The irony, I swear
Edit: To add, we've had a similar situation with the romanian diaspora in europe voting mostly for the anti-eu candidate during the presidentials. The mind boggles.

Yup. The Romanian diaspora is simultaneously being treated like undesirable immigrants, and wants immigrants in Romania to be thrown out to protect the "purity" of the country. A country they no longer live in, and have no intention of returning to.

Every time I hear something about AfD or one of the other far-right morons I play a game in my head: where did they steal this one from? Which part of MAGA is reflected here? In this case: the Latin Vote. They see how the apparent contradiction can simply be ignored and the same rhetoric applied.
BTW, my mom is an immigrant in Germany herself (not Turkish though) and happily repeating all of AfD's anti-immigration talking points.

Love my mom. After happily living in Germany for 50 years or so she is now applying for citizenship so that she can vote against those fuckers.

This gives me hope.

Why can't the fucking media stop calling the SPD "center-left"? There is nothing left left in the SPD, they are really just another neoliberal centrist party with right leaning tendencies, always ready to copy any half way successful right winger's rhetoric and ideas.
That the SPD lost support of the lower classes is no surprise and a direct result of everything the SPD has done in the past 3 decades.
Of course, it's monumentally stupid of the lower classes to flock to fascists instead, especially for people with immigrant background, but the AfD's Propaganda is especially aimed at lower income demographics, and thanks to a whole bunch of parrots in the media and copycats in the "democratic" parties, they are gaining popularity instead of losing it.
Melchior@feddit.org · 8 pts · 319d
Left, right and center depend on the country. In the German context the SPD is center left. Not because they would have been so in the past. The party certainly moved to the right, but because they support more left leaning policies then the CDU.
DonPiano@feddit.org · 2 pts · 319d
Eh. I'd say it's center right, the c*u is right, there's the fascists/far right and then you have the social democratic parties left of center like the greens and the linke.
Things don't have to be relative in this context either. They're also relative, but you can use more absolute criteria as well. Stuff like "wants no one to be coerced into employment" vs "wants some people coerced mildly" vs "wants to coerce everyone to be employed". Or the converse with regards to social security. Or criteria relating to individual rights. Or regulation in favor of hierarchical power structures vs regulations in favor of non-hierarchical power structures. These would all be meaningful left-right aligned analytical lenses.
I do agree though that relative statements can for certain contexts be more immediately practical. But also, the case of the spd is one where thinking about the space of possible party landscapes is relevant: What if the spd were center-left, in the sense of reformist left-wing/labor movement/syndicalist-ish policies, instead of a seeheimer circle oriented mildly right-wing party? That would present a very different type of discourse in society, i feel.
RedstoneValley@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 319d
The SPD was always like that. There is a quote by Tucholsky saying that about the SPD in 1932.
Translation by deepl, original below
"It is unfortunate that the SPD is called the Social Democratic Party of Germany. If, since August 1, 1914, it had been called the Reformist Party or the Party of the Lesser Evil or Here Families Can Make Coffee or something like that, the new name would have opened the eyes of many workers, and they would have gone where they belong: to a workers' party. But as it is, the shop does its bad business under a formerly good name."
trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 319d
You're right, but the SPD also had a brief interlude where they actually did advocate and advance workers' rights from the end of WW2 until the early 1980s.
fnix@awful.systems · 2 pts · 316d
It’s not wrong, but was there also a good alternative party at the time? AFAIK, the communists were happy to see Weimar burn, hoping it’s them and not the Nazis who would rise from the ashes.

Or maybe just normal citizens that don't want illegal immigrant around ? I mean, as far as I know AfD (and every other supposely anti immigration Right wing party) want to not have illegal immigrant, they don't really care about legal immigrant that follow the local laws and are integrated in the society.
poVoq@slrpnk.net · 31 pts · 319d
My friend, the AfD wants to "remigrate" immigrants that are so well integrated that they have German citizenship 🙄
Lupus@feddit.org · 15 pts · 319d
To give this a little context :in 2023 there was a Secret meeting between afd officials and far right extremists where they discussed the deportation (remigration is a euphemism used to mask the inhumanity that is evoked here) of millions of immigrants and citizens.
After huge backlash and demonstrations in 23/24 the party started to embrace the term and wove it into their official party line, not unlike 'project 2025' from maga.
So no, it is not 'concerned citizens' that just want to protect society from 'criminals', they are racist, dehumanizing bigots who are planning fascist deportations of 'undesirables', not exclusive to immigrants but also including citizens, also not unlike ICE and MAGA are acting at the moment. Nevermind that at least in Germany this goes against basic constitutional law including article 1 of the German constitution:
germanichwurst@feddit.org · 12 pts · 319d
My wife is a "legal migrant". That's bullshit they hate her too. They are making it almost impossible to have papers. The issue with people like you is that they're too stupid to realize they're destroying people's life and that they're existence is increasing overall human suffering
Cazzo fascista puta
gian@lemmy.grys.it · -7 pts · 319d
People tends to note the illegal immigrants that live that live by petty (or big) crimes, not your wife that is a good citizen.
And it is too easy to associate your wife with the illegals since I suppose your wife will not go around with is passport or any other documents pinned to her back for everyone to read.
Oh yes, the concept of consequence.
Oh well, I maybe am stupid like you say, but I can understand that having an always increasing number of immigrants that are on welfare is not sustainable for any country. Do you want your country (and your life) ruined by illegal immigrants on welfare ? Be my guest but keep the insults for people who do not want it for yourself.
poVoq@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 319d
Come on, you can do better than repeating these false talking points.
Most immigrants are not on welfare, the exception being asylum seekers that are legally prohibited from working, so they have no other choice.
But that is only a small minority and most immigrants pay way more into the social system then they will ever get out of it.
And "illegal" immigrants are certainly not on welfare 🙄
germanichwurst@feddit.org · 3 pts · 319d
There's no such thing as IlleGal immigrant, retard. You just want germany for germans. The very concept is the politically correct version of ethnic clainsing, but the idea is still to "remigrate" people you deem unacceptable. Nobody's fooled. Not even you.
gian@lemmy.grys.it · -1 pts · 318d
No, I want my country for people who respect the laws of my country.
If they don't, they can simply go somewhere else if they are not Italians or go to jail if they are Italians.
What a monster I am to want to "remigrate" people who arrive here, live by petty crimes, don't want to be part of the society and pretend to impose their laws to the country hosting them.
Let my ask you one thing: would do like it if I would come to your home, trash it and impose my rules to you in your own home ?
germanichwurst@feddit.org · 1 pts · 318d
A country isn't a home you dumbass nazi.
"Don't want to be part of society" they took 1 years to refuse my wife visa, idiot. It's society and scum like yourself who rejects them, not the other way around.
gian@lemmy.grys.it · -1 pts · 318d
Oh yes, I now understand the type of person you are.
You are the kind of person who think that once him and is house are ok, then everything else can crumble and it is not his problem, like he is not part of the society he lives in.
Well, bad news for you: keep thinking like this and you and your contry will end like many places in southern Italy where they have beautifull homes (inside) that are in ruin on the outside because who care to maintain what is not mine and, for example, in the summer they have not water because "hey it is not my fucking problem that the guys who need to maintain the water system do their work".
You can always choose to go where they don't care about laws... after all "a country is not a home", correct ?
kossa@feddit.org · 1 pts · 318d
I always love that 'home' metaphor, so let's roll with it.
So, suppose somebody is coming into my home and starts shitting in the living room. I do not like that.
But, here's the thing: I feel morally obliged to let him shit in my living room and spend resources to better that person, when he's gonna be lynched by an angry mob on the outside as an alternative.
That is the moral question that determines what kind of human being one is: do you help people that are in danger, even if they stink, shit in your living room or otherwise inconvenience you? I hope for sure I am the person who helps.
And, to be honest, it is also not that strange, that he starts shitting in my living room, when I deny him access to the toilet the second he enters my home ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You're a brainwashed retard lmao. Give immigrants jobs and they won't be on welfare, retard.

Which will be shot down as soon as they will try it, if your legal system is decent as I think it is and you were able to solve the problems that increase their popularity.

I have to say. The way some outlets and people concentrate on second, third and fourth generation immigrants that vote the NSDAP 2.0, seems to me like the middle class germans are looking for a way to blame someone else but themself. The main voting bloc for the fascist is like everywhere else the middle class because they dont want to share with people they view as below them.

Newer migration competes with established communities for low skill labour, puts pressure on unskilled labour wages, increases conpetition for affordable housing and tipically increases criminality in neighbourhoods typically inhabited by low income families. Maybe, instead of the entire thread dunking on the Turks like fucking racists that you are, people can stop for a minute and ask why are these communities reacting like this. Migration is a serious issue and has toppled many a leader when brought to the fore as a political talking point. Maybe drop the dogmas and look at the data! It's always the poorer that feel the pressure just so privileged Hans can afford a housekeeper and a gardner with his Beamte wage!

Germans can't be trusted
RedstoneValley@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 319d
You really think the Stasi (Secret Police in the former GDR, East Germany for those who don't know) existed to protect the citizens from fascism? That's the most outrageously boneheaded tankie propaganda I have ever read.
germanichwurst@feddit.org · -4 pts · 319d
Oh they definitely existed to protect citizens from fascism. As a belgian person I'd sleep better at night knowing the Germans are under control
RedstoneValley@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 318d
I don't trust Germans too (Source: I am German) but you'll have to take into account that the Stasi members were German as well. And they had a very German approach at running things. Torture, murder, propaganda, organising a system where basically everyone was forced to spy and snitch on their neighbor was carried out with great bureaucratic precision and accuracy. They had learned this kind of inhuman technocracy from the Nazis and perfected it.
ceiphas@feddit.org · 1 pts · 317d
And you call all germans fascists, that have to be kept under control? really?
you know what that means for you?

Yeah I'm Belgian. Call it generational trauma, there is something in their culture that makes then prone to thinking their superior people and to invade and do massacre. They did it 4 times already. It's not racist to say that but I think there's too much of them and we'd better sending then back east where they came from
