Here I stand, at 50, wishing I could shit as well as my dogs.

I could probably eat better...

Edit: I do appreciate all the dietary advice.

So, story time. One of our dogs was having serious digestive issues, diarrhea, vomiting, just having a miserable time. Took him to the vet and the vet said that we should get some Science Diet food, the kind that you get from the refrigerated section in the grocery store. We said "fuck that" and just looked up what you should do to make your own dog food.

Usual recipe: 1 cup brown rice 1/4 cup barley 1 lb ground turkey (the following are all rough chopped) 2 large yams / sweet potatoes 2 zucchini 2 carrots Then we also tend to add extra stuff like kale and broccoli (they love both of these).

Super easy to make. Brown the turkey, throw in a couple cups of water, and all the ingredients, bring to a boil, simmer for a about 30 mins, stirring every 5-10 mins. Just make sure you didn't use too much water, it shouldn't be a soup.

Let it cool, and for us, it's about 10 days of food for 2 medium and 1 small dog.

And their poops are perfection, and don't even smell. It's ridiculous. When my wife was gone for a week, I just made extra "dog" food and just ate that with them (with salt and pepper) of course.

Doing some rough calculations, it's about 2x cheaper than the cheapest dry dog food. It just takes a very very small amount of work.

That's a very interesting recipe.

I do mostly meat recipe, everything goes through the grinder.

80/20 ground beef Chicken breast Chicken legs with bones Chicken feet Chicken liver, gizzards and heart Beef liver Salmon with skin on No salt added bone broth 3lbs blueberries

I try to keep to 80% muscle meat. 10% organ, 5% bone and 5% blueberry.

We adopted a senior obese dog heading to kidney failure and after a year on the raw food she reversed course and is now a very healthy old lady. I did try to cook and eat it once but the bone bits harden when cooked and it was very unpleasant.

Do they like it better than dry dog food?

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 209d

Very much so.

Probably a French toilet.

coaxil@lemmy.zip · 21 pts · 210d (11 replies)

Legit get some Metamucil/psyllium husks in you diet, it's so good

TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip · 25 pts · 210d (3 replies)

Fruits and vegetables get the job done as well. Your gut needs some fiber.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 209d (2 replies)

Just replace meat with some type of legume once, twice, or thrice a day.

Save your colon, and the planet.

Oh, and replace most of your carbs with whole grains.

Edit: and leave the skins on your potatoes!

iglou@programming.dev · 2 pts · 209d (1 reply)

When I went vegan I saw change in my shits within a week. Turns out animal products make shit shits!

And I don't even eat healthy. Just no animal products.

TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 209d

This is the way.

Slotos@feddit.nl · 10 pts · 210d (1 reply)

Beetroot salad. You will panic, though.

ickplant@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 209d

Every time I eat beets and asparagus, I forget about their effect and get horrified by the aftermath.

klymilark@herbicide.fallcounty.omg.lol · 6 pts · 210d

This, though if you start it start kinda slow. 1tbsp per day for a week, up it to 2, then 3. I tried starting at 3 and it had some wild symptoms (most people just get gassy/bloated though)

DashboTreeFrog@discuss.online · 5 pts · 210d

I just started psyllium husk about 3 weeks ago more for satiation, cholesterol and as a prebiotic but man, I don't think I've ever had better poops, stuff is insane

starlinguk@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 209d

Just eat properly and stop buying supplements.

iglou@programming.dev · 2 pts · 209d

While they work amazing, they're supposed to be temporary fixes (for instance, when medication affects your bowel movements). Your body, with the right nutrition, should not need anything extra to shit properly!

prex@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 210d

Nah. I you want to shit like a dog then eat like a dog.

Everyone’s boosting food with protein now, when every doctor on earth is screaming “eat some fucking grape nuts dawg.”

Fibers + Oils = The Shit

starlinguk@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 209d (1 reply)

Fibre plus plenty of liquids.

zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 209d

Well I was trying to skip the obvious. However, if you don’t know how to shit at that age, it might not be that obvious after all.

tiredofsametab@fedia.io · 12 pts · 210d (1 reply)

Hydrate better, eat better, and move more. I eat mostly brown rice as my main carb in my big meal and a big salad (mostly cabbage) as my other meal most days. I'm not far behind you in age and I want to poop less

VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 7 pts · 209d

That's me! Oatmeal in the mornings. Coffee.

Lots of fiber foods. Not for any reason but because that's just what I eat.

I poop nonstop. I'm pooping right now.

BlueEther@no.lastname.nz · 10 pts · 210d

dont try and do that standing, take a pointer or two from the dogs, squat.

__Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 209d (1 reply)

Try eating some dog food!

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 209d

Probably healthier than fast food

foggy@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 210d

Beans, prunes, raspberries, metamucil, water. Bananas.

Eat just that for 3 days. You'll poop your pants.

hakunawazo@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 210d

Amateur suggestion: dried plums, flaxseed, wheat bran, plenty of water, a few walks and the bowl is your friend again.

theywilleatthestars@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 210d

saute some broccoli in olive oil and garlic

can_you_change_your_username@fedia.io · 4 pts · 210d

I fixed both upper and lower GI problems by changing my diet to get at least forty grams of fiber a day. It's crazy how much difference it made. Lentils, edamame, other beans, steamed or sauteed veggies, whole grains. If you want convenience foods then keto or carb smart.

CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 210d (4 replies)

I put two scoops of the Costco fiber supplement in my coffee each morning and have great poops now.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 210d (3 replies)

That sounds like an extremely unpleasant cup of coffee. I also highly recommend a fiber supplement, but I just do an orange flavored one at night

CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 209d

The supplement dissolves completely and is odorless and tasteless. You'd never know it was in the coffee or even in a pure cup of water

I have had the "chunky" fiber supplement and found it disgusting as it is like pulp and I hate pulp.

billwashere@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 209d (1 reply)

Orange flavored coffee at night!?!

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 209d

With pulp

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 210d

All you gotta do is fill it, with more quinoa and millet. Then Robert's your Dad's brother! "Don't eat that batter" leads to more fecal matter!

Tikiporch@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 210d

Florastor for ten days, then a decent multi-strain probiotic with an apple, banana, or, uh....artichoke? every day. Just Google prebiotic foods and pick one every day.

Edit: if this doesn't work for you, just come back and I'll give you a full refund.

PunnyName@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 210d

Psyllium husk. And / or more beans.

sailormoon@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 209d

Meal prep!

Cut up veggies: onions, bell peppers, carrot shreds.

Cook up some protein of choice.

Now you can make salads, wraps, and stir fry throughout the week! Also can toss into ramen, which is not as healthy but hey… it has veggies and a protein now!

Also, find ways to fancy up oatmeal! Adding things like bananas, raisins, craisins, brown sugar, dash of salt, peanut butter, and spices can really make it good! I like old fashion style oats. I believe the instant oatmeal style isn’t actually very good for us, but check me on that.

Oh, and drink plenty of water!!

Tetrapegic and children I personally know use Macrogal based medicine.
