I spent the night for a stupid reason at a police station and people know it without knowing the reason behind it, what would be the most honorable way to get around this unfortunate episode?
What would be the less shameful reason why you would have to be detained overnight?
Just fucking own it and do better. Downplaying it means not only do people still think badly of you, but now they know you also don't take responsibility for your own actions and instead lie about them.
You also don't have to be specific about what happened, only that you are actively improving yourself and what steps you are taking to do so.
Edit: You are taking steps to actively improve yourself, right?
Agreed. If it really is for a stupid reason like OP said, then this feels like a simple "I was an idiot, got caught, and ended up having a rude (but necessary) awakening. Thankfully that's all it was, and now I know not to do it again. It's time for some changes."
Least shameful would probably be drunk tank. Anyone who drinks has overdone it at some point, some people were just unlucky and happened to be noticed by an officer
Yeah, pretty much this. I'd seriously go for @RamRabbit@lemmy.world's advice, but if you must lie about it, just say that you got a bit too wasted, couldn't find a ride, and a cop found you before a friend did. One night in the drunk tank isn't a big deal
Some dude was hitting a girl so you hit him and got pulled up for it. But also consider just taking the truth because people will more or less react the same way and you don't have to worry about them believing you or maintaining that lie.
Do you not have people in your life who understand that the police lock people up for bullshit all the time? Why would they assume you deserved it? You need less ignorant people in your life (don't we all)
Most honorable? Just tell them you made a stupid mistake. You don't need to share the details. Will they talk? Sure. But you don't need to share if you don't want to.
Least shameful? You were mistaken for someone else who made a stupid mistake and didn't have your ID on you. They let you go when they realized you weren't who they thought.

Not disputing, but would you be willing to elaborate?

The honorable thing to do would be tell the truth, which is also probably the most shameful.

How shameful is the truth of the matter, OP? Can you share it with us internet strangers? 👀

Less shameful than what? What's the real reason?
