I knew a guy that was tortured to death in prison by medical staff for having stomach cancer and bothering the nurses too much about it.
At first, before diagnosis, he couldn't keep food down. He asked for a medical exam and they scheduled one like a week out, but canceled it because his blood pressure was too high. The next one was cancelled as was the one after that. By the time they actually looked at him, the cancer had spread and gone terminal. He was going to die by medical neglect.
Some time later, his esophagus ruptured in the night, and the nurse they called at home to check on him said he was faking over the phone, so they locked him in a TV room through the night because he wouldn't stop screaming in pain. Around 9am they got him to a hospital but the damage had already gone septic and he died.
On paper, prisoners might have better "healthcare" but I will never forget the horror stories of people who have actually had to deal with the system. The medical people in prisons will not give a single shit about these people's lives and will actively work against them for being slightly inconvenienced.
I'm going to be splitting hairs here so feel free to disregard I just wanted to be precise.
Stab wounds and other immediately life threatening treatment is about as good as can be expected and emergency rooms can't turn you down for finance/insurance reasons. You'll get a massive bill but they can't really deny you healthcare in this instance.
Now, where you get really fucked over is the years and years of preventative healthcare that would normally prevent/treat the worst outcome as well as the refusal to seek help for what should be concerning enough to warrant a hospital visit otherwise over cost. Torn rotator cuff? Take 1000mg of over-the-counter ibuprofen and hope it goes away.
Prisoners die in custody of completely preventable diseases daily in the US. The for profit jail and prison system has made it so that medical access amounts to nothing, unless you are bleeding out, you get Tylenol or nothing.
Shanks are made for quick, shallow stabs. That's why inmates are rarely stabbed a single time. It's always quick, short strokes. You're looking for infection or blood loss, not typically organ damage.
I was looking for a decent cry/sob emoji and felt like I had used and too recently, and so I landed on that one.
Not sure about the original, but the code I used for it was:
I think that it is unfortunate that he got shanked, as he was convicted and appropriately sentenced for the murder he committed. That is as it should be.
Shank the ones that get away with it, not the ones in jail for it.
You're absolutely correct. I make a policy of not being sad when bad things happen to bad people, but all this post shows is the absolutely terrible conditions of the US prison system.

Prisoners get better healthcare than most non prisoners in the US.

He was also sentenced to 22½ years. I think it's only right that the attacker should be able to slip in an extra half stab.
finitebanjo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 250d
Counterpoint: shiv stabs are basically all half stabs, so he still owes 22 1/2 shiv stabs more.

Is this like the birthday thing in school where the teacher taps your head for each year?

Downvote me all you want but people shouldn't be getting stabbed in prison, cop or not.
BanaramaClamcrotch@lemmy.zip · 15 pts · 249d
The guy who stabbed him was just acting out of self defense and fear for his life. He saw chauvin reach for something, so it’s totally justified.
Walk_blesseD@piefed.blahaj.zone · 14 pts · 249d
Pretty sure Chauvin had fent in his system, and this caused the 22 stab wounds—the fact he was shanked at the same time was just a coincidence.
BanaramaClamcrotch@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 249d
Well isn’t it a coincidence that those “stab wounds” are the exact same size for syringes?
Someone should look into this.

This should never happen
Nollij@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 249d
You're right, and unfortunately this will be used as an excuse for the next cop convicted of brutally murdering an innocent person to avoid prison.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 249d
But at least the person who got stabbed was one of the bad guys.
