All the ones near me are full of trees, conifers so still not helping pollinators but it is food and shelter for native animals. Golf is not intrinsically bad, the sport can exist without being so classist and environmentally destructive, we just need to accept kinda-janky conditions. Like one my friends live by: it's right by a tidal flat and quite muddy when the water's high, the grass is dotted with sand patches, and there's ducks and geese grazing the lawn or rooting around the marshy edges constantly.

Environmentalism is important but so are outdoor recreation spaces. We don't need to live in Lothlorien. (We do need to stop using so many pesticides)

It's not ideal, sure. All man-made structures are bad in that sense, and an 18 hole golf course is far from the most efficient user/area recreation facility. Doesn't mean it's an evil and irredeemable pastime.

It depends on where you're talking. The golf courses around me are often built on land that isn't good for housing. Ground won't support even single family homes. That said, returning them to forest or prairie land as a public park is an option. Which is fine by me.

I've got just the place for low-cost housing. I have solved this problem. I know where we can build housing for the homeless: golf courses! It's perfect! Just what we need. Plenty of good land, in nice neighborhoods, land that is currently being wasted on a meaningless, mindless activity engaged in primarily by white, well-to-do male businessmen who use the game to get together to make deals to carve this country up a little finer amongst themselves. I am getting tired, really getting tired, of these golfing cocksuckers in their green pants, and their yellow pants, and their orange pants, and their precious little hats and their cute little golf carts! It is time to reclaim the golf courses from the wealthy and turn them over to the homeless! Golfing is a arrogant, elitist game which takes up entirely too much room in this country. Too much room' in this country! It is an arrogant game on its very design alone, just the design of the game speaks of arrogance. Think of how big a golf course is - the ball is that fucking big! What do these pin-headed pricks need with all that land?! There are over seventeen thousand golf courses in America, they average over one hundred and fifty acres a piece - that's three million plus acres, four thousand, eight hundred and twenty square miles - you could build two Rhode Islands and a Delaware for the homeless on the land currently being wasted on this meaningless, mindless, arrogant, elitist, racist, there's another thing; the only blacks you'll find at country clubs are carrying trays. And a boring game. A boring game for boring people. You ever watch golf on television? It's like watching flies fuck! And a mindless game, mindless. Think of the intellect it must take, to draw pleasure from this activity: hitting a ball with a crooked stick and then, walking after it! And then, hitting it again! I say pick it up asshole, you're lucky you found the fucking thing! Put it in your pocket and go home, you're a winner! You've found it! No chance of that happening. Dork-o in the plaid knickers is going to hit it again and walk some more. Let these rich cocksuckers play miniature golf! Let them fuck with a windmill for an hour and a half or so! See if there's any real skill among these people. Now I know there are some people who play golf who don't consider themselves rich. FUCK 'EM! And shame on them for engaging in an arrogant, elitist passtime.

No, it's describing an actual example. This is why whataboutism is a disputed fallacy, you realize.

Though one might point out that while Xi publicly denounces hegemony and extreme nationalism there's quite a lot of jingoist rhetoric pushed through other means, not to mention saber rattling over territory, that's still a far cry from the head of state threatening to invade your neighbors just because.

The traditional Marxist argument would be that Marx thought liberalism/capitalism could be a required step towards communism, even if he had some hope of Russia skipping the stage for cultural reasons.

They then claim that China is merely in that step towards socialism, and point to things like the re-education of certain billionaires as proof that the people/party are still in control.

Personally I think that's a bunch of nonsense and they're a fascist state that, admittedly, will probably be less racist and expansionist than the incoming American Empire.

The types who bleat about "actually existing socialism" do.

Cuba has the best argument, IMO. The people they killed/tossed out mostly had it coming. Most of the problems can be directly attributed to US sanctions, and those sanctions only serve the interests the people who got thrown out (or their decedents, at this point). Both the US and Cuba are harmed more than they're helped by those sanctions.

If I wanted an example of Marxist-Leninism working, Cuba would be it, even with obvious issues. The rest are only successful if you have a shitty definition of success.

"good" courses exist. They are just quite rare

In my area there are at least 2 courses that have very reasonable member fees (not more than other sports clubs) where things like golf clubs and balls renting is included if you need them. Plus all kinds of free weekends

They are also not targeted to rich snobs. So you can actually meet people there without being looked down upon

As for the course itself: they are located in area that are not really suitable for things like apartment development etc. And they take care of the more wild parts of nature (making sure that some area are completely off limits during nesting season due example)

Does it have an impact compared to it not being there? Sure. But they do a lot for the surrounding, and it gets people into nature that otherwise probably wouldn't

All the courses in the middle of cities or climates that don't naturally support a course can go fuck themselves, though

abfarid@startrek.website · 2 pts · 1y (4 replies)

It will likely not make the planet inhospitable to all people, just some. In fact, a bunch of people will benefit from it, like those living in colder climates (at least for some time).

KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Even in colder climates it kind of sucks, remember that it also makes winters colder and weather more chaotic

abfarid@startrek.website · 1 pts · 1y

technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Dammit, don’t make me support communism now.

Why not? What is so appealing about the oppressive hierarchies of capitalism? Literally destroying the planet...

I don't think communism is perfect or even deserving of much loyalty, but anti-capitalism is the only reasonable position.

phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 1y

Unbridled capitalism is very bad indeed, but the basics of it aren't bad. It can generate a lot of wealth through freedom. If you properly tax that wealth (top level brackets go 90-100%) then you have an enormous budget for a socialist framework that gives you anything from free healthcare to free education to free basic housing for everyone, etc.

Communism has a huge amount of issues that simply makes it impractical. You need to remove a lot of freedoms, everything requires a huge burocracy, you'll always (no exceptions in history) end up having to murder all your opponents and anyone who doesn't want to fall in line... Communism is nice on paper but in the real world there hasn't been a single example where it didn't cause untold suffering

I'll go with the former, thank you.

And again, yeah, capitalism as in the US is a shit show that needs to die in a fire, but come on, be realistic here for a second, capitalism looks shit in places like the US but if used well, it could generate heaven on earth for everyone

How is your feeling towards disc golf? It still required a large amount of area, but the grass doesn't have to be perfectly cut, and the sport allows a lot more trees and plants - in fact it requires a lot more vegetation to make an interesting course.

Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I've seen a disc golf course be integrated into a local park, without any damage to nature. If only more sports could be this eco-friendly.

dQw4w9WgXcQ@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 1y

My local course is on the foot of a mountain, with the course utilizing the trees and natural open areas to make nice lines as well as some mountain sides and hills. Very few trees were chopped in the process, and it's not really an area suitable for housing or industries. However, I know that disc golf has quite a different course style at more professional levels. A lot of the courses on pro tours are basically golf courses integrated with disc golf, which doesn't really help with killing off ball-and-club golf.
