Nah. I hadn't even heard of it till I saw this post, and I've been using Lemmy daily for the last 2 years so whatever it is, I don't think it has a widespread reach. Giving people space to be weird online, whatever that means to them, is a big part of what made Reddit successful - there's a million subreddits I've never heard of it seen. I'm sure many of them would disgust me, but I think it's still important that they exist. Same goes for lemmy, over moderation/policing does more to harm the community IMO.
I think we need SI metrics for the duration of different dashes when spoken out loud, so we can use the em dash accurately in speech. Quick, someone call a nerd
I sorta hear where you're coming from but I think for most people, someone getting out there and shooting someone is a million times more ballsy and proactive than we'll ever be. Agreed that it was misguided/naive though. I think it's hard to know what will actually bring about the much needed change.
Counterpoint from my personal opinion: instance doesn't matter, don't assume people have certain views based on that, try to avoid stereotyping or being a dick to anyone, spread acceptance and love to everyone and if someone's a dick to you just block them or ignore and move on.
As with Reddit, the strength is in niche communities, and while Lemmy is still obviously way smaller, there are still some great niche communities here if you look for them - just try not to be put off if it turns out to be basically just one person keeping a community alive by posting regularly.
