so is f2ap the porn hosting one, or is that just a really poorly chosen name?

xnx@slrpnk.net · 20 pts · 341d (3 replies)

They all have poorly chosen names to be fair. Open source projects choose the worst names and most confusing UX and then call everyone dumb for using programs that actually try to get people to enjoy them or at least be able to spell them

Dave@lemmy.nz · 10 pts · 341d

Made up spellings are bad, but good luck searching for anything that isn't a made up spelling or two words put together.

MrMakabar@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 341d

That is the clear difference to close source. YouTube, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Twitter, PowerPoint or Word are amazing names....

julian@community.nodebb.org · 4 pts · 341d

Sorry you're just in the wrong because you don't know how to easily spell my new app nncjcosiwhebf

duh.

f2ap (Feed to ActivityPub) is a web application that uses the RSS/Atom feed of your website to expose it on the Fediverse through ActivityPub.

C’mon, it’s just fap

Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 341d

I gave you a github link so you could go tell that to the creator

lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org · 0 pts · 341d

Someone is projecting, I see.

Novamdomum@fedia.io · 13 pts · 341d (1 reply)

See, this is why I keep struggling when I'm telling someone about something I heard on here and they ask if it was on reddit

"No... it was on erm... well... it's this other place. It's not reddit... thank God it's not reddit but it's called erm... well it was Mbin and then that shut down and then it was kbin and now I'm on fedia.io but actually it's lemmy... but it's part of the fediverse... I think? it's... yeah it's like reddit basically but it's not... anyway this asteroid is going to zip by the earth later today. Here's a live youtube page that's tracking it" 🤣

lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org · 4 pts · 341d

It's on poob. Poob has it for you.

davidgro@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 341d (1 reply)

Some of them are definitely more descriptive than others.

Lemmy's isn't great, but at least it's not a generic chat box or radio waves, or a graph (nodes and lines)

AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 341d

honk.

toothbrush@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 10 pts · 341d (3 replies)

Wow, lots of fediverse projects I had no idea existed! Epicyon for example. Although I dont think bluesky is part of the fediverse...

wakest@app.wafrn.net · 2 pts · 340d (2 replies)

Well it gets harder and harder to differentiate what is and is not part of the fediverse. With the fully implemented 2 way bridge called Bridgy Fed you can carry on completely conversations from the fediverse with bluesky people interwoven in the same conversations…

toothbrush@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 340d (1 reply)

well, to me its part of the fediverse if it uses activitypub. You can bridge whatsapp, telegram and mastodon with matrix and a minecraft server, that doesnt make them be a part of the matrix protocol or the fediverse.

https://matrix.org/ecosystem/bridges/

https://tgbridge.vanutp.dev/en/

wakest@piefed.social · 2 pts · 340d

Whatsapp, telegram and Minecraft are centralized, so there's no way to have a two-way communication between someone on one of those and someone on the fediverse, whereas with the bridgy bridge it speaks native activitypub and native atproto and acts as the gobetween. There is not anything like this for any other type of bridge I have ever used. Now something like this could indeed be done with Matrix and there have been some attempts at this but I still haven't seen any of them work in practice

I thought CalcKey renamed themselves to Firefish, and then development on the whole project stopped? I know that Sharkey is a popular fork that still seems to be in development.

wakest@app.wafrn.net · 1 pts · 340d

They did stop a while after that but multiple forks from that point carried on. Sharkey and Iceshrimp are both still active and were forked from the work that Firefish did on Misskey

Does the creator of seppo know what seppo means? Is the intent for it to mean the same thing or is it named that for some other reason?

Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 341d (4 replies)

What does seppo mean and in which language? It doesn't mean anything in the languages I know.

hanrahan@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 341d (1 reply)

Australian slang, a very rude euphisism for a US citizen.

It's rhyming slang for Yank (Yankee doodle dandy) --> septic tank -- > Seppo

Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 341d

I would have never thought of that linguistic flow. :)

ZoDoneRightNow@kbin.earth · 2 pts · 340d (1 reply)

It means yank or someone from the USA in Australian english. Commonly used in Australia and anti-USA circles.

ZoDoneRightNow@kbin.earth · 1 pts · 340d

It is rhyming slang

wakest@app.wafrn.net · 1 pts · 340d (4 replies)

hey @mro (seppo creator) did you know this quip?

mro@digitalcourage.social · 1 pts · 335d (3 replies)

Hi @wakest @ZoDoneRightNow @mesamunefire,
what does it mean for you?

ZoDoneRightNow@kbin.earth · 1 pts · 335d (1 reply)

It is rhyming slang for "Yank" meaning American in Australian english. It is sometimes considered derogatory though Australians often use it in jest. From Yank you get septic tank which was then shortened to seppo.

mro@digitalcourage.social · 1 pts · 334d

Hi @ZoDoneRightNow @mesamunefire @wakest,
Yank like in Yankee? Slangs of the world, endless traps for (product) names.

Regarding your initial Q: no, seppo carries no meaning. I once thought of "self-post", but dropped that.

So much branding, so little time.

leraje@piefed.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 341d

Iconography clearly 'designed' by coders.

Lodespawn@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 341d (2 replies)

What is honk? A web search doesn't seem to turn up much detail ..

Oh, never mind, there's a link
