Six weeks ago, I was elected to Congress. I'm still waiting to be sworn in.
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s recess of the U.S. House of Representatives during a time of grave national crises is shockingly irresponsible. House Republicans have been on vacation for six weeks while our economy crumbles, federal workers go without paychecks, health care premiums skyrocket and funding for food stamps dwindles. This is negligent and cruel.

I am usually not a fan of witholding taxes (I do think we should invest more taxes into social services and less in defense and none in company subsidies or bailouts), but Arizona really should consider witholding federal taxes until they have representation. Money talks.
ganryuu@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 284d
That's unfortunately not how that works, federal taxes are not held by the state but paid directly to the country, there's no way for the state to withhold it.

Jyek@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 283d
I would say judges should be the ones to swear in all elected officials in the federal government as in theory they are meant to be nonpartisan and unaffiliated but we all know that isn't the reality of the situation. No party should be able to directly stop the action of any elected official based purely on their party affiliation or political platform. Even better still, elected individuals should be sworn in before the election results roll in and should take office the same day the election results are finalized.

danc4498@lemmy.world · -49 pts · 285d
This isn’t owning the libs. It’s politicking. What incentive do they have to confirm this person?
takenaps@lemmy.world · 33 pts · 285d
The incentive is upholding liberty & justice as our elected officials. Our country has a representative government. This person was elected by the people. Anyone standing in the way of that is standing against the US.
danc4498@lemmy.world · -40 pts · 285d

Wow, I might have found the most neurotic person on Lemmy. It was fun reading all those comments, fully grasping your mental gymnastics. So, yes, echo chambers can be common on social media, but it may also be just as common to accuse through a mirror. I must ask you, personally, what kind of political environment are you surrounding yourself with that excuses the GOP and likens its actions to Dems? As a bonus question, what's your opinion on Bernie Sanders?
Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 285d
I'm pretty sure that nominee couldn't have cast the deciding vote to release the Epstein files.
GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 285d
and this is why you people never learn.
didn't realize doing your job as an elected official required legal ramifications as motivation.
besides, democrats aren't required to agree (by anything enforceable), and if that's all republicans have to "convince" the democrats then how did they even gain majority control of the house and senate? unless....they cheated by gerrymandering....
danc4498@lemmy.world · -35 pts · 284d
Sorry I didn’t meet the echo chamber’s approval. As a progressive democrat, I wish “we” would actually learn.
Now you know.
I’m not 100% sure what point you’re making here. But I probably agree. Though I think when republicans win the popular vote for president, the gerrymandering probably isn’t the reason they won the house also.
Next year they definitely need to cheat to win.

“At the first session of Congress after every general election of Representatives, the oath of office shall be administered by any Member of the House of Representatives to the Speaker.”
2 U.S. Code § 25
“Shall” meaning it’s a requirement.

Congress hasn’t been in session yet. That’s the loophole. It’s stil. “Legal”
danc4498@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 283d
Which is why I said “enforceable”.
Like Trump leaving the FEC without a quorum so it can’t enforce election laws. There’s nothing forcing him to appoint anybody. So he leaves it vacant and none of the laws the FEC is responsible for enforcing can be enforced. They’re as good as non existent.
Same with this. There’s no mechanism forcing this guy from swearing in the congressman.
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 284d
Kind of stupid to say something so egregious is the "least bad".
