This Hour Has 22 Minutes is not "Canadian SNL"

kent_eh@lemmy.ca · 23 pts · 259d (2 replies)

Just another example of Americans not having any clues about anything outside their borders and not even caring enough to bother to find out either.

Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 258d (1 reply)

Bro, I've never even heard of this website. Way to baselessly generalize every American, even those that might otherwise align with you.

psycotica0@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 258d

It's not a website, it's a TV show that's been on the air since 1993 (~32 years)

harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 15 pts · 259d

It's much better than SNL.

observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 259d

Clicked this post to say just that

tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 6 pts · 259d (5 replies)

I used to call Boys in the Hall Canadian SNL.

Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 259d (1 reply)

Uh, Kids in the Hall?

tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 4 pts · 259d

Hey, I’m old. I gots the memory problems.

Seriously though, it’s been about 30 years since I’ve seen it.

LeFantome@programming.dev · 4 pts · 259d (2 replies)

Kids in the Hall kind of replaced SCTV which was meant to compete with SNL.

Different formats though.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 254d (1 reply)

Nope. Lorne Michaels produced both Kids in the Hall and SNL, many cast migrated over.

LeFantome@programming.dev · 1 pts · 254d

I have no idea what you are trying to say.

SCTV was created to compete with SNL. It kept many Canadian comedians in Canada, like John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Catherine O’Hare though some also did SNL—like Marin Short.

I am saying Kkds in the Hall filled the comedy void in Canada left by SCTV. You can disagree about that I guess.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 254d

SNL is Canadian SNL. Lorne Michaels is from Toronto and he scouts most of his talent from Canada.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 3 pts · 259d

to bad. I would look up and try to watch this show if is was a canadian sketch commedy show.

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 259d

ThePantser@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 259d (2 replies)

Didn't know about this show and I just subbed with Jellyseer. Being from the US I hate US TV.

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 259d (1 reply)

It can be hot or miss, but if you’re into Canadian politics it’s been very hit this year.

rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 259d

Are you saying Trent McClellan’s dead on Greg Fergus impression isn’t gonna play well in the states?

buffing_lecturer@leminal.space · 1 pts · 259d (11 replies)

How would you describe it?

kia@lemmy.ca · 27 pts · 259d (4 replies)

"This Hour Has 22 Minutes"

Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 259d (3 replies)

This

yannic@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 258d (2 replies)

Has

Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 258d

22

aarch0x40@piefed.social · 9 pts · 259d (1 reply)

It's closer to The Daily Show.

hume_lemmy@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 259d

I'd say more like a slightly political Carol Burnett show.

Adderbox76@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 258d

"The Onion" in video form.

LeFantome@programming.dev · -5 pts · 259d (2 replies)

It is right in the name, “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” is a comedic parody of 60 Minutes and shows like it.

I asked my Chinese AI and it offered this:

This Hour Has 22 Minutes

Mock newsmagazine; sharp, focused, satirical. Cynical, biting, "gotcha" journalism parody. Mostly pre-taped and tightly edited.

Saturday Night Live

Live variety show; broad, chaotic, character-driven. Silly, absurd, celebratory, sometimes clumsy.

I honestly fucking hate this trend. If I wanted to know what an LLM would say about something, I would ask it myself. Shit like this is not a substitute for human interaction.

tomenzgg@midwest.social · 4 pts · 258d

Also, you couldn't pay me to publicly advertise that my ability to look up information had so completely atrophied.

TheJesusaurus@sh.itjust.works · 49 pts · 259d (4 replies)

Calling 22 minutes Canadian SNL is so fucking lazy. One is a live variety show and the other is pre filmed satirical news.

If anything 22 minutes is Canadian Colbert/John Steward

Also, we claim SNL as Canadian already anyway

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 258d

Honey, we have the Daily Show at home.

The Daily Show at home:

John Steward

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 258d

It's like a Canadian Monty Python's Circus.

Aren't those studio interview heavy, though? SNL is where I'd go to explain 22 to a foreigner, even though the live broadcast gimmick isn't there. They do do on-location interviews sometimes, I guess...

TheJesusaurus@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 258d

I dunno 22 minutes is cut and dry satire. SNL is a variety show, sure they dip their toe into pop politics but it's primarily about entertainment/comedy

The difference between Colbert and 22 minutes is one is more of an ensemble and the other is held down primarily by an Individual. There's a talk show element to Stuart/Colbert that isn't there for 22 minutes either

LeFantome@programming.dev · 22 pts · 259d

Let’s see….

SNL was co-created by Canadian Lorne Michaels.

It grew popular due to the comedy talent of Canadians like Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Mike Myers, and others.

Saturday Night Live is the Canadian SNL.

Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 259d

Canadian SNL? WTF is this bullshit?

HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 14 pts · 259d (1 reply)

I'm offended eh. It's not even the same fucking format. Lazy fucking assholes

mika_mika@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 259d

I have never heard of this show, nor am I Canadian, but I am offended for you.

SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 258d

"Canadian SNL"? Next they'll be calling Ed the Sock the Canadian Triumph the Insult Comic Dog

we_all_live_in_a_capital_i@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 258d

Mark Critch has it nailed.

bluegreenpurplepink@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 258d

I was told they would be watching...

CanadaPlus@futurology.today · 1 pts · 258d

I really love the cover. Maybe it's because it manages to be cute while still referencing an appalling, inappropriate moment.
