it always surprises me how little cat there is under that fur

in all honestly, i'm not even sure how much could be done about it design-wise, i'd have to think about it. i think a large part of it is the nature of the fediverse itself. everyone will have a different client for interacting with content. all these fediverse platforms take design queues from big social media, which were designed for scaling.. but that's kind of what activitypub itself is meant for too.

so, i think a lot of the responsibility falls on me who made this community to adapt to the way things are. if the threadiverse were larger, maybe users would congregate into communities more. but for now it's in this in-between state of being larger than a web forum, but significantly smaller than social media, and as a result, the whole threadiverse space is a lot more of a singular monolithic community, with the c/ "communities" being more of a suggestion than a rule. leaning into piefed as something more akin to hackernews than reddit i think is the way for me to go.

i think fedi has similar pitfalls to social media, namely the parasocial thing. just look at the design of lemmy and piefed, the title and text content is maximized and the poster's name and profile, and the community itself is minimized. on web forums the user's identity is much more prominent with a large avatar, long signatures on every post, and often times badges, awards, and titles displayed under their name.

unpopular opinion, but i don't like these kinds of memes. reality sucked then and drove all the outcasts to the internet, and it sucks worse now. but now, on the internet you have this corporate dystopia to deal with on top of it.

escapes come at a premium these days, but the internet is still your best bet, you just need to work overtime to actually find the right places to go.
