Few weeks ago was stung by a bee and yesterday bitten by a bullant and I want to share w/ everybody my scientific findings:

EDIT:

Not so fun event first aid tent visit: getting lemon juice treatment for a bullant bite to the butt

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 13 pts · 237d

Just a PSA that a bunch of library services around Melbourne and Vic are running extended hours today to provide cool spaces for people. I know Mooney Ponds and Hobsons Bay are so assume a lot of them are doing the same.

FOUR HOURS

Edit: there's something so freeing, liberating, about standing on the balcony in my birthday suit. It's the small things in life, really.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d (1 reply)

I like having a shower then standing outside with my turkish towel in the wind to dry. (Like Felicia on top of the bus in Priscilla, Queen of the desert style).

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d (1 reply)

I have to ask the obvious question, can the neighbours see your balcony?!

StudChud@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d

Nope! I get no direct sun either, as my balcony faces the apartment building next door, but there's no windows on that side of that building. A private balcony, when I can hang out nude and smoke joints #yolo ๐Ÿ˜‚

They wish they could see me

StudChud@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 236d (7 replies)

When I was in Egypt last it rained for about 10 mins. The rain evaporated the second it hit the ground.

That was their rain for the week apparently.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d

Pretty sure Rain Dance is usually men. I don't usually claim because genetics and culture are not the same thing. It's not unmessy in many ways.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d

Same, Iโ€™m not going back out there

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d

Second day back at work, called into boss's office and told they're not renewing my contract into a permanent role. Two years at this workplace, pushing myself to my absolute limit, but I guess because I don't regularly work past 5 (coming in well before anyone else mind you), I'm not keeping my job.

It'll be fine in the long run. We have some savings. But goddamn. Not looking forward to going on Jobseeker, hopefully I can get something quick.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d (2 replies)

Start acting your wage. Fuckem. They broke the code first.

Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d (1 reply)

Won't lie, definitely considering completely slacking off between now and my last day. After all, they don't intend to keep me, so why put my all in?

Taleya@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d

They've curated exactly the sort of loyalty they want, after all

SpinMeAround@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d (1 reply)

That's brutal, dude. Good luck! So bullshit that coming in early isnt as valued as staying late.

Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d

I just saw that! And Friday is shaping up to be a real danger day too. I convinced (didn't take much) my whole team to WFH for the rest of the week at least (unless someone needs the A/C). About to go for a quick swim then lock down.

Force_majeure1234@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 237d

It's definitely a mix at my work, people wanting to come in for the Air con (or just free air con) and people who absolutely don't wanna fuck with PT today

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 236d (6 replies)

Weird. Temp just dropped almost 10 degrees where I am.

Edit:

Guess where the perfect aircon spot in the bedroom is.

Not belly up yet

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d

Edit: put the washing out without thongs on concrete and I think my feet are burnt lol

tone212_@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 236d (7 replies)

Leaving the gym earlier, there was a ridiculous line (easy 100 people deep) waiting to get into the crowded indoor pools that are part of the complex. Having to wait for people to leave before letting a new group in. The line snaked around outside too, all these people waiting in the heat for crowds and craziness. No thank you.

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 236d

At that point, stand in the shower.

SpinMeAround@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 236d

That's absolutely crazy. It seems like a great idea, but a line like that would have me scurrying for a library, shopping centre, gym, etc!

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d (4 replies)

That was last week at Brimbank Aquatic centre....we went to work out and the lineup was bonkers.

tone212_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d (3 replies)

This is the exact centre Iโ€™m talking about. It is bonkers on hot days, but I do enjoy walking right in to the cool gym while looking at the poor sods sweating it out lining up for the pool.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d (2 replies)

Ha!!! Wonder how many times we've been there at the same time.

Bless the cold council gym though. So comfortable.

tone212_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d (1 reply)

Iโ€™m sure our paths have crossed without realising haha. You probably thought whoโ€™s this moron.

The climate system in that gym is amazing. It is always a comfortable temperate.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d

I think everyone is a moron!!!!

Ohhโ€ฆ little stinker! I was fretting about all the crying and thinking the worst but likely itโ€™s Melbcat demanding more pieces of the beef from the broth. She insists on having it now.

Before that it was probably frustration that I wasnโ€™t understanding and lifting her onto the chair, and notification that sheโ€™d done a poo.

Iโ€™ve spoiled the cat

SpinMeAround@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d

She has got you worked out!!

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d

Aww she deserves the spoiling, and many beef!

It's a positive, she thinks your cooking is delicious. ๐Ÿ˜Š

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 236d (2 replies)

::: spoiler I'm eating leftovers for dessert

Apricot sorbet, made with eggwhite leftover from custard and the leftover sugar syrup my apricots were cooked in. Worked really well and very creamy. :::

Catfish@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d

Oh the horror of leftovers!

Presumably you shall recover in half a meme

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 236d

Looks amazing ๐Ÿ˜

SpinMeAround@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 236d

Aaaaand the warehouse team has hit hot grumpy point. Doesn't help hearing that my partner's work has shut for the day and sent everyone home early. And that the two men in the warehouse with me ate super spicy noodles on a hot day. I went out earlier and stocked up the fridge with zooper doopers, hydralite icy poles and other goodies on the company dime.

At least I can retreat to my office and enjoy the aircon (there is also aircon in the warehouse office, I'm not fully abandoning them).

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 237d

Plants are watered & cooling is on. Pray to the electricity gods no power outages and to the appliance gods no aircon breakdowns. Hopefully you are all staying cool at work or home or elsewhere.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 237d

Ted informs me it's breakfast time.

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 236d (6 replies)

I am physically fine (apartment A/C is holding up and I am free to work here all week and not in a fire area) but I'm really jumpy today. I dunno if its just because I am back at work too soon or if I have just lived through too many general disasters + my general climate anxiety. I keep thinking I'm missing something and wanting to check here and the other place and vic emergency. Maybe its just the lack of natural light from closed blinds. Going to put some ambient music on and try to focus....

Eagle@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d (2 replies)

I don't cope without natural light. Try one blind open and see if that helps.

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 236d

Windows are west facing so not keen on that but did just go stand outside for a bit. I might set a timer for breaks

thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 236d

Obviously not practical for today, but consider non-blockout blinds or old-school sheer curtains? Their whiteness helps reflect some light/heat, but still let some sunlight in.

Weโ€™ve got 2 west-facing windows in our bedroom. We have one fully blocked out, and the other using just curtains and partially lowered to allow light in, without overwhelming the AC.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 236d (2 replies)

Weirdly birdsong kinda helps. This or brown noise/ocean sounds are also not bad.

There are blue light machines intended to mimic a summer sky but maybe you could get the same effect from a bright blue screen?

A hammock or a beanbag can also provide a calming even pressure. I havenโ€™t tried a weighted blanket but might if thereโ€™s a cheap one.

::: spoiler I completely get the climate change anxiety too. Weโ€™re now kinda in the find out stage of fucking around, and the first climate refugees are starting to arrive in Australia. Plus I do not handle heat well at the best of times :::

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d (1 reply)

Thanks - I have lovely reddish lights but am regretting that now. Have upped the computer screen brightness. I also have a great app called myNoise that does awesome selection of nature and coloured / ambient noise. I will check out your suggestions. Hope you and melbcat are faring ok.

::: spoiler climate I work with environmental stuffs and yeah, I've not been ok about it for a long time. I grew up with floods and cyclones and that was always exciting when i was young but now ...ooof. Hard to deal with the grief in summer, that's all. :::

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 236d

::: spoiler Climate Natural disasters terrify me. :::

Thankfully I have cooling now so weโ€™re managing ok thanks! Melbcat is mad I wonโ€™t let her outside but she doesnโ€™t know how good she has it

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 236d

Hope everyone is keeping cool as much as humanly possible.

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 236d

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 236d

Fortunately it was not as hot as I feared. It is also an advantage of having a van with a panel directly behind the front seats, there is not a lot of space that needs to be cooled down so it doesn't take too long.

Op shop finds today were some shorts for the kids, a really nice hardcover collection of the Odyssey and the Illiad, and a bunch of movies somewhat acceptable for the kids.

The internet has broken my brain so much I look through these DVDs and my thought is, "wow, all these movies would make for great recurring bits in a Tony Zaret video" instead of something normal.

Look up Tony Zaret on YouTube if you're not familiar. I think a lot of people here might like his type of humour

God dammit. hubs took mattress topper to laundromat and blasted it in the dryer. Bits of the underside have fused. Now trying to remember what fabrics i can use to patch - and the most aggravating thing is, the bloody thing wasn't even washed properly
