they were referring to people like Hannity.
Like "according to people like Hannity, Catholics are not real Christians. Therefore, people like Hannity don't believe in the Pope's position or respect the Pope"
Definitely a strange way to word it.
Mulligrubs@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 124d
Catholics aren't a "branch" of Christians, they are the tree itself. The first church, they dominated for many centuries, and still do, as this discourse proves; the Pope and church remain very influential

freeman@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 124d
Being the largest denomination does not mean they shaped all Christianity. In fact Christianity was shaped before the Catholics split, in the middle east and Asia Minor with Rome being a fringe player.
Their later innovations were mostly left unadopted by the other half of the church and also caused a new split resulting in major intra-Christian religious wars. In fact since Catholics are merely a plurality and not a majority most Christians reject, frankly an understatement, the defining characteristic of Catholicism, papal infallibility.

Agreed.
I mean, it's my favorite book of the Bible. But it's the most easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. The whole thing is an allegory written in a particular kind of prose, drawing on tropes common to a genre of writing scholars call "apocalypse." But given that even lifelong Christians are unaware of this fact means that this is definitely not the book to recommend reading as an entry point. Unless you're looking for inspiration for something to airbrush on the side of your bitchin' van (hopefully one with a crescent moon bubble window on the back). Then by all means flip to the section right before the maps and get to sketching!
NoTagBacks@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 125d
ABSOLUTELY. I love the book of Revelation, but too many don't understand how to read apocalyptic literature, nor do they understand the source material to contextualize the heavy symbolism. I blame a ton of the dumbshit premillenial dispensationalism crudely hobbled together to resemble a form of eschatology on a poor understanding of Revelation, Dallas Theological Seminary for spreading the fuck out of it, and Schofield for being the dipass to keep it from remaining the obscure hallucinogenic ramblings of a (probably) sick pentecostal woman in England. Man there are so many cool things about the theology of hope and some strong influences of Stoic philosophy(again), but man does American theology love to fetishize about the unbelievers facing a gruesome divine genocide...

There's a name for catholics who believe that the pope isn't always right.
They are called protestants.
Catholicism only has one firm rule: The pope is always right, without exception. There's nothing wrong with criticizing the pope. Just don't call yourself a catholic if you do.
Tiresia@slrpnk.net · 31 pts · 126d
A friend of mine studied theology and said (when I remarked something similar) that that's a very Protestant perspective.
Catholicism has had a long history of people disagreeing with the pope. There have been antipopes, wars between Catholics and the Papal State, theological factions where the Pope is just one participant, etc. . Papal infallibility is a very recent doctrine, and it only applies when he is speaking ex cathedra, which is rarely. Many Catholics don't adhere to it, and many only consider it a matter of worldly convenience against schisms.
That said, there are no AI generated images of Trump wearing Papal vestments or overseeing the holy mass. Trump is not presented as an anti-Pope, but as an anti-Christ.

And since the dogma of infallibility was proclaimed close to 200 years ago, there have only been two instances it has been invoked.
Diddlydee@feddit.uk · 7 pts · 126d
That's not really true at all though. The pope isn't always right, without exception. He's only infallible on matters of faith or morals, and on doctrine which is stated as being the view of the church and which invokes his supreme authority. Popes are capable of being wrong, making mistakes, or sinning.
Simulation6@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 126d

RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 126d
I’m sorry, but this is BS.
The Church is run by people and people are fallible.
Bishops sign their names with an upside down cross to remind themselves that they are sinners who make mistakes.
A shocking number of saints are people martyred for standing up to the Church when it had become corrupt.
It’s a Catholic’s duty to stand for what is right.

Objection@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 125d
Hannity doesn't call himself Catholic, and that's also not exactly true.
As an ex-Catholic: Catholics only have to accept things that the Pope says ex cathedra, which means he has to make a formal, official statement speaking for the Church, not just expressing his personal views. You can also criticize the Pope's behavior, the Pope is still a sinner like everyone else, only Jesus is without sin. That's how Catholics deal with all those mideval popes having gay harems and stuff, and it's also how they deal with all the times the Church was wrong, like claiming that the sun revolved around the earth.
Infallibility has to be limited in scope or it wouldn't be possible to weasel out of things.

Also where I am there's is non-0 number of Christians who legitimately believe we/someone needs to rebuild ancient buildings in the middle east so Jesus can return.
It's a death cult that believes money is proof that God approves of you. While simultaneously believing unending war/genocide in the middle east is a necessary evil. So they can just shrug their shoulders while people are slaughtered and say "God works in mysterious ways!"

If you think that rational people would see through all that you're right, but their followers arent. They've been trained for over forty years to be led by the nose by their media peer group. Be it conservative news or Facebook posts or green text or their local evangelical demigogue, whatever it is they will be told what they want to hear. Trump is right, and by extention they are right too. And to question it is to put at risk all the relationships they've built up over their lifetime. To be wrong is too risky, so they simply arent. As an American raised by evangelical nationalists, I always knew it would go down like this. There’s enough tolerance to function in day to day life but the behind closed doors contempt and downright hate, not for the theology or the scandals that come up, but the plain hate for people being different was instilled almost daily. They’d accept a kindness from a Catholic or Mormon neighbor, smile to their face, then talk shit as soon as they left. The entitlement and sense of superiority while simultaneously being victims is phenomenal. The more they realize they don’t need to rely on a broad idea of “Christianity” to further their agenda the more they’ll turn on every sect that doesn’t fit their idea of “Christianity”. I hope the Mormons are taking notes about the cost of hitching wagons with the evangelicals, cus they really hate you guys.

There’s a special kind of superiority for evangelicals like the people who raised me. There’s the hatred of racism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia- those are often easy to identify at first glance or figure out quickly. They want their white Christian America, and a substantial percentage of Mormons and Catholics are white and “Christian enough” when they need voter and public support. I think Catholics and Mormons have forgotten that the people they’ve been breaking bread with are the descendants of the people who terrorized the Irish and Italian immigrants and ran the Mormons out of New York, the Missouri, and tried to run them out of Idaho. Given time they’d probably turn on each other over Lutherans vs Baptists. They don’t actually want broad white evangelical supremacy, they want themselves alone to be supreme and to be able to tread on anyone else to have their way. They’ll always find an excuse to justify their personal “betterness”, but in fact are just empowering the oligarch class who will always reap the benefits of being above the law.

I thought the Mormons got run out of New York and Missouri because they were angry at all the cons that Joseph Smith was running at the expense of the local populace.
backalleycoyote@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 124d
That does tend to be the source of most religious disputes- your salvation grift is cutting into our salvation grift, your cult is getting more popular than our cult, your influence could be a threat to local politics. Mormonism wasn’t rebuked by a woke mob of atheists sick of conmen, advocating science, and opposed to a new version of the old patriarchy, it was rebuked by a mob of other Christians who thought their Christianity was better. They joined forces out of bigotry, jealousy, greed, and xenophobia. Smith was a charlatan in Jesus’ name, he was just a more successful one than his rivals and that pissed then off.

I wonder if gaslighting religion is going to work on the MAGA base, they have to go against what they were taught their whole life now, a really test of the cult loyalty.
FrChazzz@lemmus.org · 19 pts · 125d
Well, I'd argue that most of MAGA is evangelical, who tend to view Catholicism as either "fake Christianity" or a kind of quaint remnant of an older time that Protestantism fixed (and evangelicalism perfected). So most of them are already on board with the idea that the Pope is bad.
NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 125d
MAGA is itself a religion. They are Christian because it gives them an excuse to treat women and dark skinned people badly, not because they believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
If they have to choose, MAGA aligns with their beliefs more than a segment of Christianity that many Evangelicals already dislike.
TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 125d
A lot of people don't realise that ideology replaced religion as the source of mass movements. Ever since the rise of liberal individualism and scientific revolution, the role of religion diminished as the glue for community and source of knowledge. This is what Friedrich Nietzsche meant by "God is dead". It is not a coincidence that political movements centred on the mass mobilisation, namely socialism, communism and fascism, have sprung up around the same time.
Unfortunately, we are seeing the same thing unfolding again in our lifetime. The rise of neoliberalism, when Margaret Thatcher declared "there is no society, only individuals", is what initiated the death of community and social cohesion in recent memory. This led to plenty of lonely individuals who are easy preys for the far-right, as was the case before in Germany and Italy.
Mulligrubs@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 124d
Catholicism has diminished since The Black Death, liberal individualism and the scientific revolution would have never occurred if the Catholics still owned Europe.
The plague revealed the powerlessness of the faith; in the beginning, Catholics ruled Europe and controlled people from birth to death. After, they never recovered the same authority for obvious reasons.

They were hitting it HARD during the Biden administration, but the media wasn't covering it, of course. They quieted it down a bit when he got re-elected, but now that things are going even worse than predicted, they are ramping up the religious rhetoric again - "You better not mess with Trump, he knows Jesus and God personally."

It has nothing to do with "caring for the poor" and "taking in strangers".
