Can't believe Portugal is nearly the same size as Portugal
wuffah@lemmy.world · 40 pts · 207d
They are completely different colors, however. 🤔

Our Portugal 🇵🇹
FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 207d
They would be the exact same size if Portugal didn't have that Lisboa sized gap by its western border
ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 207d
Holy shit, I don't think you can just go around saying "Lisboa sized gap," wtf.
FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 207d
My apologies
A lisboa shaped gap
fulcrummed@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 207d
There is no one accepted standard for a Lisboa. All Lisboas are beautiful in their own right.
WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 207d
A large Portugal the size of a small Portugal.
Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 207d
Portugal 🇵🇹 does get the morning light tho
robocall@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 207d
Umm doesn't it get the beautiful sunsets?
panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 84 pts · 207d
Can you put Portugal A little to the left so I can see Spain better?
GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone · 24 pts · 207d
If you line it up right, the borders are exactly the same shape! What a crazy coincidence!
echodot@feddit.uk · 8 pts · 206d
Get more evidence for continental drift.
cyan_mess@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 69 pts · 207d
If you think that's impressive, just look at the size of Spain compared to Spain
Cjwi@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 206d
Man, the mercator projection really messes up the perspective, I never would have guessed!!
smeenz@lemmy.nz · 15 pts · 206d
Wow, it covers Spain almost entirely
wabafee@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 206d
What are those rectangle territories on the top left?
robocall@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 206d
Those are just decoration
ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 3 pts · 206d
I'll assume you're joking but funnily enough, there is piece of Spain in France:
robocall@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 206d
That's so Spain to just leave an exclave in France

TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 206d
I don't get it. The joke is "haha it's actually not a misleading projection"... ?
owsei@programming.dev · 13 pts · 206d
Mercator's deformation show up when you move countries north/south. Since Portugal only moved slightly East the apparent size basically didn't change. (You can even see and compare real Portugal just left of the red projection)
TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 206d
Right. The reason I don't get the post is that I thought everyone would know and see this ^
I feel like this post is taking a picture of a cube, calling it a cube, then I'm supposed to doubt that it's a cube. Which I wouldn't...
faythofdragons@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 206d
That's right, it goes in the square hole
echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 206d
Well not exactly because it's still a misleading projection, because Spain is also incorrectly projected given how far north it is
TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 206d
I meant misleading in a relative sense. In any case, this post makes no sense to me.
Gork@sopuli.xyz · 31 pts · 207d
Wow I never realized how small it was in comparison until I saw it here.
robocall@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 207d
Spain is indeed small
assassinatedbyCIA@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 207d
The mercator projection really oversells the size of portugal. If you ordered a large pizza you’ll have to eat it outside of the country.
echodot@feddit.uk · 7 pts · 206d
So true, it fits on my phone screen. A large pizza definitely wouldn't fit.
sundray@lemmus.org · 20 pts · 207d

The size of two Portugals compared to most of France:

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 16 pts · 207d
What I would like to know is how big it is compared to Iberian Peninsula.
Tja@programming.dev · 15 pts · 207d
So thats why the Portuguese description on products is always smaller than the Spanish one!
Jamón ^presunto^
paequ2@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 206d
TIL: jamón en portugués es «presunto»
I would have read it as: jamón, presunto? supuesto? tal vez? quién sabe.
Tja@programming.dev · 2 pts · 206d
Presuntamente jamón, pero igual es papel reciclado.

do NOT steal Portugal!!
FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 207d
This is surprising to a lot of people because everyone is used to seeing mercator projection maps, which skew the true size of countries
Deme@sopuli.xyz · 13 pts · 207d
Huh, I wonder how it compares to that other country to the west there.

Why isn't Spain just eating Portugal?
Agent641@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 207d
Why does Russia, the largest of the countries, not simply eat the rest?
Jesus_666@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 207d
I mean, they're trying. Not very successfully as of late but they are.
fulcrummed@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 207d

They're so far apart it's almost the cartographical equivalent of licking your elbows.
