Having a little anxiety here because this is by far the best app. I purchased a lifetime Ultra membership and it wasn't until I replaced my phone and couldn't restore it, did I find out the developer hasn't updated or posted in 2 years. (Somehow the Ultra got restored a couple days later).
I really hope the dev continued this, or issues a statement regarding the status. I also would pay for a version for Reddit (yeah I know, I just can't quit that completely yet)
Edit: thanks for the responses. So far, Voyager seems to be the closest to Sync and best alternative for me. Really sucks the dev just abandon this.

Yeah, it's dead.
DaMonsterKnees@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 255d
Heh, as a person that still uses it every 6 hours, what do you use?
sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al · 21 pts · 255d
Summit these days.

I gave up on Sync a few months back. I currently use Thunder, it works well and has all the features I need. But I may switch to summit, which seems to load content noticeably faster.
ArchEngel@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 254d
I've been using (and really enjoying) Thunder.

Voyager is amazing
mormund@feddit.org · 35 pts · 255d
For those looking for an alternative, I switched to Voyager after it became clear Sync was abandoned. It feels similar enough to me.

I'm on Voyager, really happily with it
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 7 pts · 254d
I could personally not vibe with Voyager at all. Maybe because I'm not on iOS, I don't know. But it didn't really feel similar to Sync to me.

There's an option to change it to an android Material style UI if you like that, however it's material 2 and not material 3
atrielienz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 253d
I've been looking for this option.

Tbh, as an Android user, I like the iOS look

Does it have the ability to swipe in and out of posts like Sync? Being able to navigate without using the back button is the reason I keep using Sync so far.
CentipedeFarrier@piefed.social · 1 pts · 254d
Does on iOS, dunno about android but I’d assume so
LemUrun@pawb.social · 30 pts · 255d
The support is dead. The app itself will be dead, when Lemmy 1.0 arrive. It's sad, because other clients aren't close to Sync in terms of behaviour.
Twig@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 255d
I'm still using Sync. Is there anything remotely similar out there?
lastweakness@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 255d
Summit and Thunder are cool. Especially Summit.

Summit does. Swipe right to go back up.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 11 pts · 254d
Summit is the best option. It's not exactly the same - it's its own thing and not intended to be a Sync clone - but having tried like a dozen apps after finally leaving Sync behind Summit was the only one that felt right in all the ways I wanted.
It also has a very active dev, who regularly incorporates user suggestions and feature requests.
ObviouslyNotBanana@piefed.world · 9 pts · 254d
That's the thing about sync. It just feels right, somehow. And I agree. Summit is closest in that respect.
cornshark@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 253d
I can't seem to upvote from the feed in compact mode. Tap on thumbnail, read meme, tap back, tap vote button, go to full post page, tap upvote, tap back. Maddening.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 3 pts · 253d
I'm also a compact user, but I just use swipe shortcuts anyway. Short swipe to upvote, long swipe to downvote, longest swipe to reply.
ObviouslyNotBanana@piefed.world · 7 pts · 254d
Another vote for Summit. It is a little different, of course, but it's the closest I've found. The dev is also super responsive and works on the app actively.
LemUrun@pawb.social · 3 pts · 255d
I'm using iOS right now. I'm using Sync too, but on my Edge 40 Neo I have Summit. But it doesn't look as good as Sync. We need more Lemmy apps to bring more diversity.
Ek-Hou-Van-Braai@piefed.social · 4 pts · 254d
What does Voyager lack?
LemUrun@pawb.social · -4 pts · 254d
Fuckin'ell, Voyager fanboy...
Actually nothing (I've used it), but for me no Material You. I know wefwef (Voyager's old name, way more original) was made to look like Apollo for Reddit (users fapping to it switched IMMEDIATELY lol), but I like Material You more.
Mitchie151@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 255d
It's been dead for a while, I jumped ship to Summit. Pretty similar vibe, works well and I'm happy.

Not sure why this person is getting downvoted. I like many others paid for a lifetime membership. Dev supported the app for few months then ghosted. No explanation or update has been given. Totally abandoned at this point.
Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 253d
Anybody who has used sync for a long time (nearly a decade here) has seen that the dev tends to work in spurts. Silence for a long time then bam giant update and a few months of activity then mostly silence again.
I and many others probably hope we'll see it again lol

He's been sus since he launched Sync Ultra.
southsamurai@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 254d
As others have said, it isn't dead, but don't expect any future support or updates.
petersr@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 253d
How do you define dead if not by "no future updates"?
MathiasTCK@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 253d
No future updates and no longer works
petersr@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 253d
Good point. It could stop working if api calls change.
southsamurai@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 251d
Lack of core function, and no sign of future updates in this case.
I'd also apply the term to other situations, such as a github page being taken down without any word from development about it, or similar.
Or, if an app is otherwise functional, but can't be installed/accessed via apk/app store (like the keyboard app swype that works fine, but you have to jump through hoops to install on newer android versions and is no longer listed in any store)

I switch between Boost, Voyager and Summit. I think they're all pretty decent and they all have support for Piefed as well, so that's a nice bonus.
rimu@piefed.social · 7 pts · 255d
I've never used Sync but the screenshots on Google Play remind me of Blorp.

I tried it a while ago and didn't like it but I must say, it's a lot closer to feeling right than it was. It seems pretty nice.
moseschrute@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 254d
Thank you! I’ve put a lot of work into making Blorp good this past year. Let me know if there is still something keeping you from making the switch, and I’ll see if I can make it better.
blackfire@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 254d
Connect has been my go to client. Works perfectly
comradegreetingcard@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 254d
I still can't find a client that works as well as sync on a tablet. Boost and summit have tablet modes, but sync lets you open several posts in tabs, where boost and summit you can only open one at a time. (Also summits post feed is a little cramped in tablet mode and I can't find a setting to make it a bit wider).
galaxy_nova@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 254d
I use Mlem personally.
Fleur_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 253d
Idk man I keep seeing people cry about no updates; I'm yet to experience something that needs updating.
pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 254d
I use the alx frontend for the site that blahaj hosts personally. Used to use sync but it got some deal breaker bugs that the developer never touched. He does tend to come and go, so he'll probably be back at some point, but who knows when
