Americans will use anything but metric

Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de · 9 pts · 298d (4 replies)

We use mm more than any other country. Just ask our school kids.

I can't parse this. What do you mean?

Noved@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 297d (2 replies)

Mm as in millimeters as in guns.

chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 297d (1 reply)

Ah. So, the joke only makes sense if you think about mm the way an American would. Understood. Kind of, but it doesn't matter

Noved@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 297d

Haha, yeah that I guess eh?

The mano-digital system is clearly superior.

Does your metric system tell you how many fingernails are in a pint? Didn't think so!

Go eat some more cheese and ride a reasonably priced train, euro-snob.

USians. The rest of America is happy with the metric system

I find this guide so confusing that I doublechecked if this was a shitposting community.

These amounts only hold for certain things, a palm sized slab of meat, a fist sized serving of casserole, a cupped hand of pudding. You know, normal, helpful ways of measuring.

If the entire guide was that right hand panel with the silhouttes and the actual information, it would at least be clear that they weren't saying you can fit more in a closed fist than an open palm, they're just encouraging you to eat pretzels out of your cupped hands like you're feeding yourself at a petting zoo.

But hands are all different sizes. Terrible guide.

otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 298d

So are guides. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I prefer scales and measuring cups.

DearMoogle@piefed.social · 5 pts · 298d (2 replies)

I measure when home cooking too, but I find this is helpful for eyeballing amounts when eating out

ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 297d (1 reply)

Why would you need to know that?

BCsven@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 297d

In case you want to check if your flat roast beef slice in your palm is the same weight as your 3/4" steak, obviously

Archangel1313@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 298d

This doesn't add up.

1 cupped hand = 1/2 a cup ...and, 2 cupped hands = 1 ounce?

Except, 1 cup = 8 ounces.

All hands are different sizes, but "it works on my machine"

BreadOven@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 297d

Hello. I put one cup in my partner, and now it's stuck. What do I do?

dumbass@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 298d

Just don't let Andre The Giant do the baking.

SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world · 3 pts · 298d

I see "helping hands," and the first thing I think of is the scene from Labyrinth.

Bonus@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 297d

2 hands = 1 ounce*, 1 hand = 3-4 ounces

*Ooh, you forgot to scrunch your hands for accuracy
