US agents are investigating the Charlie Kirk murder suspect's Steam account, but I'm not sure what 2,000 hours in Sea of Thieves is supposed to tell us
it's supposed to connect 'steam' with 'extremism' instead of something like Twitter, Truth, or Fox to coincide with their recent 'fact finding mission'
Steam is very much connected to extremism. Far right extremisn to be precise.
Take a look at any Steam forum and you'll see. The reason is because Valve hardly ever hires moderators and delegates responsibility to the developer who created the game the forum is about.
I think German speaking Steam has a total of two global (i.e. paid by Valve) moderators? Not sure where I've heard this though.
This actually true, even though I swear it didn’t used to be like that. There are sooo many far right people on the forums and in the discussions. I was looking up a game where one of the female characters has the option to date her female friend. I went to the discussion tab to see if anyone knew what choices you had to pick to unlock it. A whole bunch of trolls calling the game “woke” and disgusting for hating an OPTIONAL story arc. Even on games like Life is Strange, which isn’t a new game and is pretty well known for having lgbtq elements, tons of far right people gay-bashing in the discussions tab.
If you're suggesting that political assassinations are more common in modern times, let me introduce you to the Life Details column of the List of Roman Emperors wiki page.
Or literally any fps. You dont even have to play things like CS or R6 to know, that shouting racial slurs into the voice Chat is relatively common in this games.
I see. Video games cause violence. Guns had nothing to do with it. Mandatory id, facial scanning, and government reporting on all video game platforms is totally cool and justified. /s
just needed more good guys with guns, obviously. Of course, the same doesn't work in vibeo games, because good guys don't play them. Checkmate, antifas
People under capitalism are so alienated from their work that they escape to something as mundane as Power Washing Simulator. Having a stable job with a modicum of satisfaction and control is a power fantasy nowadays.
Work in HVAC, I go home and play project zomboid. My fantasy is that everyone stops needing me and I can stay inside on a Tuesday and just read and eat sphaghetti straight out of the can.
That's particular simulator game actually has you saving the world from some sort of Alien UFO time traveler conspiracy plot though doesn't it? It's not quite as mundane as some other simulator games like farming or truck driving sims.
I am telling you that there is proof video games effect people. Ever notice how most people born in the 80s grew up and all became plumbers? I mean sure all the competition has driven costs down for all of us and with just a little work you can find a plumber that will do the work for free, but a lot of these plumbers can no longer support their families and are forced to live in sewers and fight turtles for food.
The trick to using effect/affect is to use them interchangeably and at random, then you're bound to be right sometime. Or panic and use "impact" instead, like a coward.
:( Ah, I didn't mean to actually criticize you lol I was just running with the anal grammar nazi comment chain pattern. You're good, a comma works fine enough.
Games are about having a good time. If your idea of a good time is story and completionism, then sure, what a waste of time. Some people just want to vibe, role play, or socialize.
Also some people just leave launchers open and rack up ghost hours unintentionally.
Edit: I'm amused there's so many reasons for leaving the launcher open I didn't even think of. Personally, mine was just having a bad habit of playing Elite Dangerous until I fell asleep in the chair. Computer would go to sleep, I'd rack an extra ~16 hours before ei came back. Then I'd remember to check in the morning, cutting it down to like 7 extra hours. I probably have 100-200 racked up from before I got better sleep commitment. 2020 was an interesting time in which time itself didn't matter for a bit. Rounding 1100 hours now.
Also some people just leave launchers open and rack up ghost hours unintentionally.
An uncommon case, but I like to suspend the game process so I can get back into the game without wading through loading screens etc. But with Steam at least playtime tracking increases during this time so it seems like I have 100s of hours of playtime.
I had eight separate accounts to farm drops. I don't think it really provided any real value. At one point my backpack was worth over $200, which for a kid with no income was a lot of money. I still have some of my favorite items, even though I haven't played TF2 in years.
We played the fuck out of elite dangerous. Still do, sometimes. But during the pandemic when even the outdoors were largely shut down, and it was snowing sideways... I'm getting close to 1,100 hours too.
Glad to see another player! There's at least 4 of us here. I still love it, but play rate dropped way down when I went back to the office with a commute. I believe I hit about 700 hours 2020-2021. The events over the last year rekindled my interest and acquired my focus. The Thargoid invasion was fun, though I didn't do much battle. But I nabbed a few dozen base-level goid kills since surface-based air battles didn't have swarms. There were a few lucrative community goals since then as well. I made 1.5 billion last month with a cargo haul loop where I managed top 25% (mild addiction). I'm close to handing in the current CG with exploration data, though I'm not sure what the payout really will be. Should be solid top 50% for that.
I'm not into the grind. I'm into the vibe. 1000+ hours with ~23 ships but only 4.x bil in the bank. High imp rank (got the Cutter) but still 2 ranks below unlocking the Corvette. Aside from CGs, I don't really do any activity more than 3 play sessions in a row.

I miss the high stakes/high reward gameplay that made elite feel dangerous, when your miners needed lasers and sidewinder missiles. I'm hopeful that they will bring mining back that can make enough money to support carriers.
All that said, work towards the Corvette! It's one of the best large ships in the game. Twin Class 4 plasma accelerators w/engineering, g5 dirty drag drives, and prismatic shields are insane. Put a multicannon on the bottom, two turretted lasers with thermal vent effects on top, and sidewinder racks on the side for long range interdictions. Having an AI pilot with a fixed laser taipan or fixed multi cannon F63 is insane for throwing power around too. Throw some SCBs on for the prismatics, and you can be in CZs or haz reses for a long time, safely.
This is true. Could have just left the title screen up so he could jump in and save 45 seconds. I never do this personally because I want an accurate hour count.
I have almost 1600 hours on Rocket League. I don't play anymore (actually haven't touched it in years) but it was the thrill of competition that kept me going, not the content.
Really depends on how you treat the game. If you're solo PvE there's like 100 hours. If you're playing with friends and treating it as a PvP game, it's essentially endless content.
It's a game with procedurally generated content, so it has infinite content. It's also a great multiplayer co-op game, where you need to work together with friends to accomplish things.
Jesus Christ, if true, what the holy incompetence.
Nothing incompetent about it. Just evil this time.
They want a profile of the guy. They want to sell him as a left-wing extremist. They'll outright lie about it if they have to--they mostly have already--but lies work better when they're based on some level of truth.
I mean, I met enough shit shots who can't figure out "if the hole in the paper is lower than where you're aiming, aim more up" and video games kind of teach that kind of problem solving.
Not really. In CS the first few shots go directly into the crosshair, but when firing continuously you have to aim downwards. So there its the other direction than in real life.
I'd rather not since there was the whole fiasco with the guy buying the shirt the killer wore having the FBI come after him. I found it by searching for the guy's twitter handle and one of the usernames posted in the screenshot
To me what's stupid is that they found nothing, as most of us would have expected going through a steam account, and yet they are "leaking" this information and what kind of bullshit narrative are they trying to push this time.
Trying to back up RFK's bullshit, disproven games caused mass shootings BS?
The fuckheads in office are searching for stuff they can blame. It's couldn't possibly because he was a right wing nutjob. Oh no it must be video games! Time to start cracking down on that now!
Do you mean those totally legit messages that totally didn't sound like it was a mix of someone from the 60s and cop speak? Or did he criticize somewhere else?
My only bias in the situation is not trusting cops, espescially Trumps justice department and Patel's FBI.
If you look for any information outside of what the administration says and what the news repeats, you will see many people believe it was fabricated. People who are the same age as him say it doesn't read plausible, people on the far right say it doesn't sound like anything they have read, leftists say it sounds like no kid they have come across, people who study linguistics say it doesn't match someone his age and the writing cadence is weird, especially someone who spent as much time online as him.
It's just super fishy, and I would be skeptical no matter who was in charge. I think a healthy dose of skepticism is important in today's environment. We will find out more when this comes up in court.
The Groyper War began in the fall of 2019, when Fuentes and his followers launched a social media campaign targeting Turning Point USA's "Culture War" college tour, led by Charlie Kirk. Motivated by the firing of a Fuentes ally and other conflicts, Groypers disrupted college events by asking provocative questions on immigration, Israel, and LGBT rights to challenge mainstream conservative figures like Kirk, Donald Trump Jr., and Ben Shapiro, whom they labeled "Conservative Inc." for deviating from their far-right views.
This is also why Ben Shapiro went into hiding shitting himself.
The evangelicals supporting trump are responsible for the recent mastercard debacle to remove steam games. I wouldn't be surprised if they start into a new wave "video games cause violence" bullshit.
Also I thought the kid seemed fairly normal but him being a SoT sicko makes me wonder.
That’s because 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was charged earlier this week with murdering Kirk at a speaking event last week, reportedly used Donald Trump’s name as an alias on the Valve-owned gaming storefront at one point. Sources told Bloomberg the reference to the president is what led to the Secret Service’s involvement despite the Homeland Security agency having no role in protecting Kirk at the time of the assassination.
He bagged some transgender baddie and it turned a God-fearing conservative white boy into a radical sleeper cell leftist assasin. That's why they are trying to keep us transgender girlies down...
Yeah, if the published narrative is true this is a man who was taught by the right wing all their shit with guns and everything that came out of the militia movement through maga, then fell for a trans chick, and questioned the narrative but not the means then did what the right was amping up to do.
The left was taught through extreme state retaliation and intense media spin that violent actions work against our goals outside very specific situations (waiting for them to attack first in ways the center is horrified by). Between cointelpro and the green scare we've more or less learned to keep to demonstrations that strive to build popular support. Meanwhile during that same time the right has been building armed compounds because they understand the double standards. After Waco the government was afraid to crack down on righr wing paramilitaries.
Nah killfeeds are basically dead these days. Modern games are so information dense that many don't even ship the feed and if they do most people don't even notice it. That's definitely not why someone would meme as Donald Trump.
It's just rage bait and I agree with OP that no left/liberal person would cosplay Donald Trump because why would you rage bait your own side? It's like an Ukrainian puting Putin avatar on - it makes no sense other than brain damage.
It's supposed to paint the "Games turn people violent" narrative, nothing else.
This dude could have 2000 hours on Animal Crossing and they'd still find a way
They’re trying to obtain chat logs and communications across any channels. Each game’s developer is probably going to get a subpoena to hand them over.
Steam said I have 173.9 hours in Hollow Knight. Then I clicked play, clicked abort launch, and now it says 16.1 hours. The in-game display, which is actually accurate, shows 30.7 hours.
It doesn't count offline playtime (or at least it didn't in the past). So most of my playtime for Half Life, Half Life 2, Celeste, Slime Rancher, and some others I played mostly while traveling is in invisible. Except people online say it's still tracked for the refund policy lol. I suspect there might be a weird interaction with the case where the steam deck dies when a game is paused in sleep mode.
Anyways not really related to the post I just wanted to rant about this because the time tracker is weird and kind of annoying
I'm still not convinced that this was the guy. The FBI's narrative doesn't make any sense. Does anyone know a conspiracy theory community where I can go full tin foil hat?
The most I've used it was too annoy my friend to join my game or let me join theirs, and I only used steam messaging because he was on "do not disturb" on discord but I assumed (correctly) that he forgot to change steam
The game was released for Nintendo 64 on August 31, 1999
Well, gramps, every game mentioned in that article has mostly positive reviews on Steam. Have you considered that you're just set in your ways and clinging to what you enjoyed last century? lol
I've never played it. But it looks like most people who did, liked it, especially considering that it's much more likely for someone who hated it to leave a bad review, than it is for someone who likes it to leave a good one.
Jesus Christ this is a more wholesome list of games played than I've seen in most children's accounts. Deep Rock Galactic? I'm kinda believing that he actually wasn't a lunatic right.
I look like a deranged violent psychopath with play time comparisons.

Absolutely, here is RFK on Sept 10 saying they cause mass shootings. (Completely ignoring the ENTIRE WORLD OUTSIDE THE US)

Also Congress has called for the leaders of discord, steam, Reddit and twitch to come and testify about extremism.

I don't see any of the social media heads who donated to Trump's inaugural on that list.

I have almost 1600 hours on Rocket League. I don't play anymore (actually haven't touched it in years) but it was the thrill of competition that kept me going, not the content.

The real content is the friends/enemies you make along the way
DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 342d
Have you actually played the game lately? In my opinion there is no lack of content
Zoomboingding@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 341d
Really depends on how you treat the game. If you're solo PvE there's like 100 hours. If you're playing with friends and treating it as a PvP game, it's essentially endless content.
merc@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 341d
It's a game with procedurally generated content, so it has infinite content. It's also a great multiplayer co-op game, where you need to work together with friends to accomplish things.

cows_are_underrated@feddit.org · 3 pts · 341d
Not really. In CS the first few shots go directly into the crosshair, but when firing continuously you have to aim downwards. So there its the other direction than in real life.

He was an active groyper.
This is also why Ben Shapiro went into hiding shitting himself.
damnedfurry@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 340d
This is pretty much the opposite of what Robinson did, so...what are you talking about?
Also, groypers didn't criticize Kirk because he 'spreads too much hate'—if anything, they think he's not extreme enough. Another direct contradiction.
I think you're believing what you want to believe, not what the evidence points to.
