I picked up Pikmin (Gamecube) when my first child was an infant, so my parenting skills were always intertwined with those little idiots.

A lot of people are understandably focused on how little range you’ll get from even an all-day session out in the sun, but there’s a cost angle, too. If you can’t charge at home, then relying on public chargers can be pricey. Those near me charge anywhere from $.35 to $.99 per kWh (US). With 1100w capacity under ideal conditions, I think around 2kWh per day in Canada. That’s maybe 8 miles per day of range for the most efficient Tesla Model 3, but $1 to $2 per day of charging replaced. At that system cost, assuming daily charging, payback is in 6.8 years, in a best-case scenario.

I built a small 1.8 kWh (4 panels) system that takes up a patio shade structure, with a 5 kWh battery as a buffer, but that could be cut down to make the cost lower. With similar panels going for as low as $82 US as I type this, plus inverter and battery cost, you could build a small fixed system that pays for itself in as little as a year or two.

I hear you. I’mstill having trouble with super clipping; I know it’s because more of the engine power is going to recharge the battery towards the end of long straights, but why? Do the drivers not have any control of when to recharge? They can’t control when to use the extra energy? Why doesn’t regen braking harvest more power? It would make brakes more predictable and less prone to overheating. I know my electric car can bring itself to a standstill with just regen, and so there’s plenty of brake pad material left even after over 125,000 miles.

I don’t think it was that common except at Kirin City. Their menu literally says that they don’t pour the head off, and they serve the glass with half of foam: Menu

I already had a professionally installed solar system on my roof, but the capacity isn’t great (12 years old) and adding to it isn’t feasible. I do have a pergola over my backyard patio, so I bought 4 new (and large) panels, an off-grid inverter, and 5kWh battery. I put the panels on the pergola, ran wiring into the garage, and hooked up the inverter and battery in there. I then wired one of my level 1 chargers to the inverter. I use it to help charge my cars. I try to plug the charger in during the day as much as we can to charge the cars directly, but the 5 kWh server rack battery is there to soak up electrons when the cars are in use.

I thought about skipping the server rack battery for a cheaper setup, but it’s been worth it considering how often a car isn’t available to charge directly. It’s not integrated into the house circuits, so no permit needed.

My wife’s family has property out in the forest (Navajo reservation) with a house that doesn’t have running water or power, so we’re going to start fixing it up for her mom to live there (she recently retired) and will be setting up an off-grid power solution and water system soon. We’ll have to haul water from the nearest chapter house, but there’s a program to provide and install a 1200 gallon storage tank underground that we’ll use. Probably augment that with a rainwater catchment setup. Maybe even start raising sheep again, no one in her family has used their grazing rights for years, since her grandmother passed away. My wife spent many summers at that property. Used to be summer only due to the snow and dirt roads, but thanks to global warming, it’s a viable year-round housing site now.
