She does seem like the "I'm taking you down with me" type, doesn't she?

Gerblat@lemmy.world · 35 pts · 198d

Pretty much everyone in the GOP is that type. It’s basically a prerequisite to be that selfish

I mean… she’s not completely wrong, but she could have, you know, not have followed fascist orders too. All on them need to be held accountable

ClownStatue@piefed.social · 30 pts · 198d (2 replies)

Agreed. “I was just following orders” has pretty famously been eliminated as a credible defense.

azertyfun@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 198d (1 reply)

Except the Trials where that precedent was supposedly established actually allowed a great many people to escape conviction using that exact defense, then the prosecution subsequently gave up on the trials altogether. The Nuremberg trials were a travesty of justice, not because the Allies set up kangaroo courts, but because in an attempt to avoid such accusations and through unbelievable prosecutorial incompetence they let almost every Nazi who was still alive run free.

What I'm getting at is, don't expect justice to magically administer itself.

Quexotic@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 197d

Oh indeed! These people will not see justice.

Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 198d

Not so much not follow orders, but how about go for the job. You don't get a job like that without going after it and pulling strings. And you could resign at anytime.

verdantshimada@piefed.world · 93 pts · 198d (10 replies)

Y'all really don't understand that this headline is tailored for you.

In Noem's mind, this says "Kristi Noem Credits Her Actions to Trump and Stephen Miller."

She's running to the MAGA safehouse. This isn't "I was following orders." This is "I was given orders, and look at how perfectly I followed them!"

chaogomu@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 198d (3 replies)

Ah, but she just sinned against Trump. She said something that can be interpreted as blaming Trump. That's a big no no to a narcissist.

verdantshimada@piefed.world · 9 pts · 198d (2 replies)

You can only see it this way if you're on the receiving end of a left-oriented headline. Your perspective is fueled by clickbait. Trump's perspective is still mafia mentality.

Trump's already publicly defended her on Fox News, and I can't tell if a throwaway quote on Axios or Trump standing in a Golden Corral or whatever the fuck it is, giving an interview about how she's "done it all" happened first - it's a matter of hours. Point is, she is loyal AF and she is his last line of defense on everything DHS does. He needs her now more than ever and she's survived much worse several times over already. She's the shield he uses for everything - and he's positioning himself that way for a long-term benefit to him. Bovnio was always disposable because he's not in the money club. Noem is, and she's young enough to have a career after all this if our timeline gets worse. Even if she gets impeached.

Trump can't play Noem out until it's worth it to him, and it's no where near that yet. Bovino was the cost already, and no one liked him on the right anyway. Plus he flew too close to the sun, and THAT was the sin to a narcissist, to think he could play at the same level. His job was as a shield for Noem, full stop. Homan is next up until he installs the next public-facing nazi cosplayer and goes to Maine to also be the fodder for the next round. Trump hates LEOs and the military until he needs them, and so they're the disposable ones to him.

hesh@quokk.au · 4 pts · 198d

I get what you mean, but just now Trump is distancing himself from the negative perception of the ICE murders, so it might be a bad time for her to point the ownership at him.

jj4211@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 197d

Except Stephen Miller explicitly said they were doing it wrong and they were looking into why things were being done incorrectly...

It seems like they are spinning into it is being done wrong but it's their fault, maybe up to and including Noem....

xorollo@leminal.space · 14 pts · 198d (2 replies)

I agree with you, this is her intent. But Trump and Steven will throw her under the bus to give the people a culprit and then keep doing everything they've been doing. This is why they sent Bovino home and replaced him with Homan.

verdantshimada@piefed.world · 6 pts · 198d (1 reply)

Never. Or....not never, but not until it's really worth it. Noem absorbs flak for Trump, Bovino absorbed it for Noem. Homan is just Senior Manager playing Middle Manager until they get some new idiot in there to do the job and absorb flak for both of them.

Homan knows enough to stay in DC and out of the way of televised action. He's been an appointee for 22 years. He's not stupid, he's not a MAGA appointee chud, and he's not naive. He knows the politics of his job and knows that as an Obama-era appointee, even if he looks like he slipped up, he's out with that mark on his record to blame. He might be loyal, but he can never live down that original sin and so he goes on TV to slur his way through a Meet the Press interview and defend Trump to extend his worth one more week at a time.

xorollo@leminal.space · 2 pts · 198d

Agreed -- they do seem to have a higher bar in 2.0 for the level of absurdity they can get away with without tossing acolytes under the bus.

Interesting about Homan, I haven't been following for that long. Didn't realize his history.

And I guess the real point is that this article is meaningless because even if she does go away, it doesn't matter. They're still going to keep doing what they are doing. We haven't won yet.

MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 198d (2 replies)

“I was given orders, and look at how perfectly I followed them!”

You can't run to MAGA if you blame Trump for anything, they won't accept it.

Johnmannesca@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 198d

It's extremely inconsequential for all of them to just blame the person that's least likely to face justice for any crimes, so it seems even that was a calculated fold, even if it folded like a cheap suit.

verdantshimada@piefed.world · 1 pts · 197d

There's that word again. "Blame" is a word that includes judgement imposed on you by the medium. Judgement is 100% absent from how Trump will get the information, and he absolutely does not care about what someone else says about someone else because he's a narcissist. They will gladly all say "Oh, I dunno...ask the other person..." until the news cycle ends and this whole Iran invasion happens.

FFS, if Kash Patel is still in with these people, and Noem is displaying solid gold loyalty, this will blow over in a day or two. Really. Set a reminder on your phone for a week from now, or two weeks, and either give me a solid " I told you so" or not.

Well that's the wonderful thing about being a cult leader. You're the only one who can solve the problem. So you get whatever you want, you get all the credit when things go well, and when everything goes wrong... you become everyone's scapegoat. It's not a valid excuse, but it is human psychology.

PeeWee Himmler is a student of Nazi Germany, and expected that Americans would fold up like Germans still recovering from WW1. He thought that murdering a few people in the streets would intimidate the entire country into staying in their houses. He doesn't understand that Americans grow up hearing fables of Revolutionaries whooping the most powerful army in the world.

Americans don't get intimidated, they get angrier, and eventually they get ferocious.

Tbh a big portion is that we have nearly live coverage from a million different angles. Without that the newspapers would have said he was a domestic terrorist and we would have had no further information.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 197d

Valid.

It's hard to convince us when we have footage from every angle, which is the reason for all these "auditors" with cameras, and also the reason that ICE Apes consider cameras almost as dangerous as guns.

Minnesota is complaining that they can't prosecute the killers without the evidence that DHS stole, but it seems to me that all the evidence they require is the many videos of each incident. Just play those for the jury, and they'll convict.

In five-and-a-half years, Landsberg Prison was the place of execution of 252 condemned war criminals, all of them by hanging.[4] Executions were carried out expeditiously. In May 1946, 28 former SS guards from Dachau were hanged within a four-day period.[5] Bodies that were not claimed were buried in unmarked graves in the cemetery next to the Spöttingen chapel.
